in my office we run Win2K and Exchange 2K to handle 10 employees. For 14 users, Exchange is worthwhile, especially since you already have a network setup and WIN2K.

Can see the MAC address, but can't get a connection

are you using other USB devices ?? I would hesitate to stick another USB device in something that seems to have apparently killed 2 of them already. Have you tested these 2 USB adaptors on other PCs to see if they were working properly ?? what OS are you running ?

Wireless Woes!!

just plug the wireless AP into the switch, that will enable wireless users onto the network. You don't need to get a combo solution, unless you really want it.

you have a static public IP ???? I doubt that the university would be giving out public IPs like that. Doesn't matter what you do, IPs can be traced back to a PC whether they are dynamic or not. With a router it just provides a little more protection from someone trying to break into your PC.

I need to learn ...how can I tell how much traffic is on a network?

I would start with buying a new switch. Swap it out and see if it makes a difference. If not, then return the switch. That's pretty easy. If that doesn't work, then start on the Win2K machine. Might want to also check on the NIC in that box too.

Superscan4 is good. I like freeware. I also downloaded and tried LANview 1.5 from JXDev. They both are pretty good in the few minutes that I've played with them, but Superscan is free and LANView only has a 15 day trial. Superscan also generates a pretty html page with all IP addresses...
