Asus A7M266 and Athlon XP 1900+

What kind of os are you running? If it's xp, then there's a setting that is trying to get too much out of the ram...set all the ram settings to default. That was my experience with a blinking curser.

Athlon 750 T-Bird without Fan? Opinions needed fast!

I'd have to say that it's too risky...just keep the fan on. I had a nasty experience with a cpu without enough cooling protection, so I'm not going to make that mistake again.

Question regarding Standby and CPU cooling?

From what I have heard, putting the computer in standby shuts down the hard drives and just puts very little power through the cpu. That would probobly explain why it was cooler in standby than just idling...and I don't know of any special cooling device that is activated when your comptuer...

When do i need dual processor ?

If you have the money, I'd definatly go for the dual processor because you'll certainly see a boost in performance. Video editing probobly requires a lot of processing strength, so I'd get the dual processor. But, then again, if you only plan to use it for normal everyday activities, you'd...

Connect Case Fan to Motherboard Header or Power Supply

I'd connect most fans to the PSU...in fact, I'd only connect the CPU fan to the motherboard. I think its best to have all fans running at a constant speed, unless you buy a special device like the DigitalDoc 5, which just uses a bunch of temperature sensors to shut down the fans you want at...

Whats the "best" cooling case out right now?

I bought a great case from newegg.com...its the Maxtop "Cool Case" and it comes with two 92mm fans built in...they're not that bad, either. Click here for a link to a couple of these cases. I think they're out, but they also sell this case without a power supply in case you wanted to put one in...

disturbing cpu temps

Part of the problem may be the heatsink...an AMD 1900 gets pretty hot, and it probobly needs a better fan on the heatsink...the 6cu only runs at 4550±10% rpm...the 6cu+ gets up to 7000±10% rpm. But I think the main problem is probobly in the main setup of your case...I can't imagine that the...

Something broke, but what!?

How much difference does Arctic Silver make?

I would use ArcticSilver only because its a brand name...I'd rather trust the brand name for something like the processor...better to spend the extra couple of dollars than to be sorry in the long run.

Temp monitoring software

Now that I think about it, I did have that problem...it only happened when I had it read in degrees F, but when I switched it to Celsius, it worked fine...try switching it to read in Celsius if you haven't already.

are these temps ok?

I can't imagine what would be 144C, but I'm pretty sure the processor is the 45C reading, which is just fine, and the motherboard is the 23C reading...those two are great readings, nothing to be worried about. The 144C reading is probobly just showing up because you don't have a thermal sensor...

Help! I think i just screwed up my PC!!

I'll be honest...I haven't heard of a processor coming up with the heatsink, but I'd have to imagine that if your computer still works and if the temps stay in that range, you'll be fine.

Well, those temps look ok...anything below 60C is pretty much fine, but I would have reapplied the thermal paste. But if the temperatures stay in the 40C range, then I think there's nothing to worry about.

Which type of case do you prefer, ful or mid tower?

I like the mid towers because they make me have to think about what I'm spending money on...see, I had this full tower, and I went and spent all this money on nifty gadgets to put in it (and I don't really regret it!), but with my latest machine, I decided on a mid tower, which helped my decide...

Are these temps ok?!?

Those temps are fine...in fact, they're great! I have an Athlon 2000+, and it runs at 100% all the time (cancer computing thing) and it gets up to about 42 C at the max...the slightly unsafe zone is about 60 C, but I've even heard of some running at 70 C without many problems. As for the video...

AIM and Linksys Router Problems

I was getting a similar problem, only with Windows netmeeting as well...although I can't remember how I fixed it exactly, I think I forwarded the ports 1720-1721 to my ip address on my LAN...let me know if that works.

I was in a similar situation when I overclocked a cpu. It wouldn't boot, and I got some odd beep codes which seemed to be pointing to the processor and the motherboard...in the end, it turned out that both were cooked. It sounds to me like it's your processor...but just to be sure that it...

Help- pentium 4 2.4ghz- RDRAM or DDR?

I tried Norton Ghost 2002 because I was in a similar situation where I had to switch hard drives and it worked great for me. Thanks for making me aware of the ghosting programs...they sure do save a lot of time.

Refurb Epox 8k7a <oops, not 8kha!> or New ECS k7s5a?

I have researched the Epox and, although I decided on a Soltek, the Epox is a very good motherboard. For overclocking, I would definatly get the Epox...I have heard a lot of good success stories about it.

Which DDR memory should I get? (For overclocking..., is OCZ stuff any good?)

I recommend Mushkin DDR PC2700...I've been using a stick of 512MB for about 2 months while overclocking and I haven't had any problems.

I recommend spending the money on the PC2700...I've been using PC2700 in my machine while overclocking for about 3 months now and I haven't had a problem, so I say go for it.

I think it's best to just spend the money on a great plextor drive and be done with it...I spend a lot of time with off-brand cdrw's, and I spend a lot of wasted hours until I went out and bought the new Plextor 40x12x40. Spending the extra money seems better then spending the extra time to me.

Upgrade from Win98SE to what ?

If you can copy your important files or back them up on another computer, then I would just format your hard drive and do a clean install of some version of XP...home edition is a lot less expensive, but I would suggest pro if you do a lot of networking...if you don't need the thick manual on...

Need to reapply thermal paste?

If I were you, I'd reapply the thermal paste...better to spend the couple dollars on the new paste than the couple hundred dollars on a new processor. But if it doesn't seem like a big deal, I don't think anything will happen...I just think that it's better to be safe then sorry.

Do new BIOS's sometimes improve the performance and overclocking abilities of a board?

I myself have gotton a processor up to 140 FSB and fried it in the process, so 137 is not too low a number for a FSB. A new bios really won't help you in overclocking, but some motherboards do come with a bios that have built-in overclocking programs...I have heard great things about RedStorm...

If a cpu is dead

Some bios have beep codes that can tell you if your motherboard or processor are having trouble...if you don't have any beep codes, its probobly the processor, but if you do get beep codes and you don't know what they mean, check out bioscentral.com...you can learn more about the beep codes for...
