I'm a re-install junkie. I know how my computers are supposed to perform and the second things go wrong I reinstall.
I just switch back to Windows 2000 from XP because of all the problems I had with XP and now that I reinstalled 2000 it runs like a champ again. (also product activation sucks)...
Try removing one of the sticks of memory and trying to reinstall the OS. If that doesn't work, try the other memory stick by itself.
This is all assuming that you are not trying to OC.
Call Sony if it is still under warranty. Try an external monitor and see if it occurs on that monitor also. If not, you could remove the bezel holding in the LCD panel and try reseating all the connections.
WARNING: Do NOT try and reseat LCD cables if the system is still under warranty!
With Windows XP, it loads up tons of other files on bootup and they aren't under startup tab in msconfig, these files are under the system tab in msconfig and eat a considerable amount of resources and increase loading times. I suggest to weed through these files and delete whatever you feel is...
I would suggest to possibly try another type of cd-r (TDK, Memorex, etc) , then try removing your cd-rw software (Roxio, NERO) and reinstalling it, if the issue persists I would contact the manufacturer of the drive as it is most likely a bad drive.
I agree, you're not solid unless you can run Prime95 for at LEAST a couple hours. You could run a ton of other benchmarks and be stable, then run Prime95 and it could still fail within 5 minutes.
I agree that it is a bit of a pain, but the piece of mind it gives me that it's not going to fall off hauling the case around and that fact that it performs very well make it worth the extra pain it takes to remove and install.
I going to have to completely disagree with both of the last 2 posts.
Icecool83 hit the nail on the head. In Windows XP the difference between 256MB and 512MB of RAM is mind blowing.
