There's the difference - if you're not a monopoly you're free to make the price as low as you want - even free. If you have monopoly status, you cannot sell below cost.

FTC sues Intel

Let's not forget that checking CPUID for non-Intel processors wasn't always 100% successful. If I recall correctly, AMD actually produced some Thunderbird processors that reported having SSE capability, when they did not. An attempt to run SSE code on those processors would cause a system crash...

Probably not nearly as long as you think. But thanks to Amdahl's law, 8 to 12 cores may be an upper limit on what's useful for homogeneous cores. Instead of, or more likely in addition to, that 8 core CPU we'll probably be seeing heterogeneous CPU designs, with far more than 8 "cores". Just...

To be honest, Intel does almost the same thing - except that Intel will state "up to" X% improvement, where X% is the best improvement you see in any test. I guess you can't blame a company for advertising what they do best - as long as it's not an outright lie. Anyone who's watched this game...
