Do I need a fan on my chipset?

My Asus A7V266-E came with a small heatsink and fan on the northbridge. After a rather spectacular HS failure, the motherboard was replaced with A7V266-E rev2.0. It came with the same HS on the northbridge as the A7V333. It is also the same HS that is on almost every Asus board. Fans aren't...

What do you think: Will SCSI ever replace IDE on mainstream systems?

To spin something faster you a better motor. A motor which adds to productions costs. And a faster motor will create much more heat. Kinetic Energy = mass * velocity ^2 Therefore all other things being equal, a 15000 RPM SCSI drive is consuming over 4 times the power of a 7200 RPM IDE drive...

Vantec stealth + case + Power supply

Look to Pabst, Panaflo, and NMB for the quietest fans. I have three Stealth fans in my case, and they are not as quiet as they claim. I'm just keeping them for their RPM monitoring though. And I'll second the Antec TruePower. These are very quiet units. Compared to my old generic PSU, it is...

Yet another fan placement question; in regard to the heatsink though

I would not really worry about what you consider to be a problem though. If your temps are fine leave well enough alone I say. I meant the plate as a physical separation mounted midway between the HSF unit and the intake of your PSU. This would separate the airflow "sharing" between those two...

    Looking for QUIET Socket-A HSF

The AX-7 is a great HS. Just make be careful when mounting it. It can come very close to the capacitors around the socket on some motherboards. I use an AX-7 paired with a Panaflo High. At full load (during the winter) right now with the fan on full speed it keeps things at a nice 48 degrees...

How to undervolt the CPU and case fans?

The 7V trick is a tried and true method of quieting your case fans. You could also hook both fans in parallel to a 5V line. But 5V might not be enough to get the fans turning, resulting in the fan motors burning out. Test if the fans will start at 5V. If it doesn't then quickly disconnect...

    Electrical - splicing rpm wire

RPM wires only work when the fan is connected to ground. This is why the 7V trick messes them up. Take a multimeter to your rheobus, and check that the ground wire is always ground. It should be on a rheobus since they use a variable resistor. If your rheobus uses PWM (pulse width...

Yet another fan placement question; in regard to the heatsink though

Depending on the size of your case, a well placed plate would effectively shield the HSF from the airflow of your PSU. This would only be a good idea on a larger (full tower) case with good airflow. barring that, idea #4 seems to be your best bet. I'd be rather reluctant to remove the fan...

    Thermalright SK-7 question please

Well since the SK-7 doesn't use the mounting holes why are you worried about them? If the heatsink was heavy enough to snap off the socket lugs, you can be assured that a company with Thermalright's reputation would never have brought the product to market. That being said, I would definately...

    Lian Li Durability?

Well if "transporting it" means tossing it in the back of a pickup, and racing up and down the most potholed switchback roads you can find at high speed, then I doubt any case will suit you. If you mean transporting it like a sane person, then the Lian Li will hold up just fine. The Lian Li's...

    how to differentiate thermalright slk800,700,600,sk6,sk7..?

There are small differences in the construction. The SLK-800 having the greatest number of fins for instance.. The SK7 has bent portions of the fins at their tipes that keep them from bending too much. I think its different on the SLK-800 Take a look here to see some of the differences in...

    I wanna buy, but where

Bigfoot Computers is also a pretty decent store. They have the Alpa in stock right now. Its a smaller selection of stuff than NCIX but Bigfoot is more of a modding gear store. So they have a bit larger selection of fans and stuff.

How to re-texturize the case panel?

Not sure I completely understand what you mean. If you are refering to the bottom side of the screw head having a textured finish to grip the case. It isn't necessary for it to dig into the paint to secure the case panels. Of course you can repaint around the holes if you'd like. Most case...

HOW DOES ONE MOUNT A PANAFLO L1A AT REAR OF CASE?

A 10-24 machine screw will also work. But doesn't make for a very clean appearance. However as a cheap temporary measure they work great. I usually can find a few kicking around in my basement whenever I run out of the self tapping case fan screws mentioned above.

What is your impressions of the new Antec Sonata

Hmm... Don't quite know how I feel about the sideways 3.5 bays. Will make for a much nicer looking interior with all the wires stuffed to the backside. I am a bit concerned about cooling for the HD through. With the panels they screw into in the way, there might not be a lot of airflow over...

    Why nickel plated ramsinks?

Because nickel plating is thinner than chroming, reducing the impact of its reduced thermal conductivity. If they were made of plain copper they won't totally corrode and go green. But it will become noticeably duller in appearance. And why have dull looking copper sinks when you can have...

Rubber spray on the inside of a case?*UPDATE*

Well if you are refering to the "Adhesive-back Damping Sheets" on page 3240 of their catalog (second product from the bottom) then I really don't know how you can compare it to paxmate. The product in the link is made out of asphalt or thermoplastic. I don't see anything refering to a product...

Rubber spray on the inside of a case?*UPDATE*

Really, cause they call it "acoustic absorption mat" in the site you linked to. And another excerpt from that page "The more you cover with pax.mate the more the sound absorption." They also claim that it "Stops case vibrations". I have a hard time believing that since its made out of "soft...

Rubber spray on the inside of a case?*UPDATE*

If you can identify the source of the vibration placing a felt tab there would probably take care of your problem. Pax-mate and Dynamat are designed to absorb sound, the aren't neccesarily designed to stop one piece of metal from vibrating against another. However their sheer weight compared...

    Cable Wraps and Silicone Lining

Grommets are the only thing that will appreciably cut down on vibration. A simple washer fails to eliminate the contact between the device and the case through the mounting screws. Grommets isolate the mounting screws from the case, while securing the device at the same time. Cutting sheets...

    92mm fan on a slk-800

it probably works the same as placing a 80mm fan on the SK-6. Put the fan on at a 45 degree angle. It requires a bit of force to the the fan clips over the corners of the larger fan, but it whould work. I've also heard of people placing a 92mm fan on the SK-6. You shouldn't' have much of a...

recommend me a hs/f combo for athlon 1ghz

The Gc68 isn't great for OCing NEW CPUs because of its all aluminum construction. It will more than handle your Athlon 1GHz. But probably won't cut it when trying to heavily OC a high end Athlon XP (eg 2400+ and higher). Especially with the physically smaller cores of the ThoroughBreds.

Whats a good quite mobo chipset cooler?

I really like those last two as well. You could use them as a starting point for some internal colour co-ordination as well. Unless you are really pushing FSB overclocking you will be fine with one of these passive heatsinks. I have the stock passive heatsink on my A7V-266E and the FSB will...

Wanted quiet P/S to replace Aopen FSP300-60GT 300 W supply. EDIT: Doh! My Aopen already had a temp-controlled fan.

Swapping the PSU fans is a tried an true way of quieting your PSU. It also voids your warranty. Its up to you. If you feel don't have good protection or clean power from your household circuitry, you'd be best off getting a new PSU.

    Case fans

Ideally, yes you would want to bring in fresh air closest to the CPU, but all the other compnents in your computer create heat too. And you need to get the hot air away from the CPU. Putting an intake at the rear does not effectively accomplish this. (okay it would if you put a Vantec Tornado...

    Quick question...

The IDE specs only allow for 18 inch cables... you won't get very far outside of your case. This is why they don't make external IDE enclosures. You will only find external IDE enclosures that connect via USB/Firewire/SCSI. Edit: What about adding the additional hard drives into 5.25 inch...

USB 1.1 vs 2.0 front access

They should work at USB 2.0. Worst case is that they'll work at USB 1.1, but they will work. I only use my front connectors for things like joysticks/game pads, so I wouldn't notice a difference anyways. Confused: As for a wire's capability to handle the bandwidth difference, good luck...

is hard drive size effect the power supply?????

It will also use more power if there are more platters inside. This is unlikely if you are comparing 120GB and 80GB drives. They both should be using two platters. But comparing a 40GB and 120GB drive both at 7200 RPM from the same company's product line, the 120GB will use more power...

    I need a SMALL case w/ 120mm fan holes

A 120mm fan on the the rear for an exhaust is going to take up quite a bit of room. Which is contrary to the designs of most small cases.
