Strategy for Measuring L1/L2 Cache Size

I'm just curious how to measure the size of L1 and L2 cache with simple benchmarks (something that I can do in C would be best).

Recovery Data from a Protected NTFS Folder in a corrupt Windows install

I have a hard drive that has Windows XP installed but cannot boot at all. I only need some files in the C:\documents and settings\user\desktop. I installed Windows on a second hard drive but that Windows will not let me access the folder I need (says access denied). Also, I tried to do a repair...

Rare(?) Problem with Power Supply and Motherboard

The Power Supply is about 1 year old, and the motherboard is about 6 months old. It seems that the pin on the ATX connector of the motherboard is quite secure. Do you think it would help if I "tin" the atx connector with a thin layer of solder?

    IS7 + Enlight 420W Power Supply = Problem with 3.3V Rail?

The pinout of the 20-pin connector indicates that the burnt pin was the 3.3v. (The bottom left pin, if you look at the IS7 horizontally with the ATX connector closest to you.) I can't RMA because the northbridge of the board fell off some time ago and I fixed a new northbridge heatsink on it...

    IS7 + Enlight 420W Power Supply = Problem with 3.3V Rail?

'm currently using an Abit IS7 motherboard with an Enlight 420W power supply. Recently, the 3.3V rail dropped significantly to ~3.10-3.20 (was 3.30-3.35 a couple of months ago) and I noticed that the 3.3V pin on the ATX connector of both the power supply and the motherboard seems to be burnt...

    Abit IS7 doesn't like Corsair TwinX PC3200LL?

Yeah, I just don't understand why the motherboard won't do high FSB with the Corsair TwinX. I mean the ram can do 200mhz (at FSB250, ratio 5:4), but it can't do 181 (at FSB272, ratio 3:2). I have tried single stick of Kingston ValueRam and single stick of OCZ PC3500, both sticks had no...

I tried up to 2.65. Do I really need to up the vdim that high? edit: 2.8 still doesn't work, when I go 260+ fsb with the corsair, the computer refuses to post. It just gives a long beep. (I tried 3:2 and 5:4. Tried lowering memory timings, GAT settings, everything :() I'm concerned that the...

    Abit IS7 doesn't like Corsair TwinX PC3200LL?

I have a 2.4C and an Abit IS7 board. With an OCZ PC3500 basic edition ram, I can do FSB 272, with memory ratio of 3:2. So the memory is at 181 mhz. However, with a single or double stick of Corsair TwinX 3200LL ram, I cannot run at that setting, even though the memory speed is still well below...

Well, I don't want to raise the voltage with the stock intel heatsink. So 2.9 ghz at default vcore (1.46-1.49 actual) is not abnormal? Is it realistic to expect 3.2+ghz with better cooling and slightly raised vcore?

Arctic Silver 3 or Arctic Silver Ceramique

From my experience, Ceramique's advantages (vs ASIII): 1) slightly easier to apply (its thicker). 2) pure electrical insulator (in case you accidentally get some of it on the mobo or something). 3) very cheap in 22 gram tube. 4) performance maybe a tab better. All in all, buy Ceramique if you...

    2.4B vs 2.4C on a BH7

If you have no plans of upgrading the mobo, then it'd be wiser to get the 2.4B since you would be able to overclock it. The BH7 can handle FSB of 200, but not much higher.

best bang for your buck: Water cooling kit, or buy parts?

What case are you using? If you cannot use 120mm fan/radiators, then consider adding another black ice micro (which is the exact same as the swiftech radiator) to your system.

I can't really recommend the Swiftech Kit because of the radiator (it is only uses 80mm fans).

Tt 420w Power supply is good?

Hrm, if the Tt 420W can't handle what you are running, then Enermax 350W will also be inadequate. With 350W of total output, you'd only have 100W left for video card (radeon 9700 pro uses 54 watts), ram (roughly 10w per 128mb), and motherboard (~20w).

Tt 420w Power supply is good?

Go with the 420W Tt. I use an Enlight 420W (exactly same as Thermaltake 420W and HighPower 420W, they are all originally manufactured by HighPower), and they work very well. The Enermax 350W is rated at 26A on the 12V rail, but you wont realistically come close to that because the total O/P...

8mb buffer hard drives, WD vs. Maxtor

I have a Maxtor 80GB (8mb) and a Western Digital 100GB (2mb version). I prefer my Maxtor because 1) SpeedFan and Dtemp can read temperature from the Maxtor, 2) Can choose between maximum performance/minimal acoustical output/balanced modes. If my WD drive had those two features, then I...

A friend of mine wants to hold on to his A7V8X, but upgrade his CPU. Is the A7V8X a decent motherboard for overclocking a JIUHB? Is the multiplier unlocked by default- no need to connect the bridges? How high can the FSB go on the A7V8X? Any input is appreciated.

Will 3/8-inch tubing fit over 1/2-inch barbs?

Right now, all of my water cooled components use 1/2-inch barbs and 1/2-inch tubing. I'm thinking of switching to 3/8-inch tubing and have a few questions about it: 1. Will 3/8-inch tubing fit? 2. Is 3/8-tubing generally more flexible than the ClearFlex 1/2-inch that I'm using? (the reason why...
