    Where to start troubleshooting

Funny thing. I unplugged all the internal power cords that were not needed and made sure all the others were tight. Still didn't work. So I unplugged all the external connections and moved the computer near the other one planning on using the PS of the other computer. I decided to test it...

    Where to start troubleshooting

I have had this computer 2.5 years. Haven't opened that case in 8 months. I shut it off and two hours later it wouldn't boot. I have an MSI motherboard (K7T266Pro2-RU) with a Athlon XP 1700+. The MB has a D-bracket indicating 4 red lights. Meaning it is haulting on the CPU check. MSI sent...

MS Access - Create default field name from other field names

I was wondering if there was any way of created a field name or field name default from a combination of the values in 4 other fields. Basically I have 90,000 devices on 11 wafers that are mostly unique. I would like to build an access database to keep track of the information. The only...

    Yep, another traffic ticket thread.....

I guess it depends on where you live. Like I said here they don't pull you over for less than 10 and that when they are in a bad mood. I know a lot of cops that think it is a waste to pull someone over for less than 17. But then again here if you are not going 10-15 over on a 3 lane street...

    Yep, another traffic ticket thread.....

13 that's it? You could probably argue that where I live. Cops don't even pull you over unless you are going over 10 and the photo radars are set to 11 over. Not the legal note. Since it is a civil case and not a crimal case it probably is legal, but will vary from state to state. The best...

RIAA is at it again, 261 more lawsuits

I personally think nothing holds with the RIAA argument anyway. They say sales are down 31% in the last 3 years. They are lucky then! There are a lot of industrys that sales droped more than 31% in the last 3 years. There also hasn't been a lot of good music coming out either, especially for...

    Dual Display Video-in problem

I have a MSI GF4-Ti4200 VTD8x. I am using a dual display and the S-video in. It seems that the input video can only be displayed on the windows primary monitor. When I try to drag the window to the secondary monitor it either gets corrupted or displays an error message "Due to the limitations...

    Video Flashes when scrolling

I have used there web service, but haven't gotten an e-mail back yet. I figure since they make both the video card and motherboard they would have an answer, but you never know. I just don't want to wait to long because I don't know how long Newegg will let me return the video card or...

    100% CPU usage???

I had the same problem with a customers computer. It was the HP office jet driver. I uninstalled the driver for fax etc, and only installed the print driver and it worked fine. That if you have one of those. If not drivers are listed under system so look into that.

Upgrade gone to hell w/AMD... Help!

I haven't really heard any good things about ECS, athough I don't hear really bad things about them either. I do know that I would blame Fry's. Everything I have every bought from them seems to not work. Do you ever look at the return line when you walk in. There's always a line of 8-10...

    Video Flashes when scrolling

Yes, I did uninstall the drivers first. I have a question. How much of a loss will I actually get from turning off the AGP8X and running it on 4x? It is a Geforce 4 Ti-4200 with 128MB of memory. I can't really see it ever needing to use the system memory.

    Video Flashes when scrolling

I've tried the bios, it didn't work. I have also tried Directx9, newest video drivers from MSI (4172), newest NF2 drivers from MSI, there is no video bios. I'm running out of ideas. I am am trying to find my USB to PS/2 adaptor to change the mouse port and see if that fixes anything.

    Video Flashes when scrolling

No, I'm only using the USB mouse. The keyboard is PS/2. I'll try updating the bios. I am only one version behind and it didn't really say anything in the update that sounded like it would fix the problem. There are no conflicts in the device manager. Thanks. I have also tried different...

    Video Flashes when scrolling

I am building a new system for a friend. I bought an MSI K7N2 and a MSI TI-42008X model vtd8x. When I use the scroll on the USB mouse the video goes in and out. It mainly happens if I do it quickly. It only happens when I am in a program that can scroll. It won't happen if there is no...

What really happens to a cpu that locks up...?

Yes I said that wrong. I meant more of it is the software the freezes, but the CPU orginally causes the problem. Not the CPU that freezes.

    Transfer speeds of hard drives

One more thing is that both HD's are on the same bus. This means they are sharing the same 100Mb line. So in theory each drive only gets 50Mbs. Then you have to account for latency and errors, this probably reduces them down to 30Mbs even if they are new fast drives. Plus I don't think each...

What really happens to a cpu that locks up...?

Usually I would say it is a software problem more than anything. When you OC the chip one of transistors may not have time to switch, or many more things, so it sends a 1 out instead of a 0. This screws up the program, and the program doens't know what to do. Then it goes to what...

Why do longer pipelines allow higher clock speeds?

About the longer pipeline allowing for more MHz lets try this. Lets say you have to run 20 instructions in the pipeline taking 20 clock cycles. 10 of these instructions take half the time to run than the other ten. But since each instruction is allowed 1 clock cycle the system all runs at the...

    cable modem problemo

Can you ping 192.168.100.1? If I remember right you should be able to ping it. I am guessing that since you have a USB connection that you are the only computer hooked up to the cable modem? If not it could be an internal IP conflict. Other than that I would say it's time to buy a new modem...

    Why is this happening?

What operating system? XP reboots when there is a blue screen error. This can be shut off to trouble shoot problems. Of course it should still recognize the C drive. If it was just the reboot I would say it was a driver problem.

PLEASE HELP!! Question concerning Athlon XPs

You are going to have to go to someone that knows what they are talking about. I think the .13's go down to 1800+ now. If you go to Newegg they have them listed. Sometimes they actually say .13 and .18, and sometimes they say Palomino which is .18, and then Thoroughbred which is .13. I am...

Moore's Law is in its own bubble...

The only company that I have every heard quote Moore's law is Intel. Whenever Intel releases a new processor they always have a little spot on the news comparing it to Moore's law. When they came and talked to my graduating EE class, sure enough the slide with Moore's law came up with all...

Why do semiconductors and metals exhibit opposite resistivity when heated?

You have a good point there. I learned about stuff like this in my BSEE. I think it was already stated that when it is highly doped it reacts differently than an intrinsic semiconductor. Since the intrinsic is actually a insulator the resistance is high, then as it is heated the created...

    Hammer's integrated memory controller

Paralell vs Serial memory, which will conquer the mainstream in the comming years?

Well I think there are two ways to look at this. Parallel could actually be faster if it is designed right, but this is extreamly difficult. Serial is easier to work with since you can use a smaller bus, but to get the same bandwidth you need to pump up the clock, which again creates problems...

    CPU'S

I wouldn't say that AMD is less stable than Intel. If you go all Intel, CPU, motherboard, etc then yes it would be. The stability of the system mainly comes from the motherboard and chipset. An AMD CPU on an ASUS motherboard with a VIA chipset is just as stable as an Intel CPU on an ASUS...

AMD paper launches are moronic (XP 2800)

I wouldn't say that. SOI is a really good thing for processors to go to. It reduces a LOT of problems with current technologies. I am using it right now to create a device, but it's still young. They haven't been able to make the wafers low cost with any real output. After the wafer is...

AMD paper launches are moronic (XP 2800)

The problem might be all the $$ they are spending on getting Hammer out. The fact that SOI isn't really a high-yield technology is probably a big problem. I am guessing they were trying to use Barton on SOI and couldn't get squat for yields, so had to stop and redesign for a non-SOI version...

win98 fans - its time for test

That a good question. Is the DHCP server a domain controller? If it is are you setup to log into a domain or a workgroup? Maybe you should try deleting the "Client for Microsoft Windows Network" and "TCP/IP" item from the network menu and add them again. Maybe one of them is corrupt, or...

win98 fans - its time for test

I have had this problem before on my machine. Can't remember how I fixed it though. All I remember is changing from DHCP to manual a couple times. It might have to do with the mask too, but the DHCP server should take care of that. Plus you have to make sure the workgroup is correct on all...

An odd effect I'd like explained

I have a similar problem with Win98SE when I run out of memory. But if I close all system tray apps it goes away. How much memory do you have? I wonder if it has something to do with Windows not using the swap file wisely. I know that I am out of RAM, but the HD led doesn't come one. I...

    problem with cpu or mobo?

It could very well be the power supply too, but taking it down to a min it will usually work. For modern PC's you need AT LEAST a 300w power supply, and sometimes that's not enough. Plus you need a good brand if you only run 300w, because the lower quality ones probably won't run right.
