    Wireless inline volume control?

I have a 2.1 speaker set that I really like (Logitech z623), and I'd like to connect it to a TV that only has a fixed-level audio output. Is there a such thing as a standalone wireless volume control to attach between my TV and speakers (for maybe $20 or less)? For inputs, I can work with 3.5...

Ubuntu 12.04 good for older Acer laptop?

My favorite method on old hardware is to install Ubuntu 11.10 Server first with only the default packages. (SSH is ok if you intend to use it.) Then "apt-get install lubuntu-desktop" will get you on your way.

P2V on same box? (Win8 Home)

With Black Friday approaching, I'm looking to add a box at home with 16GB RAM, and instead of dual-booting, I'd like to virtualize multiple operating systems and run them simultaneously. I have 2-3 questions. First, how would licensing work if I intend to move Windows 8 Home from the bare...

Ubuntu 12.04 good for older Acer laptop?

Lubuntu is nice, and supposedly 256MB is doable, but I doubt it would be enjoyable for you. I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 kicking around with 256MB, and I ended up just keeping it for console work. (Project Gutenberg is pretty cool if you use Lynx.)

Bookmark that Follows You for Android?

In the "real world", there's a bookmark that follows your progress and automatically updates what page you're on: http://www.geekosity.org/2012/02/bookmark-albatross/ A similar technology exists with Nook and Kindle devices or applications; they keep track of where you left off. Is there...

Help: NET USE always fails 1st time; 2nd try always works

That's a better work-around than what I had in mind, and I might consider limiting it to a certain number of attempts before dying completely. I'd still like to know the root cause, though.

Installing Win7 - Use recommended settings or Install important updates only?

Our browser/ActiveX/Java VPN solution was broken with one of the recent "recommended" updates, and we found IE9 was breaking certain websites (like Fifth Third and Yahoo). If you're supporting a lot of workstations with limited IT resources, I'd definitely stick with "important only".

Help: NET USE always fails 1st time; 2nd try always works

I have a Windows batch file that I wrote to automate interconnectivity between two database systems. (It massages the data along the way and uses various tools to get the job done.) Near the beginning of the script, I call a NET USE command to establish a connection to a network share where...

Fake SSD with USB sticks (home box)

Has anyone had any luck running a website database on USB flash drives? I know, I know. We have hundreds of thousands of dollars of infrastructure at work, and I wouldn't mess with this foolishness there, but this is for a hobby web server I'm developing / playing with at home, and most of...

List of cars with most horsepower?

Is horsepower your only goal? I've found that there is a LOT more to the driving experience than horsepower. My dream daily driver would be a Factory Five GTM.... about $30k-$40k completed.

why doesn't the US change standard work week to 30 hours?

I don't think we'd see a 25% cut in productivity. Being clear-headed and well-rested would increase the efficiency of the workday. There are definitely diminishing returns for the extra hours, especially in a "job" that's not the "career" love of your life. Further still, I'll bet having more...

why doesn't the US change standard work week to 30 hours?

That's unfortunately very true. I've been busting my ass to make up for the incompetence and laziness of <edited>, and my job title coming into the company had nothing to do with such work. <edited>

why doesn't the US change standard work week to 30 hours?

Our 40-hour workweek was invented to give everyone a job. Wrenching the nut down a little further would help us is our current economic situation. I think salary exemptions for overtime should be tweaked for professional non-executive employees of medium-to-large companies.

why doesn't the US change standard work week to 30 hours?

I live in a bullshit area of the country without public transit to speak of, and I spend about 12.5 hours a week commuting. It's mind-numbing, and it's really getting to me. Maintaining my car with 100 daily miles sucks too. People who say they have plenty of free time either don't care about...

Son wants to be a computer programmer

My programming upbringing evolved through GWBASIC, QBASIC, DOS batch files, QuickBasic, VB (1,3,5,6), Borland Turbo C++, and VBA. (In the last few years I've also gotten into VBS, PHP, Oracle PL/SQL procedures, MySQL procedures, and Java.) I learned the hard way that while BASIC is a great...

    Imperfect Short-Circuit Evaluation

Short-circuit evaluation in Java is imperfect. The code below breaks if I remove the method declarations or if I change the left-to-right order of the conditionals. public class pears { public static void main(String[] args) { if (!(0==1 && unicorn()==pixiedust())) {...

    Interesting VBA technique

I've read online in several different forums that people (usually n00bs) want to make stand-alone applications with VBA. While I haven't come up with that necessarily, I do have a technique to offer that will work if you do have an appropriate version of Office installed. It's very simple...

That 10 MB/s is device-limited. USB 2.0 can do 60MB/s. That's 30MB/s even if you allow 50% overhead. While my PC2700 RAM can do 2700 MB/s, that's with fully synchronous data acquisition, not random-access, and that's also assuming that there's enough of it left to use. When it swaps out to the...
