I agree, I wouldn't be that scared of them either. They're currently reliable and can be registered in any state except CA. Even if the fix ruins MPG or is invasive in some way, it's a used car. Just reflash it. Or if a lease is an option, there's screaming deals on Passats for current owners...

Thermostat question

Thermostats are designed to fail open, not closed. Sounds like yours is stuck open. That's a problem and it should be replaced, but you might have something else wrong. A stuck open thermostat would be too much cooling, not overheating.

Is the Galaxy Pro 8.4 the best current Android deal?

Have you tried just resetting the thing to factory defaults? I've got the same tablet and non of those issue, so I doubt it's exactly a driver issue. Likely a bad config somewhere, but you'll be chasing it for hours, so it's easier to reset.

Do you guys do most of your reading on a smartphone?

It "works", but I'd certainly never do it as a primary reading device. No matter how large the screen is, it'll still be easier to read on a device without an LCD screen. Kindles are so cheap now-a-days, that why not just throw an e-reader in your bag for real reading?
