How can you tell if it's a hardware modem or a software by looking?

Look for a coil and standard IC's. If you see a chipset or a DSP, it's almost always software. DC

Are Those Warm White Spiral Bulbs Worth It?

Only if he's going to use things like Renderman and 3d modeling do you need a higher end video card. P4's seems to do well on the 3DStudio Max / Maya end of the spectrum. Athlons rock for 2D Wire modeling in ACAD. Video card will dictate redraw, so you'll want a early Quadro (GF2) or better. RAM...

Is there any USB 2.0 pcmcia card that don't use the power adapter?

Belkin, Mercury, and USBGear are all optional...some devices draw more power than the card or system bus can supply, and only in those instances would you need it. USB Scanners (which seem to draw the most power on hubs) worked on all three brands with Sony VAIO's, HP's, and Toshiba laptops...

Question: Promise Ultra 100 ATA Controller

In a lot of cases, a PCI IDE controller will give you marginal performance gains. It's not really worth it unless you're trying to bleed the system for everything it's worth and you score your system on single point increases. DC

Fastest possible on-the-fly burning?

On the fly works just fine at 40x and 48x for me. I use 16x and 32x media and have burned ISO's, HDD source, disc to disc master, and several other methods. All have worked fine. In fact, no that I think about it, I haven't had a coaster in months, go burn-proof! DC

Rounded Floppy Cables - Do ANY of them work?

Since the drives are pinned first and then the plastic cowle is installed later, I could easily belive it was keyed wrong. I've seen one floppy and one LS-1 keyed wrong. DC
