    Do the SVC fans suck?

Its not the best fan in the world, but its pretty decent for a buck and a half. I've used it on an SLK-800 since I built my system a year ago without any problems. Running a 2100+, 2GHz@1.7V it keeps the cpu at ~40C load for a 25C ambient.

    R350 vs R360?

There are some external indicators, though they're not as sure as taking the HS off, of course. Adrian's Rojak Pot has a guide to modding 9800Pros to 9800XTs, and he lists some of them.

    chipset fan

You might be able to revive it by putting a few drops of oil into the fan, but you'll probably be okay just leaving it as-is. To be safe though, might as well pick up a nice passive NB cooler like a Zalman (SVC has a pretty good selection). That won't ever fail, and might even work better if you...

how to lap right and question on thermo compound?

There are quite a few lapping guides; Googling or searching the forum archives will probably turn up as much info as you could possibly want on the subject. But in a nutshell, when you lap your heatsink the idea is to go progressively using finer and finer sandpaper. Start with something like...

    Erratic restarts

Nope.. not that I can tell. I think I'm just gonna write it off as a Windows problem for now, and if it persists after my reformat, well... I'll just come back and bug people for help again :P Thanks for your input everybody.

    Erratic restarts

Antec TruePower 430W, rails are pretty stable: +12V@12.16V, +5V@4.95, +3.3V@3.33 CPU temps are kept under control; for a 24C case, CPU generally runs around 38C/45C idle/load @ 1.7Vcore (2100+ 1733GHz @ ~2GHz) Also, in response to ScrapSilicon's suggestions, my autoreboot is already off, but I...

    Erratic restarts

Seeking the sageness of the council here. This might be an OS thread, but I'm not sure; part of what I'm wondering. I'll move it if it is. Basically, I'm having a problem w/ my system in which Windows Explorer (WinXP Home) restarts spontaneously, but doesn't cause a full reboot or BSOD or...

My Experiences With Two VGA Coolers

Heheh, I'm heading the other direction.. after all the time spent wresting that Zalman on, I'm swapping it out for a Silencer this weekend. The Zalman's silent and spiffy-looking and all, but yeah, don't really like the heat it radiates into the case

My Experiences With Two VGA Coolers

No, although the main heat dissipation plates are kept far enough from the PCB (~5mm) so that you can add separate ramsinks.

    Mouse feet modification...

I didn't want to pony up the cash for a few little squares of Teflon either, so I went to McMaster-Carr and bought a roll of Teflon PTFE tape, 1/2" wide x 0.0045" thick; 5 yards for $5. The stuff is backed with a silicone adhesive, and sticks great to the feet of my MX500. Since its a tape, I...

How would you wire 120mm case fan for use OUTSIDE the case?

You could get a pair of 6V lantern batteries and attach fan connectors to them. Dunno if you'd get much more than a couple hours life out of them, though.

    Northbridge and PSU

Never had a northbridge overheat, so can't say specifically (hopefully somebody who's experienced it can weigh in) but anything overheating would probably cause instability. I would guess, though, since the NB handles the link between CPU and RAM, data transfer could get corrupted even if your...

    Northbridge and PSU

well, your rails are all within +/- 5%, which is the amount of swing that should be allowable, so it should be fine. If you suspect bad power, though, couldn't hurt to test with an actual multimeter just to be sure. If your northbridge is getting that hot, you may want to look into aftermarket...

    Viscious new worm Sasser..Patch now!

Tangentially, when I went to WindowsUpdate to get this patch, it didn't show in the list of critical updates. I d/l'ed it manually from the security bulletin, but now that I think about it, most of the recent security patches haven't shown up when I go to WindowsUpdate. I have the automatic...

    Best North Bridge cooler?

I'd imagine one of these scaled-down CPU coolers oughta do the trick if you wanna go all out: Thermalright Swiftech Otherwise, this passive Zalman should also do nicely.

Use Zalman FB123 on regular heatsink?!?!?

I attempted to do something like this once with my SLK-800 and a Enermax 120mm adjustable fan, plus a 120->80mm adapter to serve as a makeshift duct. It worked okay, but not as well as I'd hoped, so I didn't keep the setup. I had to keep the fan near full blast (~90cfm) for it to cool better...

AMD XP Mobile VS AMD XP Barton

You may get more responses if you posted this in GH. but as far as I'm aware, the mobile Bartons are just regular Bartons with their multipliers unlocked and have been picked to be able to run at the same rated speeds on lower voltages. Therefore: 1) clock for clock, they should perform exactly...

What is Data Cache and Instruction Cache on a CPU?

Well, one of the principles that cache operates on is that smaller is faster, which is why the L1 caches are so small. Even so, something as big as a 1MB cache is still much faster than going to RAM, which is why we're seeing the advents of L2 and L3 caches as transistor densities increase. But...

Intel adding 2 layers to .13 cpus?

I'd imagine that the transitors themselves can stay pretty stationary, but adding layers of any kind is pretty involved. First off, you'd probably want to redesign each of the existing metal layers to be able to fully take advantage of the new real estate that you're afforded, which means pretty...

Intel adding 2 layers to .13 cpus?

Multiple silicon layers would sure be pretty spiffy :D But that's still real exotic, though I'm sure things of the sort have been done in research. ATM additional layers is just for the metal interconnects, which allows for better interconnect wiring since you'd get additional planes to run your...

AGP 4x card in an AGP 2x slot, possible?

I was under the impression that unless the newer card was specified to be 1x/2x/4x compatible, it shouldn't be used in a 2x slot because of the the supply voltage dropping from 3.3V to 1.5V in the 4x standard. Or is that only a problem if you use a 1x/2x card in a 4x slot?

    Creative Soundblaster MP3+ USB

Hey all- I'm thinking about getting one of these USB sound cards for my sister, who uses a laptop. She listens to a lot of music, but is hardly an audiophile of any kind (used the laptop speakers for two years until she recently got a $20 set of Creative standalones), and does ZERO gaming...

Antec SX835II and A7N8X Deluxe - Pwr Fan Speed

Might just be your PSU fan is running slow enough that it's below the BIOS measurement threshold. Does it show up on AsusProbe? The PSU fan and chassis fan speed readouts might be switched in AsusProbe. For my Antec True430 on an A7N8X-Dlx, the PSU fan doesn't show up in BIOS, but reads...

Front USB won't detect certain devices?

It might also be a problem with quality of wiring/shielding. I also run into the same problem with a USB 2.0 key drive; it won't work with the front connectors on my Antec 1080AMG, but if I use the separate connector that came with my A7N8X-Dlx, it works just fine, and at USB2.0 speeds. So my...

Ducting Mod - Simple way to keep cool

Antec Sonata with a7n8x-deluxe- front panel connections?

On my AsusProbe, the power and chasis fan readouts are swapped. Do you have a case fan hooked to the 3-pin header on the mobo? If not, that could be why the power fan shows below range. Also, in running the Antec True430, I don't think I've ever seen the power fan go above ~1550 rpm; they may...

    Antec True430 Cable Length

dunno an exact figure, but I bought 20 feet of 1/8" sleeving and still had more than 6 feet left over after doing all the cables on an Antec 430 plus some other misc. wiring (fan connectors, etc). That said, ~15' should be plenty; ~10' might be a bit close.
