Not really, though, and for the sake of argument.... Task Manager will only report that, but any windows application can see all the physical memory. CPU-Z will report hard figures regardless of system/BIOS/application usage.

I still agree, this isn't normal behavior for windows + 4GB combinations. There is something worth tracking here. PAE shouldn't effect anything here, it's a switch/trick to allow more than 4GB on a 32bit system. I would check to see if your board supports 2GB sticks, as well as if your...

Knoppix it too, see what it detects for system RAM. Jough's advice is sound, get more info to help explain the problem. You are running XP Pro right? bob is right too, getting it to detect 4GB of RAM (regardless what is practical/usable) is possible in 32bit XP. Switching to 64bit...

while I appreciate the idea, $20+shipping is hefty for a connector I can mod up myself. Perhaps if you had something else like USB on it, I'd be more inclined...actually...SATA + Molex would do it for me....

Agreed, I'd bet you'd have it in the boot order, or you have the onboard NIC set to PXE mode. Check all the other cables you want, it's bitching about the network ;)

Well, I've never seen one, but there isn't any reason why there couldn't be a PCIe to PCI bridge. Regardless of the possibilities, rbV5 is right, you're taking the wrong approach. As far as what mobo to get, I'll let others field that Q

First off, wrong forum, but I'll humor... Yes, perfectly possible. It's done in windows with Internet Connection Sharing. If your router uses NAT though, you can just pick up a switch and connect both computers directly into the switch, which uplinks to the router.

Performance on Pentium M 733 (ULV 1.1GHz)?

I'm looking at some some ultraportables/tablets. I'm curious if the latest ULV Pentium M from Intel really does fall above the 1.5GHz Banias chip in performance, as the market rating implies. Anyone have opinions or reviews I can reference?

Hard Drives showing up as removable

that's my point, and Windows 2k/XP/03 are supposed to have protection from that. With hardware RAID masking the drive configuration, it wouldn't matter. I'm curious if Windows can see beyond some RAID chips and allow a software interface to shutdown part of the array.

What DVI cable should I get?

The quality of cables makes a difference for error correction. For most people, this does not matter, but for longer runs or runs with large sources of interference, high quality/shielded cables are good. Error correction on most of these chipsets is intended for single bit correction...

I'm guessing it is just a marketing move. They look good for addressing the problem, and gamble on the amount that will actually get returned , factoring in the number of end users that will know enough to complain. EDIT: Either way, good for them.

Agreed, use this one. Like others said, it involves you looking for yourself, the color patterns just help. If you have dirt on your glasses or on your eyeball, results might vary ;)

I'm confused on which distro to use.

Best linux sales pitch ever... My advice is Fedora for easiest to use, but if you want to learn linux, get the hardest, most uncooperative distro you can, because you'll learn enough in an hour with another PC and google than you will running any wizard interfaces from the major distros

Minimum cable length for Cat5

Well I'm not thinking well enough at 8am, but I can point out that if it is 2.5 meters, that distance is likely to be the entire non-repeated run. Meaning a 3 foot patch cable running from your PC to the wall doesn't matter, as long as the combined distance to the next device is long enough.

how reliable are SD cards?

This is the problem people run into when they think stable media is a good excuse to not create backups. My personal take, is that SD, CF, and any other solid/strong form factor are very reliable, but it could be etched in stone and I'd still make a damn backup...

That is all well and good, but you can't expect to simple change port numbers and solve this. ISPs want to solve this, they can easily stop any SMTP traffic regardless of port, and I wouldn't be surprised if some already did. VPNs and SSH servers aren't a huge headache, especially if you...

Yes, in fact, its exactly what the internet was created for :) I'm sure you'll get plenty of FAQ links from someone, but here's the quick and dirty. Each computer will have a unique address that you can find out and use to talk directly to each other. Most multiplayer games today though...

Ideas for solving SMTP problem at work

Why don't you setup a VPN at work, and have the mobile users connect into that. Then they can always use the same mail servers no matter where they are or who their ISP is. This is by far the quickest solution that allows for the other factors to change at will. If VPN is a pain for you, SSH...

Preparing a HD for dual-boot - anything special I need to do?

Not sure if SuSE 9.1 has a fix, but many of the 2.6 distro's had issues with dual booting because of the hard drive geometry. how to solve, make sure your bios has your HD in LBA mode.
