Game of Thrones Beer: Take the Black Stout

Ommegang is really good. This is going to be a solid craft beer, that just happens to be tied in with Game of Thrones.

    Looking at yachts... land yachts!

I have a Lincoln Town Car (1997), and you can't find a car that's more like a yacht. I want something that is: -Under $20k -- super cheap on the used market. 20k would get you almost new with lots of options. -Decent highway MPG (mid 20s+) -- I get 26 or so in mine on the interstate...

    Groupon customer service is awesome

Groupon is fine for customers, but I've heard stories about businesses getting talked into setting up really shitty (for them) Groupon deals and losing tons of money.

    Robots replacing Surgeons

200 years might be a bit long, but he is right: we are nowhere close to autonomous surgeries. The Davinci robot is amazing (I got to drive one last summer at a conference), but they aren't even trying to give it sensing or autonomy at the moment, because the technology is not there yet.

Best place to buy a new alternator?

I have an autozone alternator in my car. It's a rebuilt unit, but carries a lifetime warranty. It's not been great -- the first one only lasted about a year -- but the lifetime warranty transferred to the replacement. On my car I can swap the alternator in 5-10 minutes, so I don't really mind...

    nao robot!

The primary market is research labs at universities, not hobbiests. Robots are expensive. I don't even want to know what a PR-2 costs, and people (robotics labs, anyway) are lining up to get them.

    White Water Rafting Trip

I did the Gauley River in West Virginia, and it was a pretty wild ride. Lots of class V rapids, but even though it's got crazy water it's safe enough for novices to run (with a guide steering the boat, anyway). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauley_River#Whitewater_paddling

    Hair clippers

I have Wahl clippers that I bought at Target about 5 years ago (~20 dollars, I think). I use them to cut my hair and trim my beard, and they're still going strong.

    Softball Bat

Generally they just say the bat must be ASA approved -- most softball bats you can buy will be. Never hurts to double check before you get a nice bat first, though.

I have a piece of SKYNET...

I'm working on a Ph.D. in robotics. I'm working on a robot named Skynet, and we store it in an abandoned nuclear reactor. Skynet also has a ton of lasers -- I think 80 individual lasers. The best part is that 100% of that is true.

    Chernobyl Diaries

The area was definitely evacuated and abandoned, but the plant itself was operated until 2000, and although all the reactors are now shut down, plenty of people still work there. Pripyat is abandoned, but the plant is not. They're also replacing the containment structure they threw up over...

What should I do next? Finishing a PhD in engineering

In engineering, a minority of people go on to be professors, which is a very different thing than teacher. I suspect very few people go on to have teaching careers. Most people go work in industry.

What should I do next? Finishing a PhD in engineering

In what industry? There are some fields in which a BS won't give you the necessary background (robotics, advanced controls, estimation & tracking, &c.).

    College TAs

Graduate research in the sciences is mostly funded from sources outside the university (NSF, DOD, private, whatever). Engineering departments can support themselves with grant money. I'm an engineering Ph.D. student, and currently I'm supported through an NSF grant my advisor has. In the...

    I love grilling season

The best part about grilling in the winter is you can just throw a few beers around the grill. When you finish what you're drinking, a little bit of digging is all that stands between you and a fresh, ice-cold replacement. It is a little strange how a beer straight out of the fridge can taste...

    Nissan's LeMans racer

The chassis was original designed to become the standard chassis for INDY cars, but Lola won the contract with a more traditional design (no surprise). I guess Nissan liked it enough that they funded continued development. It looks pretty cool, but I'm not sure about it being competitive. I...

    PCI riser cards

You could in theory do your processing offboard but you would need a very good wireless link between the car and your computing resources. You see stuff like this when people run intensive navigation or mapping algorithms on little robots like a quadrotor -- they'll follow the robot with a...

    PCI riser cards

The risers aren't coming out (the rack itself is mounted on vibration isolators), we're just losing the ability to talk to the cards plugged into them. Re-seating the cards/risers fixes the problem, so I suspect the issue has to do with the riser (I had an HTPC box years ago that used an AGP...

    PCI riser cards

I work with an autonomous vehicle research group. Our robot is a Chevrolet Tahoe with (among other things) a rack containing 16 1u computers in the back. Several of these have various DAQ cards and other devices installed, and these machines have been points-of-failure for the robot. Either...

    Anyone from St Louis?

It's pretty sweet. They have one of only a few surviving examples of the largest locomotive ever built (the UP big boy). It's absurdly huge. They also have one of those crazy snowplow/blower things they use to clear 20 foot drifts of snow off tracks. Also, I came in here to say "CITY...

    mini v12

No spark plugs, and the camshafts are geared 1:1 to the crank shaft. That plus no smoke out of it makes me think he's feeding it compressed air. The only thing I'm not sure about is that it looks like he has some kind of distribution system on the front of it that you wouldn't need on an air...

How to talk my 17 year old son out of buying a camaro

He'll be disappointed every single time he gets into the Honda if you make him go that route. Besides, I'd be surprised if a 1994 Camaro is that much faster than a more modern Civic.

    f(a + b) = f(a) + f(b)

There are no wrong answers up there. They all mean more or less the same thing (at least as far as an engineer cares about it). A mathematician might understand more about the differences than I do, but really you could say additive, superposition, or distributive and most people would...
