According to sun, their UltraSparc III has a failure rate of about one in 83,000 due to electromigration degredation of the chip. So it DOES happen, even in non-overclocked chips (now, this probably speaks a bit more of Sun's.....although they're "high-quality", I honestly haven't heard any...

Good DC related thread...

The thing to realize is that although the HLT command "pauses" the CPU -- it also causes voltage spikes, (if anyone here is an audiophile, they may hve noticed this.... sometimes it actually interfeares with sound quality). I guess the question, as one of the posters said, is which is worse...

IPC of different CPU's

Perhaps something worth emphasizing (that Sohcan did, albiet it is buried in his post), is that the IPC of a given processor will vary according to frequency -- all else being equal. The "IPC" of an Athlon XP at 1.5ghz will likely not be the same as an Athlon XP at 2.00ghz for most...

Has RC5 been optimized for the P4 yet?

ViRGE -- that's not radical, or new. That algorithm has been around for QUITE some time (recall bitslicing with DES? That's possible on x86 machines). And it's not that the P4 lacks the shift operations. They just have high latencies, which restricts throughput.
