5-9-06: 21 Yr old Hacker Gets Almost 5 Years In Prison - infected 400,000 PCs with adware including Military machines

"It's our choice, we're the ones paying for our classes. If we pass or fail, it's up to us." That's great and all to say, but is a valid argument ONLY if heavy non-academic use by a person affected only themselves. It doesn't. The other students and professors -- some who may actually be...

    Amd Dual Core and DC

Traditional SMP (two sockets, for a total of two cores), on AMD based systems do not share ram -- you'll need seperate ram for each CPU. "Dual Core" (often called CMP in academic literature) is (right now) just like a regular "one socket" solution -- that is, two cores in one socket you only...

Edited title: Should we have a "general discussion" thread?

lol, I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. It's been awhile since I've been here. Nef threads used to comprise "nef1" "nef2!" "neffffffffffffff!" and litterally nothing "social". Guess I (wrongly) assumed nef threads didn't include any social stuff. I admit I didn't read the last one :-P...

    Needed: Seti@home classic linux client

Last I heard (whoa, years ago), was that it's faster to run the win32 client under linux using wine than it is to run the native linux client (and that its actually faster than the win32 client under windows!). Is this still true? I have been running s@h classic 3.03 win32 with wine for the...

    Mass DC recruiting.

He has in the past. The problem with respect to benchmarking is that they are generally well-optimized programs that generally fit inside caches and scale linearly with clock speed. For example, I could extrapolate with very high accuracy how many keys/second a 5ghz Athlon 64, or a 3.5ghz...

Best way to take advantage of Hyper Threading in UD?

I've never tried this out, but if someone else feels like trying, I think it's worth a shot. Someone said that the client won't let you run two copies of it at the same time. Is this true even if it's in seperate directories, as someone suggested? If so, I wonder if it would be possible for a...

Via C3s are crap @ SETI!!

Of course it sucks -- depending upon the version of the C3, it's FP unit, although (partialy) pipelined, is clocked at 1/2 the frequency of the rest of the core. That and it decodes exactly 1 x86 instruction per cycle, as compared to up to 3 on the Athlon family (and although the P4 only is...

    Good DC related thread...

According to sun, their UltraSparc III has a failure rate of about one in 83,000 due to electromigration degredation of the chip. So it DOES happen, even in non-overclocked chips (now, this probably speaks a bit more of Sun's.....although they're "high-quality", I honestly haven't heard any...

    Good DC related thread...

The thing to realize is that although the HLT command "pauses" the CPU -- it also causes voltage spikes, (if anyone here is an audiophile, they may hve noticed this.... sometimes it actually interfeares with sound quality). I guess the question, as one of the posters said, is which is worse...

I miss my Cyrix's too. The PR 300 (233mhz Cyrix II) finally died...it lived a good 5-year life (somewhat overclocked for part of it, and the last two years with a heatsink half the size it actually required....although it was underclocked). The guys have it right.....I'm in college :o. I'm...

    $39.99 K6-2+ 450 or $59.99 K6-3 450 ?

/me waves again Okay, just to double check: $40 USD for a 450Mhz K6-2+, or $60 USD for a 450Mhz K6-III, right? Given that....go with the K6-2+, if your board will support it. At like frequencies (and their correct voltages), the K6-2+ consumes just over half the amount of power..... (~16...

what is the high tech difference in the amd vs intel cores?

Hola Rand. Yeah, my articles at SLcentral tend not to be of quite the same technical depth as some others, but I might also point out that I've never once been paid :o Actually, I'd say that two of my articles were as good as, if not better than (in some respects) some of the ones at Aces and...

    Which is faster ? K6-2 550 or K6-3 450 ?

The other guys seem to have hit the highpoints. A recap: without on-die L2 cache, increasing the processor frequency doesn't do much, because of the disparity between bandwidth required by the CPU, and bandwidth afforded by whatever L2 is available. Now, a common misconception: It's not the...

    IPC of different CPU's

Perhaps something worth emphasizing (that Sohcan did, albiet it is buried in his post), is that the IPC of a given processor will vary according to frequency -- all else being equal. The "IPC" of an Athlon XP at 1.5ghz will likely not be the same as an Athlon XP at 2.00ghz for most...

Has RC5 been optimized for the P4 yet?

ViRGE -- that's not radical, or new. That algorithm has been around for QUITE some time (recall bitslicing with DES? That's possible on x86 machines). And it's not that the P4 lacks the shift operations. They just have high latencies, which restricts throughput.
