Linux timekeeping in a virtualized machine

Actually for Linux guests that is not recommended (although we use it for our Windows guests). According to VMware: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservi...yKC&externalId=1006427 "Note: In all cases use NTP instead of VMware Tools periodic time synchronization. Also, you may need to open the...

Linux timekeeping in a virtualized machine

We are running SLES 10 SP2 with kernel 2.6.16.60-0.33 in a VMware environment. We are having some issues with NTP, and VMware recommends using kernel 2.6.22 as it supports "tickelss timekeeping" We can not update our kernel at this time (Quality Control etc) and I was wondering if anyone...

Ah ok so this is something I have to do on the workstations. I was sure hoping I could do it with Group Policy since these machines are all over the place. Thanks for the info though.

Configure domain accounts to be local administrators

I'm a network admin but we are not a Microsoft shop (eDirectory). We have a stand alone network for internet access which we run ISA server on. Users log in to Active Directory on a Windows 2003 Server which runs ISA as well. We don't really care about this network as far as what people do...

    Upgrade questions

I guess I have to explain the paging better - the world is huge and as you run around it has to load textures for all of the new areas you are moving to. It's not paging the hard drive because it is using the swap file. Sorry for that.

It might be barely OK, but with any hardware accelerated video card it will no problem. Never hurts to try though.

    Pioneer DVD burner...good?

I had that burner running in my HTPC and it worked great. Recently replaced it with an LG HD-DVD/Blu-Ray DVDRW drive but until then I liked it a lot. Was always quiet during movies. I replaced an NEC 3540 that quit working and the Pioneer was much quieter.

    Vista MPEG-2 Decoder

OK so I have read a bit about CCCP, and it might do the trick. Does it work well with Media Center from anyone's experience? I see that it bundles in ffdshow which is something I have been thinking of trying out anyway.

    Vista MPEG-2 Decoder

So I recently upgraded my HTPC and decided to give Vista a try. After finding out my 7600GT would not do hardware acceleration of video I updated it to an HD3850. I'm still not very impressed with the picture quality either in movies or recorded TV. Both of these are MPEG-2 encoding and I...

Looking for new Video card for HTPC

BassBomb - the whole problem is that nVidia did not enable hardware acceleration of video in the Vista drivers for the 7x00 series. error8 - thanks for the info I went with the 3850, it was a bit more than I wanted to spend but if it does full hardware decode of 1080p it will be worth it.

Looking for new Video card for HTPC

I had my motherboard die in my XP MCE 2005 machine, so I figured I would take the opportunity to upgrade to Vista Media Center. Unfortunately I have found my video quality of live and recorded SDTV has taken a huge hit, and my CPU is being taxed just watching SDTV. After a lot of digging...

THinking of getting a ZALMAN CNPS9500

I have it and find it very loud. It is easily the loudest thing in my system, even with Speedfan turning the fan speed down. If I play games it just screams. It DOES cool well though but I would likely get a heat tower if I was buying today.

    corsair 520hx and antec 182

You know I own one of these so I should have checked that out - but it is tucked away in my home theatre rack... You are correct of course. Usually fan only means temp adjustable but apparently not in this case.

    corsair 520hx and antec 182

Fan Only plugs are PSU controlled voltage plugs to slow down fan speeds when the case is not too hot. It uses the temp sensor in the PSU just like the PSU fan to adjust the fan speeds. You would not want to hook up a hard drive or anything to these because it could damage the internals with...

Dilemma - RAID vs. Graphics card, + Quad or Dual?

He is not talking about decoding - he is talking about HDCP Encryption. Your system will decode just fine with the 8800, but more of the decoding will be sent to the CPU rather than the GPU like the 8600 series. From the link you posted you can see even an E4300 can decode with an 8800. If...

Dilemma - RAID vs. Graphics card, + Quad or Dual?

First question - yes you should get the 640MB 8800GTS. It has the extra memory for high resolution gaming, and I think it would be a good investment. Second - I think Quad Core is overkill. Most apps are still NOT even multithreaded, at least for gaming. Some are and quad helps, but you...

Do Molex -> Sata power converters exsist?

They also have no way to supply the 3.3V line that is included in a SATA power cable. I'm not sure if any drives out there care about that yet but perhaps someone has run into this problem before.

Advice on a NICE Office Scanner

By FAR the best scanners I have ever installed are Fujitsu. They scan at an extraordinary speed, and I have never seen one break. We use the 5120 and 5220 models which are USB and SCSI (with the 5220 including a flat bed and the 5120 being just the ADF). I was just on their website and...

NEC 3550a suddenly can't read DVDs?

I had a 3550 in my media center to play DVD movies and it started to have a really hard time reading disks. I just purchased a Pioneer drive and I love it, mostly because of how quiet it is compared to the NEC. My 3540 in my main computer is still working great though.

    What happened to AMD's All-In-Wonder?

The remote doesn't control the TV tuner, it controls the software that comes with it. It doesn't matter what does the output in this case. If it is in another room then you need the ATI TV tuner because it comes with an RF remote while the MSI and Saphire brand ATI tuners come with a poor IR...

    What happened to AMD's All-In-Wonder?

I agree I am not sure why you would want the TV output from the tuner card. Modern video cards actually have really really good TV output, especially with AVIVO and PureVideo hardware acceleration.

    What happened to AMD's All-In-Wonder?

Yes I was surprised no one knew this too. ATI has discontinued the AIW series completely. They now have the Theater 550 and 650 stand alone tuners which have picture quality that blows away the AIW series. Buy a stand alone tuner, and then you never have to upgrade it when you get a new...

I can hear my hard drives

I have an old Maxtor 20GB 7200 drive and the thing is a screamer. Those drives were from before the days of fluid dynamic bearings so the old ball bearings or whatever they use start to whine a lot. I'd ditch the 20GB drive if it offends your ears.

    IDE to USB adapters

Some of them power the laptop drives via the USB connection, however some of them require an external power source. I have this one and it powers laptop drives through the USB plus it comes with a SATA adapter and the power adapter to run 3.5" drives. It has been great and I would recommend it.

    I used a Zalman ZM-NB47J for my Nforce 4

I put that cooler on my A8N-E and the temps dropped 10C on the northbridge. I recently had to put the stock cooler back on due to the 8800GTS taking up so much space and the stock fan sucks. Definately go with the Zalman.

Yeak OK. The OS helps a lot when the hardware is done. It really sounds like a HDD to me as well, and I would recommend replacement, however you should also run Memtest86 to make sure you don't have any memory errors.
