I don't know about you, but the two times my house was raided both computers were gone. Computers are realitively easy to carry especially when you have a small tower. If I were your friend I wouldn't go cheap and just setup a security system and have camaras monitering.
It would be harder to carry if the screen gets bigger. Personally I like the size of the laptop the way it is now, I don't really see a need to have a larger screen.
I think that the Ram amount is fine unless your dad is doing something like Photoshop. I wouldn't mind going up to 384 though. I also would recommand 350 watt just so that you wouldn't need to get a new power supply later when you upgrade and plus the fact that it will be a safer route for...
