Wow. I just picked one up for $17.99 at CosmoGadget a few days ago.
After having been hurt badly by Symantec Systemworks, and researching antivirus software options a good bit, I reached the clear conclusion that NOD32 was the best option. So far very happy with it. Small footprint. Well...
My whole body was shaking when I realized what I had done...I may have now lost 10 years worth of files and data due to my stupidity and a bizarre sequence of events.
Please help by suggesting my best course of action and best data recovery software to try!
Here is the short story and...
Found the culprit. Enabling USB Mouse Support in the BIOS causes this problem. When disabled, the controller moves past post and boots. Wierd. Suspect it may be an IRQ issue (not that I have any particular device connected or anything like that...).
If anyone has a similar situation and wants...
Worked!
Set to Load Optimized Defaults.
Now have to figure out what was hindering it.
I was having trouble earlier with a hang sometimes when Quick POST is disabled. POST would hang before the memory test. I am beginning to suspect that my VDIMM needs to be increased. Could that be the...
If I connect my new Maxtor 300GB drive to either IDE3 or IDE4 - the HPT372 on-board RAID controller ports, the system does not get past the scanning devices screen. The drive is correctly detected, but nothing else happens. Ctrl-H has no response.
If the drive is not connected to the port, I...
Getting 2 of the 300 GB maxtors. Already have a Maxtor 160GB and it runs much more smoothly than my WD 120JBRTL.
I am finally going to use my epox 8K5A2+ RAID controller. Have been dallying on setting up a fault tolerance/backup solution. Recently had a bad experience with the Hitachi drive...
Goodness you guys are a tough group! But also seemingly lacking in inductive ability to correct for errors - if it is $20 off $100, it is quite obvious that it was a typo, and should have been "30 off 150".
I have the coupon. Anyone interested, let me know.
Ignore my previous post, and apologies for posting on this thread which is meant to be for the Hot Deal rather than tech questions.
I was able to get it to work. For those that may be interested: I am not sure of the exact steps that I took, but it involved Uninstalling the Device from Device...
Help!
How do I go about installing the DLink drivers?
I am on Win2K. When I tried to go through Device Manager/Update Driver and say Have Disk...Pointed to the downloaded drivers airplus.inf file. But I get a message that says, the specified file does not contain information about your...
Ruruoni, congratulations & thanks for keeping us all posted!
Take heart in the knowledge that you have educated numerous people with your informative posts. Perhaps also saved a number of people from headaches.

It would appear that Microsoft and mb manufactures would get the latest drivers at the same time. But there doesn't seem to be any way to tell how the MS version relates to the 2.4x version scheme.
Avance Sound Manager is available from Start/All Programs/Avance/SoundMan. Selecting it will put it in the system tray and you can launch from there as usual.
I have the same issue that russr does. Only one of the ports seems to be USB2.
RideFree, are you seeing all your ports listed as USB2 in Device Manager? Did this happen after installing SP1?
russr, did you find a solution to the problem?
Ruroni,
any body with a ossiloscope and knowledge of how to use it should be able to check the power supply in your location. there may be other devices. call a local electrician or go by a store that specializes in electrical hardware and they may be able to help you.
a ups is an...
Ruroni, I had a slight problem while installing the CPU. Here is the snippet from my previous post on this thread:
You might want to try reseating the CPU while keeping this in mind and then try again. Another thought is to ensure that you have clean power in your location. though the power...
Make some irrelevant change in the BIOS and save the settings. Upon reboot you will see PC2700 as it should be. It seems to me that if you do a cold boot, you will see the POST screen for a while longer than on a reset. I think the PC2100 is the factory default BIOS value that gets overriden by...
Ruroni, I would be mad too!
If there is any Epox CS person monitoring this thread, they will do well to learn that they could lose their reputation and customer base very quickly with such poor service.
interestingly, i am not able to increase Vdimm at all. increasing it by the smallest amount always causes inability to boot. this is irrespective of memory settings. strange.
any one else have this problem? i have a corsair xms512-2700c2 module in the first dimm slot.
has anyone with the 2+...
Well said Technonut, russr. I built my first system successfully, but not without trepidation about faulty components. My only strength was in the knowledge that I could turn to this forum for help.
Ruroni, keep the risk reward equation in mind as you evaluate your entire experience.
Also the...
ya Duvie, it does not explain reduction in performance. i am beginning to think that Prime95 stresses memory more than the CPU and increasing the FSB causes some kind of caching to allow the memory to keep up and this may be the cause of the reduction in performance.
did you happen to test...
oh i see. it is due to the SSE2 instruction set!
Duvie, how much memory do you have in your system and how much are you having Prime95 use? I used the max that it would allow - 459MB of the total of 512 that I have.
Duvie, just looked at benchmarks at mersenne.org and it appears that even the Celerons beat the hell out of the AMD CPUs! :Q
Good thing I didn't look at this before finalizing on my AMD system, or I might have been struggling with second thoughts.
What is happening here? Why are AMD CPUs so...
chmike, i can understand if Prime95 was not affected by increasing the FSB. But affected adversely?! Doesn't make sense, esp, when the FSB is synchronized to the DRAM clock at 166.
agree with using a real world application to benchmark. but isnt the very definition and purpose of a benchmark to...
:QPrime95 says overclocking the FSB is bad!:Q
My system:
XP 1600+ AGOIA F week 12
Epox 8K5A2+
Alpha PAL8045 + Artic Silver 3 + YS Tech adjustable speed fan (turned down low to reduce noise)
Antec Plus660AMG (TruePower330)
Corsair XMS 512MB PC2700 C2
Here are the Prime95 benchmarks for...
I dont think so LastRide. As I write this I am about 12hrs into Prime95 at 166FSB x 10.5 locked.
Experienced instability at default voltage after 3hrs. VCore was dipping to 1.74 sometimes. After a scientifically conducted 3 trial experiment ;), I have concluded that the VCore was dipping...
Look at AlphaWolf829's setup in this thread:
He has the VDimm at 2.9! I suspect that this is necessary to get the aggressive timings to work.
I have the same Corsair module. I was not able to boot up with 2-2-5-2-1T. Haven't had the courage to up the VDimm. Dont know what the risks are apart...
AlphaWolf829, I have the same Corsair module as you do, and an Antec 330W. I was not able to get my system to boot with the timings that you have set. Have not tried to up the VDimm yet. Did you also have boot up problems at stock voltage? Was increasing the VDimm the critical aspect to...
not true. my warranty expires 9/5/04 and the board has a round northbridge heatsink. this is based upon the premise that boards only manufactured after 9/1 carry the 2 year warranty. premise may not be true.
you could use a USB headphone. people claim (at least plantronics does) that it delivers better sound quality than the analog ones that connect to the headphone port. if you have a case with front USB ports, it may be more convenient than the rear headphone port.
sorry haven't oc'ed yet. i am new to this stuff :o
have no idea how to oc. but plan to do so as soon as i find the time to learn about it. i have the necessary setup to do it. cautious because i cant afford (cash) to fry any part of my system.
any advice/pointers/tips on where to start finding...
