Dumb question about hard drives - be first to clue in the newbie!

Dumb question for you all: Is there a difference in cabling between ide, ata/33, ata/66, and ata/100. I have an ata/100 drive on the way and wonder if it will plug directly into an older abit bh6 motherboard. Thanks.

Anyone confirm linux support for this setup? I did a search and found linux support for ata/100, but not in this specific configuration. I don't really want a ata/100 Pci conroller as a doorstop.

You may also wish to consider FreeBSD, an implementation of Berkely Unix. It is more secure than linux or NT but operates in much the same way as linux.

Favorite networking sites?

I'm a bit new to this game, as if you couldn't tell, so I was wondering where the pros here go to research networking issues? Specifically, Windows networking (I know where the linux goods are). I use microsoft's forums and technet but who else has good networking forums and articles? Thanks.

You should be able to do all that with linux using win98 clients with very nice performance. All the networks at school do that. Not sure about streaming quotes, but I've seen a lot of progs on freshmeat.net that stream from financial websites. For an NT person linux is ... challenging...

The best Print Servers?

We use intel, but its not a home network. Works like a champ but I think it cost about $400 a year or two ago. I say search deja newsgroups for the AXIS 5600 and see if people are moaning about it. Sorry I couldn't help you more.

One other cool thing about linux is that you can recompile the kernal to use only the features you need. It's possible to compile a very fast kernal with a very small memory footprint. Kewl.

At the risk of starting a flame war, it is my understanding that linux serves web pages more efficiently than windows. I have also read that linux serves files about as well as Windows with Samba installed.

Which protocol is best?

For doing file serve and print serve on Win2K server? NetBios NetBeui TCP/IP IPX/SPX Security isn't much of an issue, we have other secure servers for outside connection. I know IPX/SPX is probably out, but we do use it for Novell.

Best NIC for Win2k?

If its a workstation, any nic will do. If its a server with a lot of clients, get the fastest one you can find. It may say 10/100, but that isn't always the speed it runs.

You even hate little Alien Gonzales? Picard was the best because he clearly has mastered his craft. It would be a pleasure just to see him act in a commercial. The best series it TOS. Spock, Bones and Scotty somehow manage to come off as more interesting than thier counterparts on TNG.

Man, what is the deal with win2k? I run an Access based custom app, and we used to use Netware 4.11 on a Pentium Pro 200 for file serving. We switched to a dual P3 550, Raid 1 Dell server running Win2K as a file server and its maybe 4 times slower. Is win2K junk?
