Dahak, I had actually typed that out and never posted it last night. Did exactly that (found it on the Lenovo forums) and it worked. Amazing that their own BIOS update would basically kill the system it was installed on. Thanks for the help, guys.

Ugh. Might just have to do the Windows 7 bullshit then. That's... Pretty annoying. No secureboot option whatsoever in the BIOS.

Fardringle, as far as I can see, there's no option for this in the bios. That was my first instinct, but this is the most barebones, bullshit BIOS I've ever seen. Also, small thing: Desktop, not laptop.

Is Avast good replacement for Norton 360? And which firewall?

Avast is fine. Bitdefender free has basically become abandoned, for the most part. Lots of bugs that never gets fixed, though it still gets definition updates. If you want something free, I suggest Avira or Avast. AVG is good, but they publicly state they sell some of your info. It's not...

Handsoff setup recommendations for my father

If you want handsoff? Webroot along with Malwarebytes anti-malware, then toss in an ad blocker like uBlock. Maybe Adblock+, since it tends to need less interaction.

Recommendation for a MSE Alternative..

I personally recommend Avast, Fortinet or Panda cloud. Not a fan of BitDefender lately. The free version was buggy as all hell (for myself and many others) and the company's support & business practices are a bit shady.

I used Avast for a bit, and it worked fine, but that daily notification drove me up a wall. This was on Win8 x64. Bitdefender works wells when it wants to... You could literally do a fresh windows install, install Bitdefender, and get horrible performance on a Monday, then reformat and do it...

All antivirus programs are kind of mediocre

Installing an Antivirus after the fact also hurts your protection. Most focus on preventing things from touching your computer, not cleaning them up afterwards. Once you're infected, you're at the point where you'll want a Live CD.
