    ATI Video on Demand

RESOLVED - Thread may be locked. Thanks I was playing around with a new install of XP (original) and my ATI Radeon 8500 AIW TV feature. Something happened that a TV on Demand temp file exists somewhere. I found a place to click. When I do so, that box wants to save some 2+ hours of...

    Socket 478 P4 512 533 3.06 HT Cooler recommendations

As Samatha Stevens used say: "Welllllllll.....Maybe." I picked up a different rig from the corner. It has not been used for a while. I did some minor maintence to it. Replaced the BIOS battery. Plugged in a sound card wire, etc. Nothing that means anything to the discussion here...

How many fans should I get?

My problem with the choices shown is that too many of them are 3 pin fans. How many 3 pin plugs do you have to spare? I would be careful to select fans that use the 4 pin Molex plugs and have both male and female plugs so that you can daisy chain them depending on the number of plugs to spare...

Crucial was correct .. I can use 1 GB stick.

Thanks N7. That's the way I plan to play it. I beleive I have good airflow there. I just wish I had a reliable way to measure the memory temps without risk of a short. I have a spare temp sensor that I could place there but I worry about static electricity if I decide to remove the...

Crucial was correct .. I can use 1 GB stick.

Taltamir; See my reply to Blain above. These are 3 slot MBs. Slot 1 takes up Banks 1 & 2. The other two slots are for banks 3 & 4, but the other two slots are also wired to handle 1 stick for both other banks and keep a bank unused. That is the case here.

Crucial was correct .. I can use 1 GB stick.

Ya ... we did Blain. I agree the manual says up to 2 gig, but the chart quits at 2 sticks of 512. Crucial's rep guaranteed me 1 meg sticks would work or RMA for full refund. I got hungry and bought under that guarantee. I now have both 1 Gig sticks in my MB running just fine. My next...

    Chipset fan went bye bye

Thanks for that note. I have a 120 pointed at it from the case wall now. If I give it a nudge, it works for now. AFAIK, I have been blessed the originals have lasted a good while and are still available. I am stocking up on them given their cheap price and shipping. Getting them while I...

    old laptop needs OS upgrade

The big problem with sticking with Win98 or WinMe is the lack of update / patch support. I'm about to get the XP SP CDs so that I can delay being forced into Win XP and around the corner Windows 7 or whatever it finally gets called. Does anybody know if MS made a final patch/update CD for...

Crucial was correct .. I can use 1 GB stick.

Now that I verified Crucial was correct ... I can use a pair of 1 gig sticks in my MB. I am wondering if I should put a memory heatsink on these 1 gig double-sided DDR1 333 memory. I've never used memory heatsinks before. I'm concerned about spacing also. MB=Gigabyte GA8-PE800 Ultra and...

I understand some guys like Ford, some like Chevy. This is certainly that kind of thread. We agree on one thing. For that class of heatsink, copper is the way to go. :D I've seen those, Thermaltake A4012-02 TR2 M12 CPU Cooling Fan - Socket 478, Copper. The stock fan is way too slow...

    Chipset fan went bye bye

Sorry Homer, That does not fit my situation. These boards were purchased and built ca 2003-2005. They were in storage for a while, but that does not extend the warranty. Besides for $5.00 each, I can afford a fan.

After reviewing the material above and what I came across, I am going with the Thermalright XP-120 for for Intel P4 Socket 478 and 775. I did go nuts on the fan. Socket 478 P4 512 533 3.06 HT Cooler recommendations

I was considering H/P weight and how close to the case fan the total design would be. The 120cm case fan runs ~1300 rpm. How much of that airflow would get to the H/P effectively is a matter of guesswork. I'm enough of a gambler to run without some forced airflow. I assure you that possible...

SI-120 installed picture This review makes me wonder if I should mount the SI-120 fanless and use a 120mm fan on the case. That would require me to operate closed case all the times. The spacing would be very similar closed case, but deprive me of the supporting fan that I normally use...

    Bios Error?

Okay ... that may be your answer. When you visit with your guy, have him review the BIOS settings. (section by section) Gigabyte has more than one default. The safest default setting is most often not the one to use. I use the optimized settings, but I still have to modify the BIOS...

Thanks for a detailed reply. You are correct that I have not kept up. For the money you mention, I agree the cost is not the issue. IF I'm not too late, a new Volcano 7+ would be about $30 to $35 shipped. The factory refurbs are gone. So what you are suggesting is well within the $$ range...

    Bios Error?

After you flashed the BIOS, did you reset the optimum settings in the BIOS or use the defaulted ones. That could be the problem by itself if the checksum problem is solved. The defaulted settings after a BIOS flash or CMOS pin pull, is the slowest (safest) settings the board is capable of...

How much do you pay for internet, tv and landline?

Cable (TV only) about $52.29 tax included. Unfortunately, COX has shifted too many shopping channels and simlar GIGO to our level of service trying to fustrate folks like me to upgrading. Landline with Internet "up to 7MB/840 up" bundled is about $75 with tax. Add in $10.00 for Netflix...
