How do you tell a teacher you think he is flat out wrong?

I think it'd be much easier to argue that, rather than finding ourselves at the end of a Kuhnian revolution, i.e. in a new paradigm, we're in the middle of the transitional phase where new ideas have been introduced that upset the established paradigm. The technologies of the past few decades...

    got a new bike...

My understanding was in fact that the CX frame will generally be slightly less aggressive, but also with usually have a higher bottom bracket than a standard road frame. That's the case with my Surly Cross Check, anyway.

    got a new bike...

I've got a Surly Cross Check, also in bright orange. I can tell you that a cyclocross bike will be slower than a road bike, and there's not much you can do about it aside from using 23mm tires, which sorta defeats the purpose of going cyclocross in the first place.

Indian Wells Lobotomy Bock, Rogue Mocha Porter, some homebrew, and I'm finally going to drink the one bottle of Rolling Rock that's been in the fridge since July 4th.

What BEER are you drinking this weekend?

It's a shame you're out in Florida, then. San Diego seems to be, for better or for worse, focusing the majority of its beers on IPAs, DIPAs, IIPAs, and so on. Bell's Brewing even made a joke out of it with their Big Head DIPA, a "San Diego ale" "that's made with more attitude than hops and...

wow, are people that thin skinned these days?

Wait, what? Mexicans have been portrayed negatively in the United States long before the Taco Bell dog came along. It wasn't Mexicans internalizing the connection, it was Mexicans and other concerned individuals fearing that Taco Bell patrons would internalize the connection. Jesus, are you...

What BEER are you drinking this weekend?

Friday, I had a pint of Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye, then a bottle of Regenboog Guido (a dark, strong Belgian with honey and raisins). Saturday was the Stone 12th anniversary festival, where I had: Brew Dog Imperial Stout and Imperial IPA (the imperial stout was probably my favorite of the...

10 yr old handcuffed on bus during "incident"

This is the line that gets me: "saying she 'felt like [she] was going to be scarred for life.'" In other words, there is no indication that this will affect her psychologically or otherwise, but she has already decided that she'll never be the same.

    wtf is this?!

There are a number of stations that do this in my area, but I've never seen any being deceptive about it. There are always two sets of prices listed on the signs: cash and credit. As for debit payments, there are a lot of stations that are a bit shady, charging a $.45 fee without any notice...

San Diego's Stone Brewery 12th Anniversary Beer Festival in Cal State San Macro

Yes, the 12th is pretty damn good. It's a creative solution to the hop shortage, bittering the beer with chocolate. The end result is very tasty. I'm looking forward to the 8.8.8, probably going to get enough to cellar for a while. I just had my last bottle of the 6.6.6 a couple of weeks...

San Diego's Stone Brewery 12th Anniversary Beer Festival in Cal State San Macro

It's the 16th, actually. I've been to the 9th, 10th, and 11th. I'll definitely be there this year. I'm looking forward to the Ruination nuts and the beer brats. Mmm.

    Who here bikes to work?

I bike to school, which is also work. Frame is Surly Cross Check, components are mostly Shimano + Suntour front derailleur, 20 miles each way, 75-90 minutes depending on winds/legs, makes me feel great. It wakes me up, gets blood through my body and brain. I'm pumped up when I get there, and...

    Good Middle Eastern music

Find anything by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He was predominantly a singer of Qawwali music (from the Sufi sect of Islam). He was an incredible musician. And anything by Mohammad Reza Lotfi (setar and tar player) and/or Mohammad Reza Shajarian (a vocalist, perhaps commonly performing the kind of...

So I bought a 24 pack of Beer

I'll be the first to say that I'm jealous. We just started getting the 90-minute, Palo Santo, and Midas' Touch here in San Diego. Apparently Dogfish Head's new satellite brewery in Arizona is gearing up to make the 120, but it's not quite here yet. I can't wait!

If you had the chance to meet the most successful person in your industry...

Well, my reply is going to be irrelevant to most of the other people here, but the most successful person in my field was my tuba teacher (he passed away about two years ago). He was the top tubist in Southern California and was the first call player on EVERY movie soundtrack - if you've seen a...

how did black people get "white" last names?

Yes, there is no denying that. But there was something "special" about the American version of slavery in the extent to which the slaves were separated from their own culture. It's perhaps most apparent in the musical practices of slaves. Compare spirituals to, say, Afro-Peruvian music -...

At the moment, a novelty buy called SkullSplitter, a beer from Orkney Island north of Scotland. After this, probably some Lagunitas brew, either Censored or IPA.

    Unsuspected jobs?

Currently employed as a TA in the music dept at UCSD. Future employment will likely involve teaching music/(ethno)musicology at the university level, along with authorship on the subject. My main area of research is digital music and virtual communities, so that explains my connection to tech.

    Questions for Bicycle Riders

As someone who has had to deal with end-of-life wheels before, I would strongly recommend keeping a couple of spare spokes in your seat tube at all times. It's a terrible thing to have a broken spoke 10 miles from home, because you either wait for someone to come pick you up or you disengage...

    Road bike snobs

For road components: Sora, Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace Just to throw my 2 cents in: I recently built up a new commuter bike, but I put my priority on durability and dependability over sheer speed. I've got a steel frameset (Surly Cross-Check), bar end shifters, a mountain-gearing crankset...

    Good resource on Bicycles?

My advice would be to go to your LBS and have them fit you on a range of bikes, seeing as sizes between makes will be slightly different. Learn the procedure used to properly fit yourself, and then you can use that when you search for a used bike. I would strongly recommend against buying a...

What's the most expensive thing that was STOLEN from you??

My car, although the thieves parked it half a mile away without actually taking the hundreds of dollars worth of CDs from the backseat. Then the police found it. So, in a way, nothing has been stolen from me. Except for the $376 I had to pay to get my own damn car back.

    Grilled my first steak tonight

Well, to piggyback on your thread, I smoked my first roast last night. That was pretty awesome. Marinated it in oatmeal stout with a little bit of ginger and garlic, came out sweet and spicy. Plus I cooked up a little bit of lamb leg stuffed with garlic and skewered with rosemary sprigs...

    Anyone make tortillas at home?

Don't get one of the cheap aluminum ones. I had one of those before I went to Mexico and found a big, solid, heavy wooden one. The aluminum ones bend and get really screwed up if you use it heavily.
