OMG SUPER HOT!!!! Wireless game system with over 100+ games

The copyrights aren't anywhere remotely close to expiring. Works made for hire are protected under U.S. copyright for 95 years. Many other countries have shorter copyright terms, but still not anywhere near short enough for NES games to fall into the public domain. If the system really does...

    3/3=.9(to the infite)=1?

Combine P2 and P1 to get 9x = 10x - x = 9.9999.... - 0.9999... = 9. I'm not sure if the proof I gave is 100% mathematically-rigorous (to prove this "properly" you need to use limits) but it's much simpler to grasp for people who haven't taken calculus.

    3/3=.9(to the infite)=1?

    It's because 0.999... = 1. Proof: P1. x = 0.9999.... P2. 10x = 9.9999.... (P1 x 10) P3. 9x = 9 (P2 - P1) P4. x = 1 (P3 / 9) Q.E.D.

Which instruction scheme do you see becoming dominant?

I don't have it handy, but one of my textbooks has a table comparing power consumption of common embedded CPUs. The lowest-power x86 chip, an AMD system-on-a-chip whose name escapes me at the moment, still consumed several times more power than an Intel XScale PXA250. It's not exactly a fair...

    Time epsilon....

QNX and BeOS are both RTOSes. Both were free downloads for non-commercial use at some point in time, but I don't know if that's still true (especially since Be went under a while back).

    AMD multi threading

Not off the top of my head, but I have seen several benchmarks to that effect. To be honest, I'm not sure -- I'm not that familiar with the internals of the Netburst architecture specifically, so I'm just repeating what I've been told by people in the know. I assume they meant pipeline flushing.

    AMD multi threading

I think you're misunderstanding how the pipeline affects Hyperthreading. The P4 has a worse branch predictor than the Athlon and a much longer pipeline, so pipeline stalls are much more expensive on the P4 than on the Athlon. The only thing Hyperthreading does for the P4 is finding something...

    Big Oh.

Since n grows faster than log(n) as n goes to positive infinity, something O(log(n) / n) would actually get faster as n increases. I can't think of any useful algorithm that would exhibit that behavior.

    AGP

No they aren't. Different versions of the AGP spec use different voltages, so not all cards are compatible with all motherboards. Fortunately the different AGP revisions are keyed slightly differently, so you can't physically insert a card into a motherboard that would fry it.

    Video Codecs

Uncompressed 720p HDTV video would take (1280 x 720 pixels / frame) x (3 bytes / pixel) x (24 frames / s) = 66,355,200 bytes = 63.3 megabytes per second even before you started adding audio. If your movie was completely silent, you'd fit around 15 minutes of video on a double-layer Blu-ray...

    Another free energy hoax?

Let's see: "Physicist Bruce DePalma has a 100 kilowatt generator, which he invented, sitting in his garage. It could power his whole house, but if he turns it on, the government may confiscate it." It can't be produced because of a conspiracy. Strike 1. "His N machine, as it is called...

    The New Cell Processor

It's also untrue, except for a few special cases (like the Dreamcast and the Xbox). Nintendo in particular has repeatedly refuted that their consoles are sold at a loss. Keep in mind that Sony owns the equipment necessary to fabricate most -- if not all -- of their consoles' components...

    Improving the bubblesort.

That's not O(n). Worst case, somebody hands your algorithm an n-element array with all the elements already sorted in ascending order. Your algorithm will have to do a sort on the x-element array every step through the n-element array. That's O(nx log x) if you use a decent sorting algorithm...

    HDD sizes

I assume you're looking for an answer more complicated than "because 120 is bigger than 111" . . . ? Seriously, that's the reason. If they go by powers of 10 rather than powers of 2, then they can advertise their drives as being slightly larger than they really are. It's sort of a relic...

DVD / Divx aspect ratio & image quality

If the movie is 1.85:1 and the DVD is anamorphic (virtually all widescreen DVDs are nowadays), then you'll get the same vertical resolution as a full-screen DVD. If it's 2:35:1, then the vertical resolution will be a little bit lower than if were cropped to eliminate the black bars. You could...

Calculating PI, Gauss - Legendre method

printf() only prints floating-point numbers to 6 decimal places by default. You can override this by using the formatting string %.[x]f instead of %f, where [x] is the number of decimal places you want printed. Be warned that floating-point numbers are pretty inaccurate, so the more decimal...

    Any new File Systems?

IIRC, sometime around the release of NT 3.5, Microsoft announced that they were working on Cairo and that it would have a new database-based filesystem. (Cairo later became Windows NT 4.0.) I'm not sure when they started calling it WinFS, though.

CPU technology - less is more

Two words: legacy apps. Although it's worth noting that modern x86 processors are more-or-less RISC chips. The x86 instruction set is still CISC, but the CPU internally converts from x86 to RISC micro-operations.

HOT: Anime "Jin-Roh: the Wolf Brigade" for $4.99 at Amazon

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz $6 after PM & MIR

For the most part, it effectively disables your onboard sound, since 99% of all programs just send sound to the device set as Default. Some programs (mainly audio players and audio editors) let you override the default and pick which device to output to. There's not much practical you can do...

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz $6 after PM & MIR

You shouldn't even need to disable your on-board card: go to Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel and set your Santa Cruz to the default card, and they'll happily co-exist. The only known problem is that you may have to disable your Santa Cruz's game port in Device Manager, since it might...

Actually, I built a computer for my brother using an EP-8RDA+ motherboard, and the analog sound quality is pretty bad. It's not as bad as most integrated sound cards (*shudder*), but there's obvious distortion at the low end. It's true though that it varies widely across brands; I've built...

Chaintech Via Envy HT $27 - No Rebates!!

The short version of it is: In theory, it doesn't matter which sound card you pick for digital out, as long as it's got S/PDIF ports. In practice, some sound chipsets mess with the digital stream for no apparent reason. IIRC the Via chipset is one of the safe ones. Be warned that you can...

Chaintech Via Envy HT $27 - No Rebates!!

This one will probably not help much, because the chipset in question (Via Envy24HT) does not have DirectSound acceleration. The software codecs it uses are probably more efficient than the ones that come with most motherboards, but CPU utilization will still be higher than with a card that...

Free Panda Anti-Virus and Firewall for IT Professionals

I can almost guarantee you that's because Panda's virus database has a list of virus "fingerprints" that it uses to track down viruses. Warm: Retail ATI Radeon 9000 $60 AR at Best Buy

The Best Buy near me had the retail ATI Radeon 9000 (not Pro) AGP for $70 with a $10 mail-in-rebate. Oddly enough, I don't remember any mention of this in their ads, and Best Buy's Web site doesn't even list the card. Nothing spectacular, but it's about what you'd pay for an equivalent OEM...
