What can I do to test a new hard drive?

i agree with jwilliams... as someone who has literally used hundreds of drives, and have had a large number fail, from every manufacturer - drives go bad, sometimes come bad... If im buying a external Harddrive to use in my raid 6 array - before i potentially void the warranty by opening up...

this is what im using from now on... badblocks -svw -c 4096 -b 4096 /dev/sdb and then some smartctl commands prolly for internal drives

HTPC build help.

5 = yes , you can set up mythtv as a backend and use a plugin for xbmc to watch your recorded tv.... for number 6 go with a hdhomerun, and dont look back, one box, plugged in anywhere on your network, and can record two channels at a time

What is the best HTPC software?

XBMC for the frontend... Raid6 file server for the backend running nfs and samba MythTV to record TV shows (integrates with XBMC now) and XBMC is integrating PVR in an upcoming release. already in some subs....

Have you also looked at FreeNAS and unraid... just some other very popular options that are outthere... But i have a simple ubuntu file server setup running in raid6, sharing my media to anywhere in the house... the hardware required for a file sever can be quite low end... No need for all...

Warm? Toshiba DVD players at Outpost

I own a toshiba and a couple other dvd players.. for the average person they are ok.. minus all the chroma bug, type issues.. the one thing that bothers me about toshiba, is that they have a very noticable pause when changeing layers... just my 2 cents.. but definatly a decent price
