Promise ata/66 controller, how do i install win98 with it?

just go to promise's site. i did this exact thing myself. when you're installing windows you have the option to "press F6 to load 3rd party RAID / controller devices" (or something like that). you'll just need to find the proper drivers for your card (which exist). you'll need the file...

Gigabyte 8SG667 good buy or wait?

If the Gigabyte doesn't work I'm gonna look at the Asus board for the 648 again -- I doubt I'll go with it just cause I've had the taste of PC3200 DDR in my mouth and an extra $40 in my pocket in savings that this Gigabyte would give me. Since I'm not real excited about taking a drop in...

Poor RAID performance

Not to burst your bubble, but it seems hardware RAID isn't all that great (IDE) compared to software RAID and no RAID at all... Anandtech did a article You should prolly be getting faster than a single 5400 though... My feelings are that RAID is something better to play with than to actually...

Gigabyte 8SG667 good buy or wait?

Dag... I can't bring myself to invest in something I'm not sure about yet. Good point about the dropping of 648DX. My guess is that Gigabyte will stand by their claim. They're probably mostly done with the BIOS by now anyways. I just hope they do this soon!

Yeah all that sounds good. Just be careful with the linux setup -- I'd go with ext3 for the file system since it can handle the inevitable chunking by someone much better than ext2. Windows will be much easier but I hadn't thought about the cost factor :) (and the UPS is a good idea as well)...

WOW...I NEED HELP!!

IIRC your long bootup problem has to do with the system disk being the WD and the jumper settings on the drive itself. They have to be set just right for the thing to work. As for your IDE setup the best is always 1 device per channel if you can manage it. Also only the first channel may have...

just so you guys don't think i'm a complete wanker i'll say that i'm currently in IT and i've dealt with the pentium 133MHz'ers we only recently retired serving home directories/profiles to 300+ workstations up to a dual 2.53GHz Xeon, 2GB RAMBUS nVidia Quadra900XL w/ dual 20" flat panel...

IBM RMA - is this a good sign?

Yeah, as I said they took exactly 1 month to get mine back (from when I shipped). This was pretty early in the fiasco. They did, however, replace my 45GB 75GXP with a 60GB 60GXP which effectively took the rage out of me. Can't argue with free 15GB, but yes, I'd never buy another HD from them...

seems like that board can only get better right? as long as they don't screw anythign up, you'll be able to keep that memory crankin way up there and maybe get an FSB above 150MHz... Not that i'm one to talk -- i'm waiting to see what happens as well. I might go ahead and do the deed this...

Its been too long since I did Java or any real OO stuff, but... When you're dealing with objects, you can have the overall "class" which is a sort of blueprint for the object and you can also have "instances" of an object. There is only one "class" but there can many instances of a class. So...

And.... if you wait about 2-3-4 weeks there should be an Intel chipset out for Granite Bay (Dual channel DDR). Its only gonna be for 266MHz DDR but IIRC that will outperform 400MHz DDR (266MHz X 2 > 400MHz?). Any case, the RAM will be a lot cheaper (who knows you might be able to use 333MHz...

I'm looking at: ~$195 - P4 2.4B ~$105 - Gigabyte 8SG667 ~$190 - 512MB Corsair XMS DDR PC3200 CL2 RAM $500 give or take For $40 more perhaps the 2.53GHz P4 is worth it... Still deciding about this gigabyte board. Performs great and I don't need the crazy features on other boards...

BF1942 Server Admin question

So somewhere in their spotty documentation they say to setup remote administration you have to do a "admin.enableremoteadmin <password>" for EACH map that loads. This means you also have to be on the server to do this... If you faced this, you know it sucks. Is there any way around this...

Why no ASUS P4S8X review?

I just read the new Gigabyte 8SG667 review as well as the previous reviews for other 648 chipset mobos (Shuttle, MSI and Abit). The Asus P4S8X has been on sale since at least last Thursday on newegg... I still can't find the Gigabyte or MSI on there! Why isn't there a review of the Asus...

Accesing desktop hdd in laptop...

Well, there are adapters to allow you to use laptop drives with regular (40? 44?) pin IDE cables that are in desktop PCs. The laptop adapter has the IDE lines plus the power lines in the same connector. If you took one of these and used it in reverse that would prolly work, but you'd likely...

Would a cordless mouse work through a floor? (Updated: Yes it will)

Hey, I'd try to see if 12' worked ok... Just put the receiver outside the enclosure somewhere within LOS. As for mice, if you're trying to keep it cheap I noticed at my local BestBuy they had returned / out-of-box keyboards and mice that were real cheap -- like $17 for a logitech wireless...

is a HD w/ 8MB cache worth $20 more to you ?

From everything I've read it is definately worth it. The performance is better than a Cuda and it isn't much more noise than one. Even for $20 I'd do it -- in fact, I'm probably getting one tomorrow :) I can get it from dell.com for $105. Where did you find it? trasko

I got the same probs GTaudiofart has. :) Pepsei tells it best that they get about a month (2 if they're lucky) before I get wisked away by something better. If they don't get there junk together by then then you'll see everyone abandoning it. I hate to see a game with such potential die out...
