I just set up some reserved IPs for my computer, wife's computer, Roku and Game Console. Have phones/tablets that don't need reservations. We'll see if that helps.
Another random data point....
When Spectrum replaced my line from the pole to the inside they added an unneccessary splitter for...
So, the issues continue. I replaced the wifi/router with another cheap one just to see and it still has issues. A cable tester is on the way to check my cables. If there is a modem issues it's subtle because the modem shows no breaks in uptime.
A couple of things that MIGHT be causing the...
1. While I haven't swapped the cable (long cable run in the basement), two things minimize it's possibility. A. I can use said cable to get to the web interface of the modem even when the internet is down. B. The light on the router is amber which per the user manual means the router can see...
So, added wrinkle...
Internet has been stable all day today. Possibilty 1, some of my tweaks from yesterday took and worked.
Possiblity 2, the router has been placed upside down all day. Would that do anything? Weird.
I currently have an Arris SB8200 modem used with Spectrum at 200Mbps tier. Router is a Netgear Nighthawk AC2100 (yes, that's the actual model# stamped on the stupid thing; best i can see it is an R7200).
I have the following devices: Wired main computer; wireless to secondary computer
Two...
What's the best value motherboard to pair with one of these? I've got a microcenter within driving distance and my old tech NAS is falling through possibly, so I'm investigating a new tech NAS with a 5600G.
It definitely has a custom BIOS on it (from the documentation I've been reading). I don't think I have another working system. I'll poke around some more and see if it's worth the time making it work. Otherwise, I might swing completely modern with something like a 5600g as the basis.
Well, It's a custom "small" form factor thinkcentre that is more slim than small. So the motherboard is deep and runs front to back. There is a fixed drive cage in the 4U that JUST gets in the way. The thinkcentre board also has a custom horizontal fan mounted HS so I have to see if the...
Ok. Cracked open the old computer. It's a Lenovo ThinkCentre m57. Looks like an LGA 775 chipset. So I have 4 RAM slots (currently 2x1GB). A couple SATAs one PCI and one PCIe - X16. So, looks like I'm in business. Won't know which processor it is (they sold a bunch of different ones) until I...
This was going to be my music production computer back in the day. Had myself a PCI! audio interface, some rackmount preamps, analog mixer, ah...good memories.
Well....I ID'd the board. It's an ECS P6SEP-Me. For you youngins that's rocking a Socket 370 and has an ISA slot on it. Only IDE connectors on this bad boy. High end baby! ;)
I think I have a slightly newer mb/CPU/RAM combo I can toss in it, though. Wow! Blast from the past!
I wasn't really talking about the CPU or the software but the various I/O busses. If you go TOO old in your platform, then I would presume the various busses start to bottleneck the performance. I would also think a certain baseline of I/O buss would be needed to do something like running SSDs...
Thanks for the posts. I cracked open the old 4U case and it looks promising. 6 mounts for 3.5" spinners not counting the two bays for optical drives. It also looks like it has some old hardware in it, a MB, fanless CPU. I'll have to see if I can ID what's in it. That does lead me to a...
My biggest concern is running into a compatability/setup issue. And I don't use Linux typically, the most Unix I've been expose to is running a few command lines back in the day on my CAD box at Goodyear and moving around the file directory for our department. That was...a long time ago ;)...
Thanks for the info and thoughts. I focused on pre-built, let's focus on diy. How hard is it to set up freeNAS or something similar?
I've built a few computers and upgraded many more (in fact I have an old 4u server case that could be perfect for this. So I'm mostly asking about the software...
Which one did you end up getting? I think I'm leaning towards a 4 bay so I can run RAID 5 over the 4 drives. Something like the 453D. Still a bit away from pulling the trigger at the next sale but its the current leader in the clubhouse.
Umm...we agree. I didn't think my post indicated any question about that. That's why I asked if users typically used the bundled apps on mature platforms like QNAP or Synology or if they still might roll a 3rd party app or one used on their PC. It was implied that there always is an app. My...
Nice recommendation. Thanks! I've viewed some videos and read some articles. Filled in some gaps in my understanding nicely. Do you have another reviewer? I always like different perspectives.
When it comes to software, that was eye opening. A lot of information to digest. DIY NASers need...
So, in other words, mini home cloud storage :tonguewink:
Cloud storage = networked storage I access through the internet
NAS = networked storage I access through my LAN
Everything else is software wizardry to make things run smoother, safer, more securely, do fancier things or GUI to make it...
Thanks for the initial information and posts. Does anyone have something a little more in depth I can review (such as a good article on NAS). I'm techy enough to recognize all of these options, but, there really isn't enough information to shape a decision. I do appreciate everyone's input...
Need some experience and direction. I will try to provide as much background info as possible.
We just recently purchased a home. Between that, my relatively new computer, my wifes likely work from home new business, the latest google Kerfluffle and a job that can pay for it all, its well...
In reading the BIOS releases, apparently it was two times after the initial release that ryzen 5000s were officially supported. Weird for something designed to pair with those processors. I am actually surprised at how snappy it is just getting around. I wasn't expecting to much in that...
Per this thread, it might be a BIOS issue.

His system is very similar to mine.
Going to try downloading the latest BIOS, flash it and see if that fixes it.
Ok. I'm at my first wrinkle. So, I have a USB Stick with Win 10 Pro I've used in the past to install the OS (maybe one upgrade now that I think about it). Anyway. With the USB stick plugged in and recognized in the BIOS, I can't get it to boot. Doing UEFI Boot on the USB partition 1 gives...
Part 2 was mostly successful. Everything works. Posts, i can get into BIOS but i can't get it to boot from my windows 10 usb stick. Since it's late. I'll let it think for awhile in case I'm jumping the gun and sleep on it.
Well, part 1 of the swap was successful. My ol dig is working. Now fo the real test. As an aside, I think my current rig has had a loose HSF for awhile. Yikes! Probably been moved 1 to many times and the ol intel screw ratchets came undone. Kind of surpriesed it din't overheat.
It was more that I couldn't get the back plate standoffs through the motherboard when installed in the case. Took the mb out, went pretty smoothly after that. Time to swap.
Time for a dinner break. Got the HSF installed w/o too much trouble after I took the mb out of the case. RAM installed and everything back in the case. Now I have to harvest the PSU and videocard from this rig and swap them over.
Well, a bit of googling indicates that since it may take a fair amount of force to get the screws to engage I think I'll take the MB out of the case and install the HSF and RAM out of the case. Bummed to redo work but best to be safe.
Anyone? Should I have installed the HSF first before mounting the motherboard? I thought the opening in the case was so I didn't have to do that. But...I can't think of a nice way to keep the backing plate where it needs to go while I mount the HSF. Thoughts?
Wow, thanks! I would have been freaking out w/o your posts. Also, I've never dealt with a backing plate for the HSF assembly. Any tricks to that? This case is nice in that it has an opening for access to the back of the motherboard.
So, starting the new build assembly today. Should be pretty straight forward. But, it's been years since i installed a processor and mounted a hsf. Still makes me a bit nervous. I'll post if i run into any snags. Cheers!
