What's Low Level Format?

The HDD's maker should have diagnostic tools available on its Web site. The closest thing to a "low level format" that a home user should do is to write all 1's on the drive. If the hard drive is acting weird, a "low level format" isn't a bad idea. You'll need to partition and format the drive...

What is the best DDR 512MB Ram for under $80.00?

Just bought 2 512 Mb PC-3200 CAS3 sticks from Buffalo. The Samsung mem chips on them are approved for i865 by Intel/Asus. These sticks have the Samsungs soldered to a Taiwanese board in Japan. I sincerely hope that they'll work fine in Dual Channel on a Asus P4P8000 Pro sporting a 2.4C. At...

PSU help

It's hard to beat SPI Sparkle PS's in bang for buck. Some are optimized for Athlon XP's, others are designed to support P4's. Suggest that you read the fine print to assure that you will get the right model.

Dual Channel Memory and 865pe

The DIMMS are all supposed to be identical. If all four memory slots are populated, the board runs slower than 400 Mhz. 320 Mhz is the limit, if I remember correctly. If you wait too long before buying DDR that matches the sticks you already have, the exact modules may not be available. If you...

That's reassuring, thanks Chucko. The Eg was sold out of the Kingston Value PC-3200. I bought Buffalo PC-3200 sticks with Samsung SE chips instead. Fingers are crossed!

Motherboard Power Switch Connector Problem

It would help to post what m'board this is. Use a pin or needle to release the tiny lock on the pin in the plug, then slip the pin out out of the plug. You don't need to unlock the tiny brass lock to insert the electrical pin back in to the plug.

Good DDR for non-OC'd Intel 865GBFLK?

With a 2.4C on the Intel 865GBFLK, I'd like to run 2 512 Mb PC-3200 modules to take advantage of the Dual Channel feature. I don't want to OC, and I don't need the performance boost provided by expensive DDR. Are two 512 Mb sticks of Kingston PC-3200 with 3-3-3 Timing(I think) OK?

Any difference between expensive and cheap NICs?

Perhaps the new 1 Gb/s form factor adds complexity to this Q. There doesn't seem to be much difference in performance between expensive and cheap 10/100 NIC's. One caveat, ECS K7S5A's do not like the Netgear FA 313 at all. Pricewatch reveals that at least one model of 3com NIC is down to $20.

If your Vidcard came with a driver, install it. If not, yet the manufacturer has a Web site, DL it. The latest "reference" driver from nVidia isn't necessarily the best driver.

The Swap File works fastest when left right where it is by default. Or use 512 Mb(or more for Linux,BSD, Win2K or XP) of RAM and disable the Swap File.

Hint: the Help system in Win98SE will tell you all you need to know about setting up TCP/IP and File and Printer Sharing on two Win98 boxes. After you do it yourself, you've learned something! As to pinging a box on another network, I fess up. I don't know!

Celermine, Slotket, and linux

The "32 Kb" of cache refers to the L1(16 Kb + 16 Kb) cache, AFAIK. And a Celeron II is certainly a member of the PIII family. If the CPU isn't running things terribly slowly, your 128 Kb L2 cache is working just fine.

CTL monitors. Good, bad?

Thanks, anime. I can only find one seller of CTL's on Pricewatch, which gives me pause. I'll take your word for it, and get a CTX instead. Too bad, really. The CTL 15" CRT is $107, with a slightly better vertical refresh rate than the CTX. Sigh. Thanks again!

Millennium Glaciator on PPGA Celly?

Anyone installed a Glaciator 1 on a S370 mainboard with a PPGA(not Celly II) CPU? I ask because the SK7 clip on the Glaciator is a poor design. The buckle just wants to pop off. If it does so, the HSF is probably history, because its design doesn't allow you to simply replace the SK7 clip...

Is the Enlight 7237 already set to 110V?

The red voltage selection switch on the back of PS's can be set to two positions. One is ~110 VAC, the other is ~220 VAC. There's a slot in the sliding switch that the tip of a small common("flat blade")screwdriver fits into. Just make sure that ~220VAC isn't selected and visible, if you live in...

Enlight Case 7237 are the white wires + or -?

The hot side of the(twisted pair) wires from the case's front panel(IDE Activity, Power, Reset, etc) are colored, but not Black or White. The Black or White wire of these twisted pairs is indeed the Cold side, or return to ground.

BIOS trouble: "WARNING! This file is not an Asus BIOS..

Thanks for your response, AndyHui. I'm told that an "in-house" BIOS means that this BIOS was installed by Asus's lab or R&D folks. They neglected to flash my mainboard with a Public Release BIOS before they shipped it.

No, you can't. Perhaps a local shop will flash your BIOS chip, or install a new chip.

Win9x's are said to handle 512 Mb, max. This comes in handy if you have an i815 mainboard, neh? Intel Server boards take up to 4 Gb of Ram. Maybe 8 Gb? Hello *nix, or NT.
