Well, I went ahead and installed it.
The DirectX installation looks for components to update. Of course it didn't find any and finished without doing anything. Then I proceeded to install the game and it works fine.
I just tried installing Civilization IV (game of the year boxed edition) on Windows 7 (RC) and at the very beginning of the process, it says "Setup has determined that you need to install DirectX".
I pressed cancel, and it cancels setup. I also tried to cancel out of just the DirectX part of...
I've used BartPE several times in the past, and I was just about to make a new build with updated plugins. Then I found something called "Reatogo-X-PE" which is basically from a guy that had his own free, custom BartPE bundled with 500 plugins available. In researching whether or not that was...
Yeah, I think the UPS was the problem. It hasn't shut off since moving to a surge protector. Yay! Thanks for the suggestion.
Now the question is, what do I do with this UPS?
Well, after I got home yesterday, I moved the PC from the UPS to a surge protector. It did not shut down last night. I don't want to cheer just yet... the next few days will be very telling. But it's certainly something that generates some hope.
I'll try the surge protector idea for sure.
As for the indexing, is just the normal indexing that Windows XP and Windows Vista do for file searches. I don't attribute this problem to that, because my PC is idle during the day as well and I only discover it shut off in the morning, never...
I just started having trouble about two weeks ago where my desktop PC is powering off at night. Not every night, but I would say two out of three nights or three out of four.
A few days ago, I went to go on the PC around 7:30am and it was off. I powered it on and it gave me the error that...
Hmmm... Maybe it was a Samba or Linux problem after all. A few days ago I upgraded my Debian box. I just tried to upgrade it again and voila... the only things upgraded since a few days ago were some samba-related packages. Installed them and now I see all my folders again.
Oh, I should mention I have already changed the Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated."
I don't know if this is a Vista problem or a Samba problem. All I know is that it worked fine when I had XP.
I have a file server running on Debian. I put most of my downloads there as well as my music. I had been using iTunes, and it was a restore of my database from my XP install so...
jon, I think people just don't care. For many people, they don't hear what you are talking about or don't think it's so bad they have to go drop money on a sound card.
I had an Audigy in my old system from late '01, but I stuck with the Realtek onboard audio (the "HD" version, for whatever that is worth) for my new system I built in February. To be honest, the only difference I have noticed is when there is no sound at all. I can hear a bit of hiss and...
I'm having an issue with Vista Business x64. I can't get KB938979 installed.
I get errors like:
Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update 938979-45_RTM_neutral_PACKAGE from package KB938979(Update) into Staging(Staging) state
Windows Servicing failed to...
I just completed a new installation of Vista Business 64-bit. I decided to upgrade from Windows XP Professional 32-bit because I have 4 GB of physical RAM.
Well, I just got finished installing my drivers and I decided to look at system properties. It is seeing 3007 MB. I ran CPU-Z and it...
As I suspected. And yes I have already decrypted everything that was encrypted. Thanks for your answers.
BTW, I do have a backup of my EFS key from XP. Will it work in Vista? This is more curiosity than anything else. I thought about creating some text file and encrypting it and then...
Since I have 4GB of RAM and XP only sees 3GB, I have decided to move to Vista Business 64-bit. On my current computer, I have a 80GB primary drive which XP and my applications are installed on. I also have a 500GB secondary drive that possesses the contents of my My Documents folders and the...
I have been running a Samba server for awhile and there has been and issue that's been perplexing me for quite some time: how do you get Samba to create folders with the sticky bit already applied?
Aside from the private home folders and a music folder, I have a shared folder on which the...
Fairly recently, GAIM 2.0 beta 2 required a newer version of the GTK+ library, but GIMP required an older version. At the time, it was not possible to run both GAIM 2.0 b2 and GIMP due to library incompatibility.
But this was on Windows. I'm not sure if the same problem existed on Linux for...
I have a Samba file server. There are three shares, but for the purpose of this post, I'll discuss just one. This share is called [share] and it's smb.conf configuration is below:
The folder /home/share/misc has the following user/group/permissions settings:
In other words, it was...
Just tried RegmonNT at home to see what it's all about. In a minute's time, there were just shy of 14,000 registry calls. Is that normal? It seems that lsass and explorer constantly are polling the registry.
Thanks for the idea, I'll look into that.
Yeah, I know that is bogus, but the guy that set up our Citrix servers told her that for some reason (or at least, that's how she interpereted it), and now she thinks it's gospel.
She also never listens to anything I say. I've told her like 10...
We have a Citrix environment, with a published full desktop that most users use. The background of this desktop has no image, and is gray in color. My manager has it in her head that if it is any other color other than this gray, then it will cause server memory and CPU utilization to increase...
Yeah, I second this. I didn't have to "fool around" to get it to work, as EatSpam seems to think it does. "Supported" just means that VMware "supports" that configuration: they've tested and it are willing to help out if you have trouble. It's not some magic word or anything.
For my Debian...
Here is a step-by-step guide for Debian 3.1 (Sarge)
That's a barebones install of the OS, with no GUI. You use another workstation to setup the guest machines. It's all in the guide.
Rock-solid, low resource useage... it's great. I have two guest machines running on this setup on an old...
No kidding. I did some of his recommended stuff, and then a year or so later was finding I couldn't do things like Remote Assistance and other things and I couldn't remember how to turn it all back on.
Sorry, my bad. I should have read more closely.
I think the sub-heading threw me off - "Why not Windowxs XP + all applications on 1 partition?" To me, that part kind of suggests that the OP is looking for reasons why not to separate the Windows OS and applications in two (or more)...
But if you reformat the OS partition, all the registry entries stating which applications are installed on the system go with it, making many (most/all?) applications installed in a non-system partition worthless in the fresh install of the OS. The OS doesn't know they are there.
I have a copy of XP that I got at the university library when XP first came out. I assume is volume licensed since it doesn't ask for activation and the school uses the same CD-key in the labs when you install and play around with Windows XP in a virtual machine.
But it doesn't seem to be...
