Can a wireless network be totally wireless?

Note that with multiple clients connected to a single wireless access point or router, you'll be dividing the available bandwidth between all of them. Also, if you are using WEP or WPA encryption, it will further slow things down. The typical 802.11b connection with 128 bit WEP enabled will...

convert existing wired router into wap?

Actually, the wireless router will probably be the cheapest way to go, since they're the loss leaders for most companies. I guess they figure once you buy the router you'll buy wireless adapters at full price. :) You can frequently pick up 802.11b wireless routers for $10-20 after rebate, and...

    NETGEAR WGT624 PEOPLE HELP!!!

Some debugging tips. All machines are must be in the same subnet, i.e. 192.168.0.x where x is any number. The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 for most small networks. Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to...

    Comcast cable without a router?

Did you reset the cable modem and the PC? You won't get connected if you just move the cable from the router to the PC without cycling power on the cable modem and renewing the IP address on the PC.

    Slow speeds

If those speeds are in bytes, they don't seem that far out of line, depending on the signal quality and what encryption options you have enabled. Same comment for the wired connection. OTOH, if that's truly a bit figure, something is indeed wrong in both places...

Can I stack unmanaged gigabit switches?

I haven't tried stacking gigabit, but I'm pretty sure that two won't be much of an issue. There is obviously some latency addition when you stack any switch, I don't think it'll be significant for a two deep tier.

added a new machine to my network of 5 machines and now its noticibly slower? Why?

You're right, but I've seen 7-8 on many small networks, and I don't bother spending the client's money trying to squeeze the last mb/sec out of it. In 99.9% of the cases, it's not significant.

I confess, I never even thought of ICS, that's such an abortion that I rarely even discuss it. :)

added a new machine to my network of 5 machines and now its noticibly slower? Why?

7mb/sec seems pretty typical for a peer-to-peer 100mbit connection, what are you expecting?

    DHCP, or Static IP?

I have a bunch of systems running on a D-Link DI-614+ router, including my TiVo and a Linux box. I can't remember ever having a DHCP issue, and the network is rock-solid. I've installed a bunch of small networks for local businesses, and all of them use DHCP without any issues. I really don't...

    DHCP, or Static IP?

I was obviously addressing the actual situation being discussed in this thread when I was talking about DHCP reliability, that being a broadband router and a home network. IMO you'd be hard pressed to come up with a difference in reliability between DHCP and static IP addresses in that...

    DHCP, or Static IP?

IMO, there is no reason for the typical home user to go with static IP addresses, especially since most SOHO routers allow you to lock the IP address issued by the DHCP server to a specific hardware MAC address. This allows "static" IP addresses that are still administered from a single point...

Help getting gigabit to work with router!!!

The SMB prococol is obviously much better configured for speed on the server versions of Windows. I see at least a 2:1 increase in writing speed from a workstation to a remote computer when that computer is running Server 2003 vs. W2K Pro.

Storage solution for small company? (opinions)

I'm not sure what you're doing to the hard disks in your office, because I get a lot more than a year out of most IDE drives, and that's in systems that run 24/7... However, everyone's entitled to their opinion here, I just don't happen to think that RAID is worth the extra bother for a small...

Storage solution for small company? (opinions)

While IDE hard disks are not exactly the most reliable component on the planet, the average hard disk will last several years of continuous use. Why screw around with RAID for a small office if you have good backups? In addition, without proper configuration and maintenance, many RAID equipped...

Only connecting two computers: Gigabit crossover cable or Gigabit switch?

I was responding your the comment: "Gig ethernet uses all 4 pairs of the cable and as such all 4 pairs need to be crossed." It appeared that you were saying you needed a gigabit crossover cable for it to work, I've never even seen a gigabit crossover cable... :)

Storage solution for small company? (opinions)

You might look into something like a SnapServer, they come with a single disk or RAID. Personally, I'd have a daily backup and a simple single disk server for your situation, why fool around with RAID? I like USB 2.0 disks for off-site backup, and the backup is universally accessable to almost...

    HORRIBLE performance? - Gigabit Ethernet

FWIW, I don't get much improvement with two 2.4g P4 machines using Intel Pro/1000 MT boards over the old Netgear 100mbit boards when writing to the remote machine, about 30%. I get about 100-150% better speeds reading from the remote machine, but the real requirement is writing. OTOH, when I...

Only connecting two computers: Gigabit crossover cable or Gigabit switch?

If anyone had bothered to read the other exchanges on gigabit connections, you'd see that using typical desktop computers with 32 bit PCI gigabit cards, you'll be lucky to see any significant increase in file transfer speeds, especially writing from the client to the "server". In my tests, I've...

    Is gigabit worth it?

Unless you have a server O/S on the writing end, you'll see very little throughput advantage to gigabit. Writing to W2K on a AMD 2400+ machine, I get about 20% more throughput than using 100mbit adapters. OTOH, writing to the same machine booted with Server 2003, I get about 2.5 times the...

Whats a good wireless card to reach my neighbor next door at 75ft???

I think I'd look for a unit that has a single removable antenna, so you can use a directional antenna. Typically, the USB units are more convenient, since you can position them with more flexibility.

Whats a good wireless card to reach my neighbor next door at 75ft???

You might need some directional antennas, but 75 feet with an unobstructed view shouldn't be much of a problem.

Dead router = switch.... right? Read more inside

I can't believe that you're going to so much trouble to save the cost of a $10 five port switch! I'd second the recommendation to send it back to Linksys and get the flash issue resolved and have a router again. I have several five port Gigafast switches that I got free after rebate in my...

    Home/Work network problem

I've had several installations where I had to set a static IP address for a wireless installation to get proper operation. Perhaps if you manually configure it, it'll work. You might also need something like Netswitcher to change between configurations if you don't have XP.
