I remember reading a tip about removing broken keys years ago. Something about attaching one end of a wire to the positive battery terminal and the other to a pin. Then carefully touch the end of the pin to the back of the stuck key. When it touches, the arc will stick it to the key enabling...

Removing Dust

I have to clean out three computers every couple of months or so. The easiest way I have found is to take them outside, remove the side, and blow them out with the hose and crevice tool connected to the exhaust of my shop vac. I also use a small plastic rod to stick into the fans to keep them...

Soundcards and directx..........

I had a P4-2.8B on a Gigabyte GA-8IK1100 Motherboard that I was using for video encoding and gaming (Doom 3). The Gigabyte motherboard died and I got an Intel D875PBZ to replace it but the Intel board doesn't have the onboard sound like the Gigabyte. Doom 3 is supposed to require a DirectX 9...

cant play a dvd in PC dvd rom drive

If it is a DVD+R that you are trying to play, it may be that your DVD drive doesn't support it. Try DVD Identifier to see if your drive supports the disk.............

Most vacuum cleaners allow you to attach the hose to the output of the motor to blow dust off furniture, etc. Take your computer outside of the house and blow it off with the vacuum ......

Try it with the side off your case for better cooling. If it doesn't do it with the side off, then you need to improve the airflow through your case as its holding heat in. Just a thought...........

Side fan mounting question

Usually side fans are mounted over the processor and blowing in. Mounted low on the side and blowing out would be contrary to common practice of having cool air coming in at bottom and exiting at the top. Try it both ways and check temps, YMMV...........

How do you format a 3.5" floppy disk IBM-style?

I've got a program called 'flashboot.exe' that makes a bootable floppy that contains only Autoexec.bat. Command.com, Ibmbio.com, and Ibmdos.com, nothing else. This is probably what you're looking for. A boot floppy made by Windows will have drvspace on it and I think that is your problem...

Antec P160, no system speaker, can i add my own?

If your case doesn't have a speaker, its no problem to add your own. Rob one from an old 'throw-away' comp and you'll have the correct header. If not, rob one from a dead pocket radio or tape player and splice in a header from your parts box. You should be able to mount it inside your case...

ah man! I don't have a backplate for this motherboard, what do I do?

Make one from cardboard or tablet backing and then cover it with aluminum foil and install it with the foil to the inside of the case. You can tape it in place inside the case. Make sure any loose aluminum foil (where you cut openings for com ports, etc) are taped down, you don't want any...

Life of a CD-RW

I have been using a 10-pack of Office Depot 4X CD-RWs since September '02 and have lost only one. Slow, for sure, but the burner I was using at the office was only able to record them at 4X anyway.....
