Horrible SSD write speeds... not sure how to fix this :(

I guess i'll do a follow-up since this thread got revived somehow. The drive continued to exhibit similar problems shortly after a fresh re-image. Did a RMA and the new drive was just fine.

Something happened to my laptop that I didn't believe possible...

It's a couple years old. Not sure on charging cycles, but I was still getting a few hours on a charge (this thing usually sits on the coffee table in my living room, and is used casually here and there; only plugged in every week or so when it gets low)

Took my laptop (HP probook 6550b) to the airport - few minutes before it went through the security scanner/xray it was working fine, almost fully charged. Few minutes after? Won't turn on without the AC adapter plugged in, battery will not charge. Was not dropped and no one physically touched it...

Want to play new games ... upgrade later?

I would hold off on a major upgrade. The card you ordered should give you a lot more usable life, and you should be able add more ram for peanuts.

Atoms are.... "barely breathing" for a lack of better term. Streaming is rough at best, and transcoding is effectively impossible. ZFS with more than two drives will suffer badly. I would recommend starting by figuring out your software approach, and then working out your hardware requirements...

As someone who is in the middle of transitioning away from an atom based setup, I high recommend you don't go that route if you plan on doing any streaming. I used an Atom based mini-ITX board for FreeNAS w/ZFS and two drives and it worked great, but steaming was just out of the question.

Yeah encoding will be the bulk of the work I think, and this is going in a rack upstairs with a bunch of other hardware, so I don't foresee heat and noise being a real concern. If it is, I'll get one of those huge ungodly heatsinks with fans bigger than my head.

Yeah - quite the opposite of my last build! Here's what my server has been running on all this time: Yep, that's an atom 330. I ran Windows SBS 2011 Essentials on that board, but it can't handle any kind of video streaming or transcoding (big surprise!)

You're probably right, though I am looking at the Xeon E3-1230V2. It's 4 cores/8 threads, and the performance rankings are fantastic. Runs in a lot of normal desktop boards. Gonna have to do a lot more reading.

So something was wrong with my image; I restored and had the same problem. Installed win7 on my storage drives and wiped the SSD clean again, and here's what it gets: Gonna reinstall win7 on it fresh tonight.
