  1. Single ethernet plug in the living room

The problem with any of the cheap switches, is that they do not support multicast IGMP snooping. As such, with any of the telco TV (Telus TV, AT&T U-Verse, MTS Ultimate TV, etc) if you plug a set top box and some other device (computer, Xbox, etc) into the same switch, then all your TV traffic...
  2. Is Windows Server 8's Hyper-V finally the VMware killer?

MS is calling it Windows Server "8" with the 8 in quotation marks. Leads me to believe it may not be called "8."
  3. XBox Dash Update - Dec 2011 Ed.

Cloud saves are local and then sync back to the cloud, and they will work with a Live connection. If you browse your local hard drive, you'll see a 512 MB file called something like cloud save file.
  4. Is an iPhone used as a laptop modem as fast as a 3G stick?

For what it's worth, I usually get 2-3 Mb/sec downloads on the phone itself, and 2-5 Mb/sec down when tethering. When the speeds are high they seem to be a little quicker tethering than on the phone directly. As for an internet stick, don't know, never used one.
  5. 2.4 Ghz is too crowded for pratical use

This thread made me laugh...because I agree 100%. If I'm connect to my 2.4 Ghz network, it is slower than even bluetooth tether on my phone. That's with putting my network on the most free channel I can see. edit: oops, I see I'm bringing up an old thread. Sorry about that.
  6. E6600 High Stock Temps

I have a very similar setup to you P180, 4 fans all on flow, but I believe my cooler is the Ninja with the CPU fan on low (about 1300 RPM). My temps are almost always 1 degree below ambient, and peak under load at about 6 degrees ambient. Touching the base of the heatsink, these temps seem...
  7. 87 octane vs. 89 octane

Also, like someone previously has said, higher octane gas get worse mileage in cars that don't require it. Definitely something to keep in mind.
  8. Remote Restart Windows

Did you try shutdown /i yet? As long as you have admin priveleges on that machine, it should let you reboot it. It does seem to work over the internet, assuming nothing blocks the message. Worth giving a try.
  9. Question regarding Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6

I often missed things on their website, because all the sections (overview, specs, etc) all look the same. It seems their web site is slow to react a lot too, so that doesn't help.
  10. Question regarding Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6

According to the web page for that MB: 1 x UDMA ATA 100/66/33 connector So you could, but one would have to be set to slave.
  11. Nevermind

The lack of free space, means that all the space is currently allocated to a partition, so that makes perfect sense. Your posts make me want to stay away from using software raid 5 on my new build.
  12. Which Conroe Will You Be Buying?

E6600 for me. I'm hoping it will be dropped shipped to me around the 5th of July. That's so close, I need to finalize the rest of my build.
  13. Hurry up Intel

Makes sense, but just to see how it works out I've placed my order. If they raise the price they don't get my order...if it's delayed, I have the chance to order elsewhere, and if their face value claim works out, I get a nice computer built sooner rather than later. I'll be sure to let...
  14. Volume Delema

My cheap Sony home theater system (in which the DVD player doesn't play most DVD's any more) has the same thing...they call it night mode...very handy living in a condo with downstairs neighbors with a baby.
  15. Hurry up Intel

Since at the moment I'm not up to reading fine print... http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop/sho...=011003000509_BK12401P.shtml&ORDER_ID=!ORDERID!
  16. Volume Delema

Not that it's too likely, but at work when people tell me they have low volume, I always tell them to make sure their headphones are unplugged from the computer. This assumes you have speakers that mute when headphones are plugged in though.
  17. Hurry up Intel

I just did a quick check of a vendor found on froogle... CORE 2 DUO E6600 DC LGA775 2.4G 4MB EM64T HT 65NM 1066MHZ BOX Warehouse, Available, Incoming, ETA California, Southern 0 1620 07-05-2006 $343 Hardly seems like any extreme pricing or anything. They even let you place you...
  18. Volume Delema

Assuming that you have the PowerDVD volume on high, the windows master volume on high, and the wave volume (double the volume icon on your task bar on high), then I'd suggest enabling laptop mode in PowerDVD. Going into configuration, click the audio tab, then advanced, then click the Dynamic...
  19. Another ?should I RAID?" post

For $400, it seems like you can only get a 104GB (40GB uncompressed) tape drive. Backing up 1.5TB that way would take a long time. Even my potential array of 640GB wouldn't be Granted it would be easier than backing up to DVD, but for material that isn't extremely critical it hardly seems...
  20. Another ?should I RAID?" post

Then I would have 5 drives ;) and really I'm not sure if I would need that much space. My requirements are very flexible too, because they are often just my wants. It seems like right now, considering what every one has said, that 3 seperate drives might be best, and then just utilize them in...
  21. Another ?should I RAID?" post

I like that idea, but unfortunately it's a bit wasteful to me and pushes me over the amount I wanted to spend. Certainly something I will think more about though. As I really liked the hardware RAID I built into a media server I then turned around and sold.
  22. Another ?should I RAID?" post

Those are both good points. The bulk of the data I'm concerned about rarely changes. From my current server, I know RAID does add complexity (meaning in checking the event log, disk management for errors). I'm not too concerned with downtime, so long as I don't have to spend too much time...
  23. Another ?should I RAID?" post

While I like that option, the 750gb drive and even the 500gb are at a price premium that is not worthwhile to me. Speed is only a requirement in that I don't want things to be slow. I also wouldn't want an array to be slower than a single drive (is this the case with SATA drives that aren't...
  24. Another ?should I RAID?" post

Which is why I would still backup :) I personally have had a few drives fail that could not be completely recovered. I've had drives that work fine one day, and within 12 hours no longer are detected by Windows. In that case it was part of a RAID, so made recovery very easy. I definately...
  25. Another ?should I RAID?" post

I?ve read all the should I RAID posts, but none of them seem to cater to my situation, so? In a month or two I?ll be building a new system for myself. It will be replacing not having a desktop for the last 6 years and an aging fileserver. Currently the file server is in a software RAID 5...
  26. 7900 gt comparison

Return Merchandise Authorization...getting permission from the manufacture to return the product for warrenty issues.
  27. Operating temperature of pentium m

I'm only able to get my 1.86 GHz Pentium M to run at 75, even if I turn off the CPU fans. At that point the CPU does not throttle, but it seems the BIOS overrides my overriding fan set points.
  28. Dual-core system is suddenly much slower, esp. when hard drive is overworked

Is there an option in your bios to enable or disable NCQ? Possibly it got turned off and now when you hit the drive with more than one thing at a time it is much slower.
  29. Prime95

Use the tortue test option. If your goal is to heat up your CPU, that shouldn't take too long. To test stability, I usually let it ran for 24 hours or more. The program will t ell you if the results are not correct, indicating the CPU is not computing correctly. If it says everything has...
  30. Is it possible to change metadata?

Google "attribute magic" It does exactly what you want. I've used it to change the date on my photos when the camera is set wrong. It even works fine in trial mode (limited to adjusting batches of 20 or fewer I believe).
  31. Question regarding the PCI-e slots.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I believe all PCI-e slots are downward compatible, so you should be able to use a 8x, 4x, or 1x card in a 16x slot.
  32. 5 failed drives, all less than 1 year old!

Failed is in 1000's of errors in the event log, cannot read from the array in a timely manner (sometimes failing all together), Windows Disk Management console claiming the disk is failed, the drive failing the Seagate diagnostic tool, and the array working fine (just without redundancy) when...
  33. 5 failed drives, all less than 1 year old!

That looks nice...just have to decide if I want blue lighting, or want to keep the light pollution out of my future home theater / office.
  34. 5 failed drives, all less than 1 year old!

Seagate specs claim that temp is normal, but I always thought it was a bit warm also. I suppose I can leave a desk fan blowing at them until I get no drives in a real case. There case my clean setup of 2 wires (power and ethernet) going to a headless computer in a walk in closet. New case...
  35. 5 failed drives, all less than 1 year old!

No, the hard drives are on top of the case (but not each other) cool simply by convectin / ambient air.
  36. 5 failed drives, all less than 1 year old!

Upon looking up the specs...it was a 200 watt power supply, but not much different. I know on systems I build, power supplies are important...this was just a computer I rescued from the trash and added storage to. 500 watts is about what I was looking at for the Conroe system I wanted to build.
  37. 5 failed drives, all less than 1 year old!

Straighforward, since you can do it yourself after the first time :) but still costs money in return shipping each time (except they will waive it if the replacements fail quickly). Good to know about the PSU...I may start building myself a real machine, that doubles as a file server earlier...
  38. 5 failed drives, all less than 1 year old!

Mainly, I'm interested to know if it's worth it to keep RMAing these drives, or if I should just upgrade the array to a new SATA on that I planned on doing this summer after new CPUs come out. If the power supply could be killing them (but not the boot drive?) then I don't want to do that.
  39. 5 failed drives, all less than 1 year old!

Standard 170 watt power supply that come with this Compaq small outline PIII 933 Mhz, with build in sound and ethernet, only 1 pci slot being used (for the Promise card) and the 4 hard drives total.
  40. 5 failed drives, all less than 1 year old!

None of the drives are stacked on each other ;) I know that would be a bad thing.
