Like many theoretical parallel universes, that universe doesn't actually exist.
That thread predates the actual release of the 2.5"-capable units. I just put an i5 4250 into use as my everyday box, and 15mm is out of the question.

When the Series Two TiVo's with DVD drives in them first arrived (not all have burners; some, like mine, just play DVD's), they were bundled with free "TiVo Basic". That service level leaves out everything that makes a TiVo a TiVo. Basic does not support Season Passes and all the other goodies...
I believe the SkiFi model needs an additional accessory kit to be functional. Unless it's a replacement, you'll need either the car kit, the home kit, or the boombox to be able to actually use it.
The Series 1 TiVo's do not have a USB port, so that's obviously not an option for the older units. They have a diagnostic connector that's sort of a cross between a male ISA and PCI connector. The female Turbonet fits that connector.
