Except the funny part is the show has moved away from that quite a bit. Sure, it has always been fake, but now it is annoyingly fake. The first seasons had them hunting regularly and quite a bit of shooting. Now? Goofing around the warehouse and silly family scenarios.

The show jumped the shark. The article says the ratings were already in decline before Phil's comments. My guess about his comments? The show's attempt to grab ratings on the angry white Christian demographic.

I agree. People wanted to cash in on a Chik Fil A scenario while they could. Make the show a representation of 'god fearing murica' and then tap into that victim complex. Religious conservatives will do the rest.

I gave the show a shot purely due to it's popularity, and like with pretty much everything 'reality' I was soundly disappointed. The self-righteous cultural/religious aspect of it lent a certain trashy, butt hurt quality to it that I can't fully describe. All I know is it sucked, but I can see why it's extremely popular with a certain crowd.

atheists glad or mad?
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat,” Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew. “I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”
It was a Sunday school lesson illustrated on a snowy winter day along Highway 280 in Alabama with a chicken sandwich and a side of waffle fries.

I live around and work with enough real rednecks, I don't need to watch fake ones on TV. Although, I realized long ago all "reality" shows are BS, and if you accept they are BS, it is just really horrible TV.

Can somebody who knows where to find them, post their preppy pictures?

I really don't want to google for them and give them the search traffic.

Didn't the main guy on this show say blacks were subhumans who were better off under the jim crow laws?

That's probably a good way to alienate all the non racists in your viewer demographic.

No, here's his exact words.

Phil On Growing Up in Pre-Civil-Rights-Era Louisiana
“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field.... They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”

Ratings for the A&E show “Duck Dynasty” have fallen to their lowest point since 2012 in the wake of the scandal following racist and anti-LGBT remarks by family patriarch Phil Robertson. According to entertainment industry trade paper Variety, the show is hemorrhaging viewers, with audience numbers falling by about 2 million from week to week.

“One week after returning to kick off its fifth season with a 3.3 rating in adults 18 to 49 and 8.5 million viewers overall,” wrote Variety’s Rick Kissell, “’Duck Dynasty’ slid to a 2.9 in the demo and 6.65 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. This is the smallest same-night crowd for an original episode of the series since the second-season finale drew 6.45 million in December 2012.”

As Kissell points out, it’s hard to say whether the controversy itself has damaged the show’s appeal, or whether it was the revelation that the long-bearded, unkempt millionaires of the Robertson family were once clean-cut country-club preppies before they got a TV deal.

Or perhaps the show is simply a one-note flash in the pan whose popularity has run its course. Kissell suggests the latter, pointing out that ratings were already trending downward at the end of Season Four, which aired before Phil Robertson’s now-notorious interview with GQ.

The shows that ranked higher than “Duck Dynasty” in viewers in the key 18 to 49 demographic were “American Idol” — the reality singing competition that launched the careers of openly gay singers Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert — and “Modern Family,” a comedy series that features a gay married couple and an ethnically diverse cast.

------------------------------------

Well it was bound to happen. He really didn't do himself any favors doing what he did and saying the things he said. He basically brought his real life as a preppy college family man to light along with the others. LOL

Dear God NO. You guys know what this means?

My whole world view as a conservative has been exposed as a lie.

No one ridicules or blames anyone for pitching in during an emergency. The Brits call it "Dunkirk spirit," happens all the time in a variety of places for a variety of reasons. As much as it may sadden some christians, that behavior is not unique to their culture or history and isn't really proof of some superior ethos or lifestyle. People don't care, which is why you don't see anyone complaining or protesting about free chicken sandwiches given out in a storm. People do care when an organization says something like:

“This company is based on taking care of people and loving people before you’re worried about money or profit,”

...yet bankrolls anti-gay rights efforts to the tune of millions? Yeah, not important. A franchise owner doing what's almost become the norm in an emergency, giving out a couple hundred dollars worth of fried food? Well sheeeyit! Time for a feel good 'ain't we christians great?!' story! All that love nonsense, it's like Sex Panther. Pungent; it sears the nostrils!

Seriously though, I applaud that CFA location for doing that. Unfortunately, it's not that significant and it doesn't address what I was said about ratings wrt to the show's controversy at all.

Cry babies? Sorry, this thread isn't about Boehner, focus. Being unimpressed with mediocrity and window dressing doesn't constitute being a wimp, it just means you have standards and in this case would probably prefer something from the Outdoor Channel, or involving Tred Barta or Jim Shocky.

Try post 38 in this thread.

FWIW, I don't consider those pics particularly damning at all.

I feel what they all looked like years prior to their success doesn't reflect on the quality of the show anywhere near as badly as the corny scripted style of what is essentially a commercial for people who feel they are in (and losing) a culture war.

Try reading what he said again. I think I my summary was succinct. The only other possibility is that he has Alzheimers and can't be held accountable for what he says. If you consider being able to vote and not being treated a second class citizen as an entitlement, then you don't consider the person in question to be an equal human being.

I read his exact words, those on the left including yourself want to spin his words as something other than what he said.

What am I "on the left" of exactly? I despise whiny liberals, I vote libertarian and I'm pro-gun. So why don't you try using your noggin for once instead of letting the talking heads do all your thinking for you.

Ok, please provide the link to him saying what you claim in the following quote.

I don't think they are fake rednecks. These are very smart, very educated people. When they were playing in the corporate world, they looked and behaved as was required to get ahead in that world. When they grew their own part of that world, they were free to look and behave as they wish. I can't judge whether they are hamming that up for the cameras as I've never seen the show and I don't know them, but clearly no one grows beards like those in a month or two.

I agree that all "reality" TV is just really horrible TV, which is why I watch none of it. But if I HAD to watch some, it would be something like this or American Pickers, not one of those where we get to watch someone's (hopefully fake) misery and people are encouraged to stab each other in the back.

Oh yea, because blacks were so happy back in the day during that whole pre-civil rights movement thing...lmao

I find this whole "cognitive dissonance" on your end quite amusing...

Southern America had a simple but effective policy on black people pre-civil rights era.

"Be happy - or we will fucking kill you."

Ergo one did not see a lot of unhappy black people.

Iran maintains a similar policy on being straight. Ergo one does not see many gay people in Iran.
