Any one heard this paradox?
It's some thing from an ancient greek philosopher.


achilles is running at a constant velocity. someone shoots an arrow at him form a given distance behind him. the arrow is travelling faster than achilles. let the time it takes the arrow to catch up to the position of achilles be delta t. during this time achilles moves forward a finite distance, his velocity times delta t, while the arrow has moved to the point where achilles was before delta t. then the arrow moves forward to the position where achilles is now in time delta t2, and again achilles moves forward his velocity times delta t2. this continues infinately and achilles always moves a finite distance ahead of the arrow during each time step

although anyone who's taken physics knows this is wrong, the math seems to make it true

Actually, they're both "Zeno's Paradox"; he came up with several of them. They're basically observations that time and space must be infinitely divisible (although this is not clear until you have calculus to solve the infinite sums cleanly with).

You are correct; this is not a proof, since it relies on the item you're trying to prove being true. However, see my posts above where I discuss the problem in terms of the limit of the infinite sum (9 * 10^-x). That is a proof that .999[r] = 1.

0.0000..09 is my best description of the difference that would result from the subtraction.

See my other post above where I reference 0.000...01 (other people have brought this objection up already) and show that this "number" (which cannot be defined as a real number) must be equal to zero. And if (a - b = 0), then (a = b).

I'm a little fuzzy on low-level quantum mechanics, but I think the gist is that *energy* is "grainy", not necessarily space and time. I may be misinterpreting what I've read, though.

In any case, space and time are not the same as mathematics. Mathematics is a closed and fully defined system. You can prove, mathematically, that .999[r] = 1 (see above). We have no way to "prove" anything experimentally about the nature of space and time, other than by making observations and trying to come up with rules that fit them.

Zeno's "paradox" is only a paradox if you don't have integral calculus, because without it you can't prove that the infinite series has a finite limit. The more well-known one is "Achilles and the Tortoise":

A tortoise starts out some distance d in front of Achilles, walking away from him at velocity v_t. Achilles runs towards the tortoise (moving faster than the tortoise, obviously). How far does he have to run to catch the tortoise (or, alternatively, how long will it take him to catch it)?

When he reaches the point where the tortoise started (position x), the tortoise has moved some distance, so he has not reached it yet (the turtle is now at position (d + t_1 * v_t), where t_1 is the time it took Achilles to move from position 0 to d). But when Achilles reaches position (d + t_1 * v_t), at time t_2, the turtle is not *there*, either, since it takes some amount of time for him to get there -- the turtle is now at position (d + (t_1 * v_t) + ((t_2 - t_1) * v_t)). This will continue indefinitely (the turtle always moves a nonzero distance in the time it takes Achilles to "catch up" to his last position), and thus Achilles will "never" catch the tortoise (hence the paradox). The conclusion to be drawn from this is that time and distance must not be infinitely divisible (since, clearly, you can catch slow-moving objects ) -- but this is not the correct answer.

With the mathematics they had at the time, you could not solve this problem fully. However, you can rewrite the equations as an infinite series and, with calculus, show that the time and distance required converge to finite numbers as the number of terms goes to infinity.

Time has a lower limit we know about called the planck time, 10^-42 seconds. That's the smallest amount of time physics knows about right now. As for space, there have been a few papers put out recently suggesting that space is grainy as well, but I can't recall or point you to them.

Something like that elementary school brain-twister that says a man starting at A can never get to B because he can only get to half the distance of each resulting distance from the destination.

I always just figured that the flaw with both of these paradoxes was that the calculation always assumed the destination as being something other than the actual destination stated. The arrow won't stop at the point that Achilles was, it will continue to change position in space in a linear direction faster than Achilles' position changes, therefore the arrow will meet its destination (Achilles) at some point. Just like the man walking from point A to point B isn't looking to stop half-way, he will continue to walk past every half-point and eventually complete the total distance between the two points, resulting in his destination. Or, you could assume that his destination, point B, is half the distance to point C, not the destination. So the paradox agrees with the fact that the man will reach his destination.

As I said, all those "half distance" games are just expressing the moment of arrival in an infinite sum. Nothing wrong with doing that, except that it's a MISPWOSO stylee approach.

Another example: Man walks dog on a five-kilometer path, the man walking at five km/h. The dog runs free, at twice the man's speed. Dog knows destination, keeps running to and fro the destination and the man, in ever more quick oscillations if you dare say dogs oscillate. Question: What distance does the dog cover in his infinitively faster zig-zagging motion?

I'm a little sketchy on it, but I thought that while they were infinitely divisible, as some point, the divisions become absolutely meaningless. Planck's distance, IIRC. (about 1/ 10^20th of the diameter of a proton)
And, divisions of time smaller than the amount of time it takes light to cross that distance are meaningless as well.

Well...what i meant was that a variable (x) can only represent 1 value in the same equation. That equation that says : x=.9999999
10x=9.9999999999
10x-x=9x=9
9x/9=1
x=1

is wrong because at the beginning x=.99999999 but then x=1.

Oh, and wtf, since when does .3333333=1/3? every 3 you add will only make it closer to 1/3 but it never will equal 1/3

lets say you have a body that starts from rest at the top of a building and falls for 10.913 seconds before hitting the ground. if we want to know the final velocity of the body we can use this equation, velocity(final)=velocity(initial)+acceleration*time. assuming that gravity is the only force acting on the body we can say that the acceleration is 9.8 meters/second^2. since the initial velocity is zero, the equation looks like this, v(final)=(9.8 m/s^2)*(10.913 s)=106.947 s. you should use 106.9 instead of 106.947, though, because you weren't given any more information that 9.8 m/s^2 in your original data, so you shouldn't end up with data that is more precise than what you were given.
