What car do you think would win in a head to head race from a stop, an 05 Mustang GT or a 99 Camaro Z28?

Edit: Both stock to be fair.

well looking at carpoint the z280 has 5 more HP, and 15 more tq, but it doesn't have the weight of the mustang. i'd say its a dead even, perhaps a very very slight edge to the camaro

GT is the Mustang trim level that has a V8, always has been since the trim level was introduced.

'99 Camaro Z28:
ohv V8 5.7 305hp 335lb/ft2
3306 lbs curb weight

'05 Mustang GT:
4.6L OHV 24V V8 300hp 320lb/ft2
3450 curb weight

**Assuming gearing and torque/hp curves are similar, the Z28 still wins by a nose.

Desktop racing is gay... specs mean nothing without knowing the gearing, weight distribution and tires.... not to mention they are really close, therefore driver would play a much more important role than car.

It really doesn't matter. I would have never gotten into the argument about which car is faster stock because for years the Camaro V8 trim levels had that one on paper and in the real world for the most part but comparing it to the 2005 GT is more on a level playing field. What is important to understand is that the Mustang is still around and the Camaro isn't, ever wonder why? Firstly, the Camaro turned into a huge POS with a big engine. The cars themselves were some of the biggest pieces of junk to roll off of a production line....ask me how I know?....there is one in my driveway. Secondly. about 75% of the Pony car market has always been the lower HP commuter type of vehilces that appeal to women and the Camaro simply stunk in this role because the buyers here were going to the Mustang, ever wonder why the Mustang ALWAYS outsold the Camaro by an over 2:1 margin? Thirdly, the demographic that the SS/Z28 Camaros appealed to had a hard time getting insurance for them. GM killed the Camaro with bad engineering and crappy marketing. GM as a company just doesn't get it, whereas Ford understood and continues to understand the market.

Coming from someone with the name "Ronstang" I can see how you feel emasculated by a car that always had a performance advantage and need to defend the Mustang with other off topic statistics. And your comment about the Camaro being a piece of junk just shows your falsly opinionated bias.

So you judge an entire platform off your personal experience?

Camaro > Mustang

dont forget there were "2" versions of the camaro. the Trans AM and the Camaro. combined they sold competitively with the Stang.

According to this site, the fastest z28 time from an auto rag was 13.46@106.48 recorded in the Feb/Mar '96 Muscle Car Review issue. Motor Trend has the 2005 Mustang GT listed as 13.6@103.6. Those numbers are not directly comparable due to different drivers at different times on different tracks in different environmental conditions.

To summarily state [Camaro|Mustang] > [Mustang|Camaro] (wrt 1/4 mi times '05 GT v. '99 Z28) without head-to-head testing is simply an extension of the ages-old Ford v. Chevy, Mustang v. Camaro fanboi nearsightedness....

I'm pretty sure that is incorrect, I think the 2:1 figure included all platform variants of the Camaro.

Fact of the matter was that the Mustang was a much better car to live with, even if the Camaro had a far superior engine.

The Camaro had a solid performance lead over the Mustang (in both V6 and V8 trims) up until the day it was axed, there was no question as to which was the faster car. Only now (with the 05 GT) is the Mustang even close to competing.

iirc, the camaro's performance lead was only true for the last gen camaro.

regardless, both cars are rather underrated, in terms of horsepower.

The camaro would win by a hair given the fact that the drivers and tires are equal.
