So I was making the rounds of my local resellers and found this CPU. I already have a good clocking 3200+. I couldnt decide whether to try this out or maybe spring for an FX-55. Extreme ends of the spectrum for sure but I feel the pull of 3.0GHz and seeing what my 3dmark2001SE score would be (shallow, I know).

So anybody playing with this vintage?

UPDATE 1: So I went back and purchased it this morning as I am hoping for 2.7GHz at around default voltage. I'll try to have some screenies up.

UPDATE 2: Well so much for finding out what she does. It was DOA. Refused to POST. Oh well, will have to return this one.

02/22/05 UPDATE: Exchanged DOA CPU for another 0503 and saw another 0503...so I bought it as well MUHAHAHAHA! May be I should have bought the 0451 that they had as well to confirm what a bad CPU it was.

UPDATE: Installed successfully and now going through the isolation phase.

UPDATE: Best I can do is 2.295 (255x9, HTT@3X, mem@133). Barely stable in Windows XP after applying 1.45V. I don't think its worth pursuing anymore.
NEXT.........

UPDATE: 2nd CPU installed with the exact same codes.

UPDATE: Well...I'm at 2.430 (270x9, HTT@3X, mem@133) @1.5V. Caboob says stay away! These ones SUCK.

My belief is that there must be demand for the higher speed grades so nice chips are not being binned down. After I unload these, I'll try a bunch of 3200+.

i have heard FX55s getting to 3.0ghz on water...vapochill is not needed unless you want a bit more....

That is also the newest I have seen to date....May have been worth testing.....

What I would like to see is a person who has a nice overclocking system (proven!!!) get a newer 0451-0503 and see if all the doom and gloom is true...fact is I dont trust some of you guys and your systems (flaky ram, flaky power supplies, know how in bios tweaks) and methods (isolation and consolidation).....

I just cant imagine how the yields have gotten so bad the latter on whe have come since even my week 36....I would expect a bit better, but similar at least....

So after I find the highest clock I get I will test stability with Folding@Home (cuz I work in Biotech) along with looping demos of 3dmark2001 going overnight.

2 day comp show coming this weekend... there's not much that I'll buy at these shows but retail boxed CPUS are one thing, I can get decent prices (GoGo no NH sales tax) and I can pick through everyone's stock looking for weeks/steppings I want. I'm tempted here, because the story of my OCing life has been that I always get better results with a 2nd chip. Happened with my 300 cellies, 600 and 700 P3s AND my 1.8 northies. Maybe I'll grab a 3000+ if I see a recent one and give it a go...

Well, that sucks rocks sorry you went through the time and expense for such a disappointing chip. If I see more reports like this I think I'll stay away and just look for a 48 if I try another chip.

No, I got it from a local store. But I wouldnt be surprised if you got the same week as mine if they turn over their stock quickly.

Yeah. That might be true. I'll hold out until Venice Core is avaliable and PCI-E Cards arent price ouged anymore. Only THEN will I buy my new system

I prolly would be better served waiting for a Venice core since I already got a nice clocking 3200.

well i was hoping you had batter results with your 0503

I have the exact same stepping. just installed last night

CBBID 0503 APFW

epox 9nda3j

285x9 for 2565mhz

httx3 133mem divider

pny pc3500 tested clean up to 240 2.5 3 3 10 1t, going to try 166 divider once i find CPU ceiling.

It booted at 2610mhz but the extra voltage and heat generated didnt seem worth the extra 50mhz effort. Although i was really looking to get 2.6ghz If i was using a zalman or xp-90 i might push the subject, but right now I'm at 2565mhz 36@idle 45@load 1.50 volts (epox undervolts using +.15 cpu core) with retail HSF and good case cooling.

mem @2.8v if i dont run 166 divider, i'll probably drop this to 2.6 since its only running at 190mhz

Since I watercool, those temps seem uncomfortable to me. If you go to water, you should be OK temp-wise. On water, most people are going to 1.6V. My 3200 loads at 41C while pumping 1.6V through it.

whinnners. It takes 1.85v to get my CH to 2.4ghz. We can trade, really, we can! what has our world come to when people are dissapointed with a 600mhz oc at stock voltage. Really, you guys are asking for too much from AMD...
