Not necessarily. If yields got so good (week 48 2.8 on stock and air) then AMD would not worry about getting enough of high quality chips and simply could do something to limit overclocking potential of low-end chips. I believe that what actually happened

I actually believe the demand is higher for 3200+ and 3500+ chips and the old 3000+ is getting the shaft (the true lower clocked chips)....It happens!!!

I have seen ppl getting just as good oc's with the 3500+ 2005 chips then they were with the week 40+ 2004 chips.....

I'll update here also...

looks like my sweet spot is

2565 285x9 1.55v in bios (1.47v idle - 1.53v load in 2 seperate monitoring tools)

35c idle
44c load

not to shabby... i think i could get to 2.6 with maybe 1.65 volts, but thats just too much juice for my taste going through a .90 winnie for only 35mhz...

Went to show today... didn't find a 48, nearly everyone there was stocking CBBID 050x, except for one vendor who had a few of these 3000+ retail chips: CBBHD 0449MPM

Decided to take a chance on one... it's in the machine now running @ 300x9 3x HTT on 1.545 volts, idling at 32º C. Still lots of testing and tuning to do... I gotta head out tonight, only had time to pop the chip in and see if it would hit 2.7 on decent voltage...

Looks like we got a keeper here though

What exactly does the "CBBHD 0449MPM" mean? Is it the revision id? What utility are you guys using to get this info? How can I find out what week my chip was made? When I run CPU-Z it says my revision is DH8-D0. Thanks in advance guys.

CBBHD means the cpu stepping code.

0449MPM means it's a week 49 2004 chip. The MPM don't really know. May be someone can help on that. Or they can correct me if I missed up decoding it. I just got this cpu with this stepping on my winnie A64 3200+. Can anyone report any info on how well it has been OCing? Thanks in advance.

I just ordered a retail a 3000+ from Monarch. Anyone know the overclocking potential on these?

kevboy,

maybe you'll get lucky but its likely you'll be getting a CPU made in 2005 and it'll be hit or miss. If you can hit 2400, I'd call that a very good chip for this series.

i agree with caboob's theory - maybe the best chips are starting to be rounded up for a move to higher end 90nm chips. Considering the big price drops on the high end, like the 3800+ and 4000+, it would make sense they would want to migrate to a smaller process. I'm just glad I got my chip when I did, since I'd probably stuck about 200MHz lower if I had waited till now to get my CPU. I think mine's a week 49 or something, BTW.

Oh, yeah, and I doubt we'll be seeing many 2.8GHz winchesters any time soon. The only reason that FXs can hit those speeds is that the core uses Strained Silicon, and SSDOI isn't coming to 90nm parts till rev E0. So if you are really wanting better speeds, you might as well wait for one of those parts. Besides, they have the added bonus of being able to run 4 dimms at full speed, and SSE3 to boot.
