But in addition to screen size/resolution ... is there an accurate way to define the clarity of the image? Is dot pitch a good measure? How would you measure looking at 2 different 17" lcds at the same res and quantifying that one looks better than the other.

Dot pitch does not vary for LCD monitors of the same size (unlike CRTs). It's fixed. Normally you would differentiate monitors by contrast, viewing angle, ghosting (if you are a gamer), color fidelity.

I will comment on the 19" Planar. I had a Planar PL-191 monitor about a month ago. I play games so I wanted no ghosting. The monitor ghosted, but not as bad as some other LCDs that I have seen. The occasional gamer would like the PL-191.

I returned my 19" Planar becuase after 3 days it started sprouting dead pixels. It had no dead pixels when I got it, but it got 3 bad pixels after 4 days, not good!

I instead bought a PX171, the 17" LCD with the 16ms response time. I am very impressed with this monitor! Zero ghosting, no dead pixels, I'm very happy!

Be careful with the PL190, the PX191 would be a decent monitor, but you won't see it for $488 like the PL190 model.

Size doesn't mean everything in this case

yep, i'm just confirming that the $50 off $450 applies to the price BEFORE the 10% (which you can see as the striked-out price on the page), that's one of the reasons why this deal is so hot!

Click on the link in the bottom of this thread starter. It's all there.

BTW, it is 50 off 450 coupon, but it worked for NEC 1760NX BK, which is 449.XX (<450) before the coupon. Or maybe because it is over 450 before the 10% discount. Anyhow, I ordered this LCD < $400. A decent deal, I guess.

I'm a bit confused on the resolution of the Planar 190M. Its lsited on Planar's site as Supported Resolutions: 1280x1024. The 191M is listed as Supported Resolutions: SXGA (1280 x 1024), XGA (1024 x 768), SVGA (800 x 600), VGA (640 x 480), and others

Does that mean the 190M is a fixed resolution? It cant be... but I prefer 800x600 for my online reading, so I don't want to take a chance...

I have just ordered a 1800FP myself, I can't wait for a better deal

It's quite interesting what you guys are saying about ghosting on the 1800FP. From what I have read, most users say they see no ghosting with the 1800FP in Quake3 and UT2k3, which are both very fast paced games...

The 190 and 170's are the older planar models. I would not bother with them, unless you don't play any games.

I jumped on the 1800FP. $489.10 when all was said and done. The $50 coupon is applied AFTER the 10% discount, which is a good thing (0.10 * 600 > 0.10 * 550).

I have both... 19" planar and a couple of the dell 18.1" I got for 340 bucks a couple of months ago.

Anyway... I use the 19" for work. I'm typing on it now. It's definitely bigger then my dells @ home... It is just as bright but the ghosting I can't stand. Don't know. I would hate to try to play games on this. You really can see streaks.

I also have a Samsung 900nf that I replaced with the dell 18"... I am kind of picky about monitors etc... But, I was impressed with the 1800... Its the way to go if you gonna game. Yeah, there is a bit of ghosting but it's not bad. I was expecting a lot worse. I watched a DVD on it... And didn't see any ghosting at all. I think when your playing a unreal 2k when you turn you get a bit of ghosting just from the 9700 pro redrawing the screen. But, to say the least, I now use the 19" 900nf as a test monitor. I really liked my tube samsung but... I have to admit that LCD technology has come a long way. I figure by next year or so you won't even be able to buy a tube monitor. Esp now that they are getting down to .15ns refresh times and are coming out with negative charged panels to get PURE BLACK... That's gonna be nice...

Tho, if you?re not a gamer... the 19" planar is the deal here!!! I'd get it for my parents or wife etc... but I believe if you are a gamer then you will be disappointed unless you consider card games the only games you are gonna play!

Good Luck!

Yes. Just to clarify, the $50 off $450 coupon is applied AFTER the 10% off... but it's valid based on the original price BEFORE the 10% off.

sad part about blowing $400 on a monitor is that it's not the end of the costs.

With a new LCD, that means I want to upgrade my GF2Pro to something better with DVI support. That's another $250-$300. But if I'm going to upgrade my Video card, I would want a motherboard that supports AGP 4x. Another $100 down the drain. But wait, if your going to upgrade the mobo, why not upgrade to a newer chip. another $100 down.

$426 + $250 + $100 + $100 = $876.

Very disturbing indeed.

side note. Don't forget fatcash for 3% or $15 back.

Guys, since we all gonna have a new LCD here. What kind of DVI cable should we get? I searched on the eBay, it varies from $1 to $40+... What's the story here?

Robario - I bought it and returned it from Dell SB. When I was setting up the return at Dell I told them about the bad pixels, they never had any problems with the return - I buy alot of stuff from them!

Planar does have a kick arse return policy though, so if you ever do have a problem you can get another monitor very quickly. The size of the PL191 was nice, but I just couldn't live with the ghosting, doing any amount of video editing would drive me up the wall too - I like a clear image!

what's the difference with single and dual link DVI cables? Which one is enough for the LCDs?

i just got a viewsonic vp171b from dell yesterday (ordered monday w/ a 15% off coupon, arrived wednesday... sweet) and let me tell you that it's truly a CRT replacement. colors are perfect and there is absolutely no streaking/ghosting (ok fine there's a little bit if you try really hard and even then you can't see it most of the time).... great contrast, no dead pixels, much easier on the eyes, etc.

I'd prefer the vp171b over the vp181b because the vp181b has a much higherresponse time. I'm not much of a gamer but i do edit and watch videos....

Does anyone know if the Viewsonic VP171B comes with a DVI cable? I bought the monitor last night along with a nice Radeon with DVI and I wanna be able to use it once it gets here. If not, what's up with the cables? Dual-link, huh? Does it matter what type?

both planar and dell came with DVI cables can't say anything for viewsonic as I've never bought any of thier stuff. But I would *ASSUME* it would come with a cable.... I wouldn't worry about buying cables till you get to see if it comes with one or not. You'd think it would come with a normal cable.
