1,000 feet of Cat5e spec cable, 100 rj-45 ends, a crimper, and a ghetto tester labelled half in Chinese. What more could you ask for?

Thanks! This is just what I needed. We're bulding a new house and I've already been drilling holes after the workers leave at night

Any suggestions for buying faceplates and keystones?

My friend and I have used a Cat 5e crossover cable between our Gigabit cards for the past year now, and we've seen roughly 700 mpbs through it. Is going to Cat 6 gonna increase that at all...what's so special about it?

If it does, that spool of Cat 6 just might have to get purchased

I thought I heard something about the Cat6 cable making a difference for the 1000mbps cards. Something about higher frequencies that can be allowed on the line or something.

If I remember correctly 700Mbps is the max unless you bypass the PCI or something.

I think I read that the new mobo's with the built in gigabit ethernet on it's own controller can reach the higher speeds.

Altogether, 700mbps is pretty nice.

HarryK - Check out the Leviton Quickport stuff. They carry it at Home Depot. Good stuff, not really much of a price premium, although a touch. But you can get the 10% coupons for both Lowes and HD pretty easily. I bought a condo recently and wired up the whole place with 5,000' of this same stuff. So far so good. Everything is working great.

Don't forget the 10% coupon for CompGeeks if you are buying a bunch of it. I saved about $35.

Just a FYI:

It's likely this stuff is not braided wire, so it's not good for Patch-cables since it's stiff and will likely create continuity issues if flexed very much.

Great stuff for the walls however.......easy to feed through holes in the studs.

My $.02

How much was the shipping charge? I cringed when I saw the 50+ lbs shipping weight...

I got this last summer and its solid core, so not the best for patch cables but sufficient for me.

for example-- what's the difference between the regular cable and a patch cable?

(the cat6 kit includes 10x 25 foot patch cables)

patch cables are for short runs between pcs and hubs/switches/routers
as mentioned, this compgeeks stuff is likely stiff, so it should work well through running through walls since
a - it should be easier than the flexible patch cable to run through the holes
b - it wont need much moving or bending initially and wont have to be moved at all when youre finished with it

It is dreadfully simple. Put wires from you switch location (patch panel if you want to do it right) to all the location you will put machines. The follow the color codes on the (B) part of the keystones. If you are putting ends on the normal color pattern inside a plug is Orange/White-Orange-Green/White-Blue-Blue/White-Green-Brown/White-Brown.

Have fun drink beer while doing it, its that simple.

I found that Home Depot has Cat5E for 9 cents a foot. Careful though, the 100' preboxed roll is $15. Go figure.

Actually they buy the roll that they cut at a great discount.

for those who ordered, did the cables come oily? my box came like it had grease or something over it.

for those of you who wire your own houses, how nicely do you do it? do you just have a CAT5 cable come out from the floor? or do you have nice wall jacks that have the mating connector to the rj-45 and you plug in your cables (that connect to your PC and hubs) from there.
