gunf1ghter: I wasn't getting nasty, just your use of caps and telling me that what I can and can't do. I've tested it, infront of me, with my own eyes and have seen for myself Can you honestly say you have too? Nothing hostile.

I felt Insane3D was becoming a tad hostile about it... and as to your results, I'm sure that they will be verified by independant testing (anandtech, tomshardware, sharkyextreme) right?

gunf1ghter:

I wasn't really trying to be hostile, you just made a statement about the Palomino's performance like it was a fact having never used one yourself.. I probably shouldn't have responded that way, but it's real hot and humid here and I haven't had my coffee yet..my apologies. Anyway, I would agree that at the same clock speed in most applications, a 1.4ghz Tbird would have pretty similar performance to the Palo @ 1.4ghz, but some things like Seti will really respond to the new core...sort of like how the P4 always does real good @ Q3 benches. I was just pointing out that there were some things that it does perform better than 8% at. I mean when I first got this Athlon 4 setup up and running Seti@Home, I was amazed to finish my first few work units in just over 3hrs flat (3hrs, 8minutes), those are some pretty amazing work unit times! The ALU memory performance really shows how the hardware prefetch really better utilizes DDR.

Indeed, aswell as maxhdw

At the end of the day, we all get different results.

"Both CPU's at a push 'should' be able to hit 1.6GHz. Both my AXIA 1GHz chips hit 1.6GHz on a VIA KT133A chipset. I'm not saying every chip is the same, some have lower thresholds"

While I agree, not all CPU's can handle the same overclock, there are a few of us here on this forum with 1.2ghz MP's and we have all found to get them much over 1.4ghz, you need to really overvolt them. I could only get mine stable @ 1.5ghz if I gave it 2.15v..way to much for me. I would find it extremely hard to believe any of the week 18 Athlon MP's would hit anywhere near 1.6ghz...

That's not true. A 1.2GHz AthlonMP is equivalent to a 1.4GHz Thunderbird. On top of that, if you couple it with DDR you receive even better performance than the 1.4GHz Thunderbird. With mild overclocking, you can achieve far better results. For example, my 1.5GHz AthlonMP outperforms an overclocked Thunderbird at 1.7GHz, and runs much cooler to boot.

If I was choosing, I'd definitely get the AthlonMP. Nonetheless, the 1.4GHz Bird is getting very cheap, and for a budget...

"Sometimes I wonder if the voltage isn't locked like the FSB is locked."

What do you mean? The FSB and Voltage are locked?

mmm...i can run my 1.4 at 1600....so i think it would be tough for the new 1.2mp to do that...if you cant wait for the bigger palo's to come out i think i would get the 1.4

If the 1.2 GHz Palominos were the same price as the 1.4 GHz Thunderbirds, it would really be a no brainer to go with the Palomino. But, unfortunately they aren't. The 1.4 Tbirds are going for around $165 and the 1.2 Palominos are going for over $200.

Am I the only one who finds is amusing that AMD users are debating within themselves about raw frequency vs. cycle for cycle? Pentium4 users must be enjoying this as well.

Go for the 1.4 unless you want smp athlon in the future. MP is just athlon with smp fix.

Ummm..that's just wrong. The Athlon/MP is a new core, with several new features and upgrades.

you couldn't be more wrong. Like insane 3d said, it is the new athlon core.

Under your rig in your profile operating systems states, WinMe.
Unless you are going to run XP or 2000 i'd recommend the 1.4ghz.

Yeah, read up a little bit. AthlonMP is based on the new 'Palomino' core which adds several things over the regular Thunderbird core, less power consumption and heat dissipation topping the list.

hardware prefetch, sse, different die size, more heat disipation due to die size and layout, thermal diode, power now stuff, etc.

"The old T-birds mainly lack hardware prefetch and SSE, right? "

Yes, and the TLB's have three improvements...

1. The L1 Data TLB increases from 32 to 40 entries
2. Both the L2 Instruction TLB and L2 Data TLB use an exclusive architecture
3. TLB entries can be speculatively reloaded
