Why do so many of the new TB + drives spin at less than 7200? Is there a noticeable performance hit? My interest in this particular deal is for use as a storage back up HDD in a eSATA dock.

I don't know where you are getting this 30 day warranty. idea from, unless you are talking about the 30 day Newegg return policy.

The drive has a 3 year manufacturer's warranty. Newegg has a 30 day policy.

because HDD makers realize that people ordering 1 TB+ harddrives generally intend to use them as file storage, instead of program storage.

using them as file storage, they can do with slightly longer seek times which would be the most visible hit going from 7200 rpm to 5400 rpm. the data density of the platter is high enough that transfer rates are kept up despite the drop in RPM.
