I think with this size drive it certainly opens its self up to using some type of mirror or stripe RAID array, especially with the price as it is

Should be a 5 year warranty, yes.

2 or 3 smaller drives? umm, hrm.. *sigh* Should I admit I have 10 500GB spindles in my server? These would really cut down on umm.. well nothing, I'd probably end up having 10 of these at some point either way.

Obviously I can fit too many drives in my server

A quick Newegg search still shows most 500gb drives at the $99 pricepoint. 1500gb for $189 is like getting $10 off two 500gb drives, plus a free 500gb drive...it's a much better value to buy a single drive. Price has everything to do with it

there are 750 gb drives at the $99 price point now...

granted your platter density is a bit worse... but 2 640gb drives @ 85 or so on a deal is equivalent.

the price per gig is pretty competitive on this 1.5 TB honestly, t hough some 1TB drives have gotten down to 130 or so....


when the 1TB drives first came out, they were more than twice the cost of 500gb by a good margin

edplayer, There is no longer a reason to do a long format. There was a time when format was a command that actually poked some bits on the HDD and the HDD itself did a "low level format" and you had to do this before you started using a drive. There is no low level format anymore, what that does is taken care of at the factory.

I don't know of any reason to "long format" a drive.

I have always long formatted new drives for that very reason. The delivery process is usually where the most potential sector damage can occur, especially with the questionable way Newegg ships OEMs sometimes. Last thing you want is trusting your data to a faulty drive.

Not bad. I was going to pick up 3 or 4 750 GB drives because they are actually cheaper than tape. Instead I'll get 2 of these when they are back in stock.
