Looks about right. They cheaped out on the video (Intel Extreme Graphics 2 in i855GB), screen (14.1" 1024x768) and hard drive (4200RPM). It looks like a low cost design applied to the Centrino. It's probably pretty fast (the CPU at least), but not suited for some of the other tasks more expensive Centrinos are like gaming.

I wouldn't buy it because of the video and screen, but it's a good price for a speedy and long battery life laptop.

Don't be so hasty: M2 specs
Click specification and the "M2N" can have anything from a 1.3GHz Centrino to a 1.6GHz Centrino. The z-buy one is 1.6GHz version, but the cheaper eCost version doesn't have any details. It could be a Centrino 1.3GHz.

Yeah.... the ecost one scares me... could just be bare-bones. But the M2N @ z-buys should be ok for, say, an 18-year-old computer illiterate college girl who plays minesweeper and wants to spend as little money as possible on a good notebook?

That eCost link is appointed exactly the same as the laptop reviewed @ Tom's Hardware.

I was looking into buying one last week before I picked up a Vaio...

The notable difference is 256mb instead of 512, but that's only an extra $40 from Newegg.

Cheap because of the video card, etc...

It's a fast CPU on a body from last year... 14.1", 256/512mb, onboard video, etc... It's no screamer, but it's a Centrino nonetheless.

Found the TH review here: http://www6.tomshardware.com/mobile/20030711/index.html But I cant find where it says that this is the same lappy/specs eCost is selling. Still looking for a centrino notebook for school...so many choices....

How do you know? Did you call them and ask the speed of the CPU? As I pointed out above, that model comes with anything from a 1.3GHz to a 1.6GHz CPU, as stated on asus's spec page. I still think the ecost model has a slower CPU.

I have always called z-buy when I needed an answer and they have always been good to me. E-Cost will cancel your order and not tell you. E-mail E-Cost? I will never order from them again as my tries to contact them took weeks!!!!!

Asus lappies are notorious for overheating, be warned... not to mention their fan is on like ALL the time and quiet noisy...

the ecost one is the barebones.

no hd, no cpu, no ram.

at $960 this is a good deal. extreme graphics 2 is on the mx420 class of performance. it isnt THAT slow, and well how many of you are really going to game on a laptop

hans007,

That's simply not true... I called them about this because it was so damned cheap. It's the prebuilt combo that was reviewed on Tom's Hardware - I got that from two different employees.

The only difference from the main deal is the 256mb instead of the 512mb.

Let me add that I don't trust eCost after what they've done to me in the past, so I will skip this.

its just that there was a deal about this a few months ago (well it was more money) and the ecost vague ad was there, and it was a bare one that time.

No one is gonna sell a 1.6 centrino with a 40gb hd, and a dvd/cdrw for 760. Ecost looks very sketchy. the $960 deal looks okay, though. I don't know anything about asus chasis, though.

Edit: the deal looks dead. tooling around on their site, the cheapest machine with about the same specs is $1599. Maybe it was a price mistake?
