<< FYI: on the sis645 chipset (not dx) you can use all three ddr slots if you are using pc2100 however if you want to use pc2700 (ddr333) you can only use 2 slots. >>

Fant:
Did you personally try it, read about it, or is that hear-say? Since I have to populate all 3 slots, I really need to know just how factual that is! What's the story about 3 x PC2700 on the DX?

I bought the 1.6a and P4s333 from Newegg and Samsung PC2700 DDR from googlegear last week. The combo OC to 2.4g without any tweaking. Standard voltage and stock cooling fan. I am running Prime95 @ 2.133Ghz for now to make sure everything is OK before burning it in @2.4g.

BTW: my 1.6a is from Costa Rica.

About number # of PC2700 sticks you can install on this board. According to ASUS, at their website as well as in the manual, two is the max.

Thanks for the feedback bargainshopper. In that case, I'll wait for the P4S533; certainly the DX version should support 3 x PC2700! :Q

<< The P4S533 with 645DX chipset will only supports 2 sticks of PC2700 DDR RAM according tohttp://usa.asus.com/mb/socket478/p4s533/specification.htm. As far as I can tell, 533 FSB and ATA133 are the additional features ove the 645. >>

Bummer :disgust: ... I wonder if that's peculiar to the Asus boards, and if any others (e.g., Gigabyte GA-8STX or MSI 645E Max2-LRU) will work with 6 banks of PC2700?

What indicates only 2 sticks??

Memory
3 x DDR DIMM Sockets
Max. 3GB unbuffered PC2700 / PC2100 /PC1600 DDR DRAM
(PC 2700 Max. to 4 banks only)

Given this limitation, if you over clock PC2100 to PC2700, does it limit to 2 as well?

Well, since each memory module has 2 banks, two sticks will make it 4.

Follow-up: This restriction appears to exist in every SiS645/645DX board-spec that I've seen so far ...must be a timing issue!

<< ...the P4S333 also supports the 533 FSB and i dunno if any boards support ata133. >>

533 FSB? Well perhaps, but not 'naturally' - i.e., not per spec!

Frankly, I don't think ATA/133 is worth much (if anything). On the other hand, USB 2.0 and/or IEEE1394 ports would be very useful, but unfortunately neither the Asus 645 or 645DX boards provide either one! However, I'm sure that the new 645DX Gigabyte and MSI boards will offer one and/or the other.

"The P4S333 Series with the SiS 645 chipset supports the most advanced socket 478 processors up to 2.4GHz and beyond, including Willamette and future Northwood (0.13u) processors. In addition to supporting high-bandwidth DDR 333, unique MuTIOL® technology increases the bus speed between the north bridge and south bridge to 533MB/sec, for enhanced system performance."

thats right. it does support 533 fsb

All I'm saying (without interpretations on my part) is that Asus' spec page says:

Chipset
SiS 645 North Bridge and SiS 961 South Bridge
ITE 8707F LPC Super I/O Chip

FSB
400 MHz

Memory
3 x DDR DIMM Sockets,
Max. 3GB unbuffered PC2700/PC2100/PC1600 ECC/non-ECC DDR SDRAM Memory
(PC 2700 Max. to 4 banks only)

I'm so happy you said that it was 4banks of memory max. I was going to get 2X256megs but I think I'll go for 1X512 for a better upgradability. From a personal point, I found that being able to upgrade without having to sell your old RAM is worth the premium.
I'm so anxious to receive my first pay check (yes I'm a student) and get that 1.6a at over 2 gigs =)

You're welcome. IMHO, going for 512MB sticks of PC2700 makes a lot of sense, especially with the SiS boards. Not to mention that 512MB Samsung PC2700 sticks can be had for about $130 - a much better deal than 512MB Crucial PC2100 sticks!
