1.6A or 1.8A or 2.0A??

I will most be likely be getting this mb:

GIGABYTE GA-8IRXP

I will be using the following other system components:

OCZ PC3000 ( Ive tested this ram stable to 190 fsb)
Asus 8200 Deluxe
Maxtor hd

I have read about the monster overclocks of the 1.6's but I was wondering is the 2.0 worth it? Is it possible to push 3.0 with these. I mean it seems like they should do around 2.8+. What do you all think.

If you want bang for buck then it has to be the 1.6A which has to be the new celeron of overclocking.

In addition do not bother with the 81RXP if you do not need raid or usb2 and feel happy doing the wire mod, (search the forum under username benjamat for details) The 81RX is much cheaper and my 1.6A overclocks pretty stable to 2.4Ghz though I run it at 2.2 for absolute rock stability.

The higher rated chips 1.8, 2.0 etc seem to give progressively less reward for your overclocking exploits.

keep in mind that my system uses standard fan cooling supplied with the chip and uses crucial 2100 set at 5.2.2.2

i'd say get the 1.6a and o/c fsb to 133mhz to get 2.1ghz while keeping everything else within spec. My old 1.8a would only do 2.2ghz, but it meant running my pci/agp bus out of spec.

Yes, the 8IRX is almost identical to the 8IRXP but cheaper. However, besides missing the onboard RAID/NIC/USB2.0, it is also missing vcore adjustments in BIOS.

Ok here are the two mb's I'm looking at right now:

1.)MSI 845 ARU
2.)P4 Titan DDR (GA-8IRXP)

Which one in your minds is better. Has anyone used either of these? What do their fsb usually max out at? Anandtech rated the msi board 2nd and the gigabit one 1st. Any ideas here? both run about the same. And the price of the 2.0A dropped 12 bucks today.

I will probably be getting the MSI one now after my reading on the gb one. I found a lot of bad unfixed problems people have been having with it and the msi one seems to be treating everyone well.

Now the real question. How high do you think a 2.0A will go on regular air cooling.

The 1.8A is only a little more than the 1.6A, but still a good deal less the 2.0A. Plus I'm biased as mine is running at 2.4 right now. Once I get around to ordering an Alpha I'll see if it wants to go higher.

I'd say wait for intel to cut the prices and then probably go with the 1.8A or the 2.0A. With the right board you should be able to oc better.

I'm using the MSI 845 Ultra-ARU and a 1.8A Northwood. The fsb of the board goes in 1 MHz incremints up to 200 MHz. It also has dividers at 133 and 166 MHz. My 1.8A is running at 2.46 on 1.70 volts. I'm using a Thermaltake P4 Volcano 478 hs/fan. My idle temperatures are in the mid to upper 40's, and under full load the temp jumps up to around 59-62 degrees Celsius. (I'm using BIOS version 3.2 which may be reporting higher than actual temperatures. The 3.0 BIOS, the one that comes with the board, displays the temperatures vastly under their real temps.) I think the board is a very good board and would be a nice choice. If you don't want the USB2.0 or RAID options, you can get the Ultra-A. In the future, I'll probably upgrade my Power Supply since that is probably what's causing some minor instabilities above a fsb of 137 MHz.

lol, DreDay, obviously you weren't around for the clock throttling "scandal" back when the willamettes first came out, and you haven't heard of or seen dr tom's "remove heatsink while at full load" tests. EVERY pentium IV will throttle back if they get too hot. Ozmodiar, just get the 1.6a. mine is fine at 2.48, but my ram holds me back from any higher. at 2.48 it puts out more heat than i like with the stock cooling (and in fact seems to throttle down in certain parts of the nature test in 3dmark2001, as my FPS takes big momentary dives where there are the most polys on the screen), but once my sunflower comes in on tuesday all bets are off 1.6a=teh r0x0r.

My stick of ram I have here, I have personally tested it stable using a fsb of 192. I was thinking of getting the 2.0 and possibly water cooling it and seeing if I can break 3.0. I was thinking of what a godly setup it would be if I used a pelt. If I could reach an fsb of 192 the p4 that would be sweet: 1.6A@192fsb = 3072 or the 2.0A@192fsb = 3840. Lol I doubt I could get the 2.0 to do that but I am sure if you used watercooling combined with a pelt, something like a 156watt or higher it could do it. I saw a 226watt pelt setup. That would be cool.

I just had a mb die on me so I am trying to decide if I want to stick it out with amd and build an amd h20 powerhouse or a p4 h20 powerhouse. All I need to purchase is the proc and the mb's and then the cooling crap.

What scandal? Intel likes to keep there processors from burning up so they have the throttle back feature which works only at HIGH core temps. Hey its better then Athlon/XP burning up at 700F ahha

ugh, yet another one

. vans hardware (i believe it was that rat bastard van) claimed that the pentium IV throttled down even when the processor wasn't overheating. the claim being that pentium IV's weren't performing like they should, and thus intel was ripping people off. there was a big furor, but it turned out to be a lie. obviously i don't consider the clock throttling to be a liability, or i wouldn't have the system that is posted in my sig.

well im not going to convert to intel. The xp board i had that i thought was dead, wasnt, i got it working somehow. So, i will just stick with what i have. Thanks for the input guys and gals.

BTW, it was my iwill xp333-r 2.1 that stopped working, wasnt putting out a vid signal. To fix it it took everything out cept the vid, ram, cpu+fan and ps. I took the mb battery off and let it sit. Then i reset the cmos a couple of times just to make it good and cleared. Then i booted up just fine.

I think I might get a xp2100+ with the money i was going to spend on the new setup.
