I just have an Antec 300 watt, I was very suprised when I upgraded to the P4 and overclocked it that I didn't need to buy a new PS. I was just about to buy an Antec 400 watt, but haven't had a power problem yet, so I am just going to keep this one.

I found out recently that my PS was only giving me 1.57 V on average @ 1.60V . 2.25 GHz is rock stable btw. Sometimes when I set it to 1.7 V in bios it keeps it at 1.60 V for some reason ... not sure why. At this voltage 2.4 Ghz will not POST even. After making sure it ran @ 1.70 it did boot and run fine @ 2.4 GHz, however I'm not that comfortable with this voltage right now. I just got a new Enermax 350W PS with the proper P4 connector (instead of the EZ-plug). I'm gonna test out the new PS and see if I can get it to run stable @ 2.4 GHz w/ 1.65V.

OK here are my results with the new 350 Watt Enermax PS. Also important to note is if people use the special 4-pin square P4 connector or the "EZ-plug" connector which uses a regular HD connector for more power. I even started a thread on this topic to get out its importance.

Anyway:

1) P4 1.8A @ 2.358GHz (malay)
2) FSB=131 MHz
3) Vcore= 1.675V bios ... runs 1.60-1.71V
4) P4B266 (i845D)
5) Crucial PC2100 (ECC I think) @ 133 MHz

Hen Howc, Are you using ez plug or p4 12v connector??? Do you have anything else on that connector, ie fans??? That 12v is downright scary looking for idle...Does the asus i845d mobo have an issue reading voltages??

HenHowc I have almost the exact same setup as you. BUT I have a sunflower cooler and antec 300W ps.
Could my using a non p4 ps be the problem with not getting anywhere? I am using one of the plugs on the
board, not the 4 pin sq connector. I can only go 109 fsb. Anything higher and it takes windows a minute to
open a window. I tried turbo 1 and turbo 2 and nothing different at all. Upped the core voltage all the way to
1.7 nothing.

Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong?
Using motherboard monitor 5 and case temp is 22 cpu temp is 28 IDLE
goes to 25 38 with prime 95 after about 45 minutes and that is max.

I tried 133 thinking it might divide the PCI bus and get it to work, it post but black screen going to windows ( I kinda expected that )
lol

anyone have any ideas as to what I need to do?

Thank you big time for help

( I know this is list specs, so I did, but I had to ask those who have done it what I might be doing wrong )

hey etrin...the psu matters but not enough to allow your chip to jump from 109fsb to 133fsb

here's my experience with the northwoods so far...i've tried three chips:

1) 1.6A Costa Rica chip...would do 133FSB default voltage, could boot above that up to 145FSB but would have reboots, crashes, prime95 errors...would not post 150FSB. Tried a generic psu versus my enermax 451 431W PSU...noticed that with the generic psu i would have to upp the voltage a bit to overclock stable...whereas the enermax could do 2133MHZ at 1.5V

2) 1.8A Malay Chip...would only get up to 124FSB...anything above that would not post...tried different PSUs...no go, RMAed

3) 1.8A Costa Rica, ...been running at FSB133 2400Mhz every since i installed it, 1.625V, been stable as heck...was running winamp, 3dmark2k1, prime95, mbm5, and sandra overnight no reboots no lockups, only other FSB i've tried is 150...but none of the CPUs have been able to break that barrier

noticed that the cpu goes from 30C idle to ~47C full load which is a big jump...at 1800Mhz stock it goes 30C to about 45C

Moral of the story? You need to be lucky and get a good chip...none of your components will matter too much if your chip is not an overclocker. better cooling, overclockable memory, strong psus are all nice but i think they will help you obtain stability not a higher overclock (this is solely my opinion based on three chips)

HenHowC thanks very much for the info.
By the way how did you determine the manufacturing site of your processor?
Any link to the site that gives this info would be appreciated. I looked on the box
but its just numbers as usual.

I will try and find another cpu and try. This one might just be junk.

Man, I must have bad luck. First off, I can't even run my system stable at 2.4 Ghz even at 1.75 volts. I backed off to 2.3 GHz to run completely stable. I tried 2.5 GHz at 1.8 volts, but it died within minutes. Then, I figured I would get a better HSF and see if that helps at all. So, I picked up a TT Dragon 478 with a High/Medium/Low fan setting. It is a terrible piece of sh*t. I got 50 C under load with the Intel HSF and it got up to 55 C before MBM started beeping and it shut it down. It looks like a great HSF, but I looked at the bottom and I can see that only the four corners are touching the HSF and not the middle, so it obviously isn't flat at all. Anyways, I talked to heatsinkfactory.com and they will take it back and give me my money back. I might look at a Alpha HSF in a few weeks if I feel lucky enough.

4) sis645
5) Samsung PC2700 DDR333, 4:5 = 166mhzx2=333mhz
6) cpu: 40c(idle) - 56c(load) system: 31c(idle) - 32c (load)

This is with the ps fan and 3 case fans inside moving the air...running prime95 so far with this setup 5hrs and counting...
Update: prime95 failed after about 6 hours...upped the voltage another notch to bios setting of 1.65v (asusprobe reports 1.712-1.776...max temp still is 56c on cpu...however +12V drops to 11.328...still pretty good for a crappy ass 250watt atx supply..
