1.8ghz Duron + ECS K7VTA3 motherboard combo $39.99 at Fry's

If you're talking about the one on Arques Ave., yep, it's $39.99. I totally had to jump on this. For some reason they didn't have the advertisement up in the CPU area like they normally do, but you just have to ask a sales rep for it. They seemed to have at least about a dozen motherboards left, but I don't know about the CPUs. By the way, this is a BARE CPU ... no fan.

SD Fry's has the 1.6 combo for $35. Tempting if I can get it to 2.0.

really? sh!t.. tempted to go drive down there and get one...

1st you need pc2700 ram

then set the jumpers

from 1-2 | 2-3 = 12 x 133mhz = 1.6ghz
to 2-3 | 2-3 = 12 x 166mhz fsb = 2.0ghz

you could do the same w/ the 1.8 duron, but you'd likely need to do some tweaking
since the mult/fsb on the 1.8 is 13.5 x 133 = 1800mhz
going to 13.5 x 166 = 2250mhz isn't too likely (although it has been done)

Thanks for the info. I might just give it a try and build a computer for the gf's parents.
They currently have my old tbird 1.33.
Limit 1 in ad, but I'll try to pick up more. I already have 2 extra SiS mobos from ECS. I wonder if those would work to oc as well since I prefer SiS to VIA.

forget the 1.6, the 1.8's still mod to an XP2200+ with a little pencil over the cut L2 (i think) bridge. i did it when i purchased the 1.8 combo last month for $50 =/

and yes, an XP2200+ is faster than a duron at 2ghz.

yup, durons are still being made. As of right now there are duron 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8.
This Fry's deal is especially hot since someone said that the 1.6ghz can hit 2ghz just by switching the FSB to 166.
2ghz and a mobo for $35 plus tax is a good deal.

sell the ECS online for $20 shipped and you have a cpu for only about $20. I wouldn't waste my time with another ECS, seen way too many become flaky after only a few months.
