Having a nasty cold, yesterday after I got off of work I decided to go in to my local Walmart (in Houston) to buy a bottle of Tylenol, have the reciept, cost $7.96. So after I get home 15 minutes later I get a call from Visa. They said that they thought that a fraudulent charge might of been made on my debit card. So I get online and check. Seems like someone in Plano, TX charged $250.00 to my debit card here in Houston 5 minutes after I left the store. Wow, within 5 minutes they either hacked in or the little turd behind the counter called his buddy in Plano and made the transaction.

To make a long story short, Walmart could give a crap, filed police report, my credit union bank will be refunding me eventually and gave me a new card. Moral of the story, get your Tylenol somewhere else. And Merry Christmas to one and all! :\

I don't see how it could be connected. Assuming you ran your card through the countertop card reader, there was no record of your number nor could the cashier have seen it.

He could have a card skimmer attached the the swiper and snag the card # right when he puts transactions through.

and you really think someone is sitting at a computer waiting for numbers to come in just to use it? you have any idea the number of CC's walmart swipes in day?

really common sense should tell you that the odds on there being a connection are slim to none.

odds are someone got ahold of the number and just happened to use it at the same time he did.

At least Visa notified you, and very quickly.

yeap. that is good.

Had Visa call me about 2 years ago. seems sombody tried to buy like 2k worth of computer parts at a small computer shop in florida At the same time that happened i was buying gas in Chicago area. they called and the guy was cool. he asked if my car went a thousand miles an hour hehe.

Yes, odds are that someone else got the number and the timing was a coincidence. I'm just pointing out that it is possible that it was the WalMart guy who stole it.

Also, it's possible that the transactions were just batched out by the bank together, but the original transactions where put through more than 5 minutes apart.

Regular ATM debit card or credit card are fine. Just don't use a Visa/MC debit card.

Is there a criteria that has to be met for Visa to flag something as suspect and give you a courtesy call? I mean I've made over $2000 worth of charges the 2 weeks after Black Fri across multiple online sites and B&M stores but not once did I get a call from my card company asking me if everything a ok.

yeap nearly all of them do now. My visa branded debit card gives me the same protection as my Visa CC.

The bad part about a debit card is that often times they will freeze the account while they investigate. If that card is tied to your checking account, you can't write checks. Normally that's not a problem, but this happened to my friend and he couldn't write the check for rent.

Yes I am protected as long as I file a police report. Yeah I'm sure it was just coincidence that 5 minutes after I used my card the was money taken out and I hadn't used my card in a month. Yeah right, just pure coincidence.

The red flag happens when I'm in Houston make a buy, and immediately there is a transaction in Plano Tx. They have software that looks for that kind of stuff at Visa.

Weird, I have a chase VISA/Debit and, whenever there's a weird charge they refunded me immediately, and investigate on my behalf. No police report necessary

so OP, how did het get your card number? If you scanned your card at the counter, how did he steal the number? The register doesn't capture it, the receipt doesn't show it.

The police report is a requirement of my credit union to refund immediately. The sense that I got is that I had to prove that I was not the crook first, then they go after whomever it is, after that's been established. Anyway got a new card and money will refunded shortly. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. Do with it what you wil.
For a while I wondered if it was those Russians that got Citibank. But I guess not.

I have no idea how they got it. I swipe immediately covering myself so they don't get my pin and put it in my wallet immediately. Once I get my receipt I thought the software would shut down the connection immediately. Must be something new they are using.

At least this thread isn't titled, "someone stole my credit card and racked up $250 worth of charges on my credit card and my credit union won't help me"

at walmart? not very likely. every register has a camera on it and the card readers are out in the open where im sure somebody would have seen somebody screwing on a device to the card reader.

That's nice they called you- I've had my card shut down a couple times because they thought there was fraudulent activity (there wasnt, just had spent a lot)- and they never called me- I had to call in after my card was declined.
