All connected on Netgear hub.

All 3 running WinME. All with network adapters bound to TCP and Netbeui.

Computer 1 can see computers 2 and 3 and can transfer files to/from easily.

Computer 2 cannot see anything. Plugged into port 2 on hub.

Computer 3 cannot see anything. Plugged into port 3 on hub.

I tried loading IPX w/without NetBIOS. Nothing. Drives on each computer are shared w/ full access.

What the heck is going on?

More info:

Computers can game with each other just fine. Computers can ping each other fine.

I have never experienced anything so frustrating in my life.

Tried switching the order of cables connected to ports on the hub. Nothing.

The two computers with problems recognize that each other are trying to connect to it: before shutting down it tells me the other computer is trying to connect to it. This despite the fact that any attempt to go from one computer to the other results in Network Neighborhood (Stopped Responding).

all machines are winME right? No firewall software on the boxes right?

turn all the boxes off. Power one of the boxes up and login to windows. Let it sit ther for 10 minutes or so. Power the other one on and login, let it sit there for 10 minutes or so. finally, power the other one on and cross your fingers.

Also basic question but is file and print sharing enabled on all of them? Do you have different ip addresses for all of them?

Hey, if you can ping each machine.. setup a simple lmhosts file:

Using Notepad or another text editor, create a file with the following entries:

192.168.0.1 machine1
192.168.0.2 machine2

Name the file LMHOSTS and save it in your Windows directory
(not an ME user so correct me if I'm wrong.. works in 95/98)

I figured out the following.

Machines 1 and 2 have the same subnet mask. Machine 3 is put on an entirely different subnet by my ISP. (all 3 are going through hub to cable modem....each has its own IP). I can't force it since it's using DHCP.

Also, and I suppose this is more of a new problem.....but Nero on machines 2 and 3 NO LONGER WORKS after I fiddled with the network settings yesterday. I don't accept it is is a mere coincidence. They both freeze when the burning is to begin.

I'm going to put Win2k on the machines today and see if that is any better than this buggy ME.

BTW, yes all machines are set to workgroup MSHOME. I've now installed/uninstalled/reinstalled all the network protocols on each machine....nothing.

It is unbelievable that in 2001 it is still this tricky to get a simple home LAN set up.

trust me, I've done this a dozen times.

Also.....machines 2 and 3 hang and WILL NOT shutdown on their own properly. I have to hit the reset switch.

Try booting up your newest OS system first. Then the other in order of newest OS. After each one boots, wait a little bit (5 min or so). But first try to get two to talk to one another. Don't try and do all three at the same time cuz too many variables.

Also what NICs are you using? Make sure you have updated drivers for these.
