you do own this one. you're listed as all the contacts if you choose your own dns. if you have them do your dns, you list them as tech contact. of course you can take them out ..

dude, this is a pretty sweet deal. Thanks, haner. I was planning to register a domain name anyways, but now, I only have to pay a buck! A question tho, if I want to renew my domain, how much do I have to pay for the second year? Not $70, is it?

[edit]Oh, and I might add that the offer expires 9/30. [/edit]

First year is $1. The next two years (second and third) is $70 for both years. If you're only going to keep it one year, then this is a hot deal. If you plan on keeping it longer, you're better off going with dotster or domainmonger which will charge you a lower annual fee.

Yes, you can. It takes a little work... You have to print out a lengthly form, fill it out, sign it, and fax it to your new registrar.

Then it sounds good to me!

And to think, just a few weeks ago, I paid $8 per domain when I went and registered two...I could have registered 16 for that much money!

Then again, $8's not bad either...

IronTek: It looks like register.com charges a fee for transferring a domain to a new registrar... Read their registration agreement at: http://staples.register.com/service-agreement.cgi.

<< 3. Transfer of Registrant

Register.com will consider the entity named as the administrative contact for the domain name at the time the controlling user name and password are secured as the registrant of that domain name. You agree that prior to the effectiveness of any transfer of registrant of your domain name to another entity, you will pay register.com the then-current amount set forth by register.com for the transfer of registrant of a domain name. You further agree that as a condition of any such transfer of registrant of your domain name, the entity to which you seek to transfer your domain name (the "Transferee&quot shall agree in writing to be bound by all terms and conditions of this Agreement. Your domain name will not be transferred until we receive such written assurances, and actual payment of the transfer fee, or reasonable assurance of payment of the transfer fee from a third party (such reasonable assurance as determined by register.com in its sole discretion). You acknowledge and agree that if you attempt to transfer your domain name registration without paying register.com the then-current amount set by register.com for the transfer of registrant of a domain name, or if the entity to which you seek to transfer your domain name fails to agree in writing to be bound by all terms and conditions of this Agreement, any such transfer will be null and void, and will result in your domain name registration being revoked without a refund of any charges you have incurred in attempting to register or transfer that domain name.

This doesn't sound like a very good deal to me... I'll stick with domainmonger.com.

<edit>
Stupid me... This is transfer of registrant, not of registrar! Nevermind.

No form crap is necessary. That was only with NSI. Go to someplace like www.domainnamesystems.com after the year is up. Just gotta do some stuff online, very painless, as long as you have access to the email address that the domain was originally registered under. Pay them the $15 to transfer the domain to them and get an extra year tacked onto the end of it. Seems like the way to go with this.

So, I if I register a domain name do I need a server to put up a webpage on that domain name? Where do I get a server from and how much does it cost?
If I have a webpage at my school, can I transfer it to my domain name?

Thanks in advance.

J-Dub,

They charge to change the registrant, the person or entity that owns the domain name. They do not charge for you to transfer to another registrar, the company that registers your domain name.

This seems to be pretty common practice these days. Most registrars require that ownership transfers be in writing, thus a real live person looks at the request, and they are charging for that persons time. At a highly inflated rate of course.

i used www.NameZero.com for my domain registration. It's free, the only catch is they put a Banner Frame Advertisement on the bottom of your webpage. But that can be easily removed by implenting a No Frames Script. And I host all my files on a free webhost like www.F2s.com, which gives 20 megs of FTP space, no Ads, and provides CGI and Perl script bins. I'm pretty sure I own that domain name and I reserve the right to sell it if I want. The $1 to register is pretty good deal if there's no advertising but the $70 fee for the 2nd year is really expensive. For those of you that want to spend money and not get an advertisement banner like namezero.com should goto www.000domains.com. It's $13.50/year and you own your domain. Hoped that helped.

P.S. This is my very first post even though I'm a regular anandtech forum reader

Check register.com's price for transfering a domain name to another registrar. Yes, they CANcharge you for transfering a domain name, so at then end of a year (you'll probably want to transfer at 11 months, just to be on the safe side), you'll have to pay register.com to transfer your domain name -- and, of course, you'll also have to pay your new registrar's annual fees.

So, if you plan on keeping the domain name, you're not really going to save anything.

But this would be very good to get a bunch of domain names for your site, and then see which addresses get the most hits...

Then just keep the ones that get the most, and you're not out that much cash..

Call me bozo or whatever, but where is the place that you put in the homepage of where your site is. All I know is the dns server are dns27.register.com and dns28.register.com. So how or where do I forward my site to my homepage? Anybody?

anazoal,

Register.com does charge you when you transfer a domain from another registrar to them. According to the email I got from them they do not charge you when a domain is transfered from them to a different, registrar however.

ICANN doesn't allow them to charge when a domain name is transfered away from a registrar or an initial registration of course.

The new registrar WILL charge you something however, because they have to pay NSI their cut every time a 'new' registration is made. Yes a transfer is considered a 'new' registration by ICANN and NSI. So NSI loves people that transfer domains around because they get their cut more frequently the once per year.

Cold deal! After the first year, it's $70 per 2 years. If you want to transfer, you have to pay them a fee. The fee is $35 right now, but they can increase it at any time and you have to pay the fee (whatever the new fee is) at the time you want to transfer.

Folks, read the fine print. The cost of this deal is $1 for the first year, and $35 per year or less thereafter. So you get 3 years for $71 or if you stay with Register.com. Or you can switch to another registrar, pay their current yearly fee, and save a lot of money.
